There it was on the wall next to the door, the thing which made my jaw slap the floor tiles, something so unbelievable--LISA WAS GOING TO APPEAR WITH FULL BAND AT AN OUTDOOR CONCERT IN RICHLAND, WA., AUGUST 15TH, 1987!! TICKETS ONLY $6.00!! I AM
SO THERE!! On the bottom of the poster with this announcement
was a caption Say NO to drugs, say yes to God, Family, and career goals. So I went to the counter, bought that ticket--and WOULD GOOD THINGS NEVER END?? There was also a DRAWING FOR TEN LUCKY PEOPLE FOR DINNER WITH LISA!! PUT ON YOUR
RIB-BIBS, LISA BABY, BIG BAD MOON DADDY'S GOIN' GRUBBIN'!!
So after stuffing the ballot box like a drag queen's bra, I left, waltzing on sunbeams, rejoicing at the blessings God had dropped on my lap. So I worked through the days, counting down the moments before SHOWTIME...
In between hours of slaving in the orchards, strolling through town and hanging out in a local pub, I psyched myself up for the big trip to the Tri-Cities area. I went to the church and added to the Sunday School and Bible study discussions. It was Stone Church, an Assemblies of God church whose members were friendly, helpful, and though their doctrine was a little too hardcore for my tastes, I enjoyed myself. I even enjoyed it more
when I went across the way to the Lutheran church next door, which had a huge library full of exciting books designed to expand the the most under-developed muscle in the human body--the INTELLECT--finally!! A SMART church. I can THINK once more!
And the ladies at the Lutheran church were very nice, we got into fun discussions about things--and I even was invited to their ice cream social! The Stone Church people were nice, too, and I got to know quite a few people there, like the young man whose great dream in life was to attend Jimmy Swaggart Bible College in
Louisiana and study under a great leader of the Christian faith.
Another guy told his friends that I was "a really cool guy" and other young people felt that I added life to the group. I attended picnics and swim parties with them, driving past fields of hops baking in the sun which smelled like warm beer (there was a brewery in the area). But one person I was TOTALLY afraid of was one of the pastors who absolutely frightened me on my very first day in Yakima back in June at the church. After using the church facilities to scout for jobs, etc., the people there invited me
to stick around for a Bible study group that evening. Great idea, I
could get acquainted with people, maybe find some work. So as I
sat there in the church lobby waiting for the Bible study to begin,
this pastor comes in, takes a look at me sitting there with my sleeping bag and stuff, then says in this booming intimidating voice,"Okay, pal,we aren't going to have you just sitting around, we got people like you coming in here everyday--you'd better get in that Bible study right now!" I wasn't about to tell him that that was in fact what I was waiting for. (I KNOW, WHAT THIS HAS TO DO WITH THE STORY AT HAND, RELAX, I'M GOING SOMEWHERE WITH THIS.) (The Time Lord needs to take a time-out..._
