View Full Version : Was Sue Ann Nivens An Unlikeable Character? Brian Damage 06-19-2011, 11:59 PM Or did they soften her up enough to be liked or even tolerable? http://orvillelloyddouglas.files.wordpress.com/2010/03/sue-ann-nivens.gif catlover79 06-20-2011, 12:07 AM Let's face it - Sue Ann had very few (if any) redeeming qualities. She was Martha Stewart before Martha Stewart was Martha Stewart!!!   Honestly, the resemblance and the sense of condescension is eerie!!! Brian Damage 06-20-2011, 12:29 AM Let's face it - Sue Ann had very few (if any) redeeming qualities. She was Martha Stewart before Martha Stewart was Martha Stewart!!!   Honestly, the resemblance and the sense of condescension is eerie!!! Aw c'mon Monika, Martha Stewart is so loveable! ;) catlover79 06-20-2011, 01:23 AM Oh, yeah. Brian Damage 06-20-2011, 08:37 AM  catlover79 06-20-2011, 02:15 PM Don't get this woman mad at you!!!   Kristen 06-20-2011, 03:32 PM Sue Ann was def. somebody you wouldn't want to know in real life, but as a character, she worked. And Betty of course was brilliant in the part! It's so hard to believe she went on to play Rose on GG, who couldn't be more opposite! And now she's Elka on HiC. Sorry to get slightly off-topic there, LOL. But I always thought it was great for them to have somebody who wasn't always nice and sweet to play off of! scotsguy 06-20-2011, 05:18 PM Yes Betty's comedy genius made Sue-Ann work. Sue-Ann saw any other woman as a rival and could be quite cutting to Mary making snide comments, about Mary's age(although Sue Ann was older!) and Mary's "quiet" love life. It was funny hearing Mary making comments back about her and of course,Murray could shoot her down like he did with Ted. You always felt Sue-Ann was clearly a lonely woman too. OH Nuts! 06-20-2011, 06:22 PM Sue Ann was def. somebody you wouldn't want to know in real life, but as a character, she worked. And Betty of course was brilliant in the part! Yes, I totally agree with you - the show needed noxious characters like Sue Ann and Ted to play off Mary's wholesomeness and niceness. McGillicuddy 06-20-2011, 07:10 PM Yes, I totally agree with you - the show needed noxious characters like Sue Ann and Ted to play off Mary's wholesomeness and niceness. She also was some-what of a replacement for the other obnoxious character, Phyllis! catlover79 06-20-2011, 08:54 PM She also was some-what of a replacement for the other obnoxious character, Phyllis! Two women you definitely don't want to be stuck in an elevator with!!   McGillicuddy 06-20-2011, 10:28 PM Two women you definitely don't want to be stuck in an elevator with!!   Especially if Chocolate Souflette is involved! catlover79 06-21-2011, 02:10 PM Especially if Chocolate Souflette is involved! Yes, that could get VERY messy!!!   OH Nuts! 06-21-2011, 04:14 PM Two women you definitely don't want to be stuck in an elevator with!!   Amen to that! (The thought of being stuck in an elevator with the two of them is definitely......SCARY!) catlover79 06-21-2011, 09:05 PM Amen to that! (The thought of being stuck in an elevator with the two of them is definitely......SCARY!) That's the stuff nightmares are made of - scarier than anything Stephen King could concoct.   Retro4Life 06-21-2011, 09:07 PM I'll use a quote I've used about other "villainous" characters to describe Sue Ann Nivens. She was a great character but a terrible human being. catlover79 06-21-2011, 09:43 PM Yes, she was - and you can just tell how much fun Betty had playing her. If not for Betty, Sue Ann would've been the most hated character in TV history!!! Retro4Life 06-21-2011, 09:50 PM Yes, she was - and you can just tell how much fun Betty had playing her. If not for Betty, Sue Ann would've been the most hated character in TV history!!! I think sometimes there's a joy in playing your exact opposite, and maybe that was the case with Betty playing Sue Ann. Obviously the two are nothing alike! catlover79 06-21-2011, 09:53 PM Yup!!! Betty just bit into the role like you would take a bite out of a nice, big juicy apple. You could tell by the twinkle in her eye - one of the reasons why she has such multi-generational appeal!! :D gopyle 11-13-2011, 07:27 PM The character could be very funny, but was way overused in the last few seasons. She would have been better as a twice a season character. McGillicuddy 11-13-2011, 09:42 PM The character could be very funny, but was way overused in the last few seasons. She would have been better as a twice a season character. No way!! If they didn't have Sue Ann to "fill the void" after Rhoda and Phyllis left, I think TMTMS would have ended after season 5! Kristen 11-14-2011, 01:56 AM Yes, she was - and you can just tell how much fun Betty had playing her. If not for Betty, Sue Ann would've been the most hated character in TV history!!! You said it, Monika! I think Betty had a lot of fun playing someone as evil as Sue Ann was. And knowing how close Betty and Mary are/were in real life, it had to be fun to get to call Mary all kinds of names and get paid for it! Dianne3 11-14-2011, 05:04 PM I skip the Sue-Ann centered episodes. Sue-Ann didn't really "fill the void" of Rhoda & Phyllis. Some examples include the Season 6 episode where Mary calls Rhoda when she is in love since she had no close girlfriends on the show to share this with and the Season 7 episode where it is Lou that helps with her addiction to sleeping pills. McGillicuddy 11-14-2011, 08:04 PM I skip the Sue-Ann centered episodes. Sue-Ann didn't really "fill the void" of Rhoda & Phyllis. I just meant there was room to expand her character after Rhoda and Phyllis were gone. Georgette's role got expanded also. I just don't think the show could have continued with just Mary, Lou, Murray and Ted as the only regulars. Dianne3 11-15-2011, 02:29 PM I do agree the show need more female characters after Rhoda & Phyllis departed. Sue-Ann and Georgette evened up the numbers. |
