Penn. Woman Gives Birth To Sextuplets
3 Boys, 3 Girls Born Last Week; Remain In Critical Condition

(CNN) -- A Pennsylvania woman has given birth to sextuplets in what she described Monday as a "miracle." Stacey Carey and her husband, Brendan, welcomed three girls and three boys -- Emma, Samantha, Olivia, John, Patrick and Connor -- at Abington Memorial Hospital, in Abington, Pennsylvania, last week. The infants remain in critical condition.
"We also have a 16-month-old daughter, so our family of nine is now complete," the mom told a roomful of reporters, eliciting laughs. "We weren't expecting a family this big, but we're happy now." The babies were conceived with the help of fertility specialists and were delivered through a cesarean section at just 27 weeks, doctors said. All are receiving ventilator and IV support and continue to be at very high risk for complications.
"They are in no way out of the woods," said Gerard Cleary, a neonatologist, adding he thought it was too early to make any predictions with respect to a prognosis. About 60 people were involved in the babies' delivery and doctors said they had planned and practiced what they would do on the big day. "They did what they do every day, but they did it six times. So it was pretty spectacular," said Barbara Wadsworth, the hospital's senior vice president and chief nursing officer.
Pennsylvania is home to perhaps the world's most famous set of sextuplets. Jon and Kate Gosselin -- stars of the reality show "Jon & Kate Plus 8" -- welcomed their six children in 2004 at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
