...an "unaired version", 'studd'. The "final" version of the pilot appeared on ABC as episode #1 on September 25, 1970. The "unaired version" was just that- it was shown to ABC executives around February 1970 before they decided to buy the series for their fall schedule that March. After they did, Screen Gems slightly reworked and re-edited the pilot to fit a 30 minute time period (with commercials).

Hey if i am not mistaken although my mind could be playing tricks on me, i remember along time ago which could have been shown in the un aired pilot before the late johnny cash introduce the family for the very first time i think i remembered seeing the family performing in like a high school auditorium with the blue curtin background and it looked like an older kid was playing the drums and danny was playing a les paul like gibson based reddish brown guitar with a white color in the middle of it again i could be wrong as a matter of fact if you go to amazon.com and type in partridge family vhs you will see the cover with the family holding there instrument and danny is sitting on his amp holding that bass guiter

It was filmed in 1969, The show was originally due to premiere on December 21st, 1969 but was scrapped and premiered on September 25th, 1970. The unaired pilot didn't have much difference from the aired one. The only differences were:
1.Shirley's name was Connie not Shirley
2. Laurie had more dialogue in the garage scene establishing her as more "Millicent"
3. Laurie assured her mother that she did have a sweet voice and reminded her that she used to sing Christmas carols with their father until he got to drunk
4. The Partridge's lived in Ohio not California
5. At the tag scene it shows Shirley coming home with a date (Her then husband Jack Cassidy) and Danny's voice starts changing

December 21 would be a strange time for any new show to appear, since it's not yet what was called the "second season" (ABC started that term back in January 1966, when it premiered Batman and a couple other shows to replace its fall shows which had already bombed.), and it's just before Christmas, when tv viewing is generally low compared to other times of the year other than summer. It was probably good for ABC to hold the show back for a normal fall premiere in 1970.

I've seen Shirley referred to as "Connie" in the first edition of Brooks & Marsh's tv encyclopedia. Director Ralph Senensky, in his blog, also shared notes from a S1 Partridge Family episode ("When Mother Gets Married") that he directed where he also mentioned "Connie" instead of Shirley. (The notes are yellow pages near the bottom of the webpage that you can see in closeup if you click on them.)

The Ohio setting would explain the Ohio road sign in the garage.
