I took a trip to the southern part of my state recently and found the remains of an old graveyard. It was once located next to a prison that had been closed down around 1930. All that is left is about a dozen headstones buried under tall weeds and shrub. I cleaned off one to see what it said,and found this;
Yesterday I saw the sun
The day before,there wasnt one
Tomorrow is supposed to rain they say
But I wont know, I am to die today

I guess he was executed in 1919.
Do cemeteries still put those on headstones ?
The only ones I visit are military cemeteries and they dont allow it.

I don't know about the headstones, but finding that cemetery must of been interesting. I love walking thru them and reading headstones and markers. It doesn't sound like there is much upkeep on that cemetery, which is sad.

You can put whatever you want on a headstone, as long as your paying for it.

In the woods behind my parent's house there is an abandoned cemetery which was used as the town's cemetery in the 1800's. The cemetery back then was situated on the road going into town but the road was diverted and the cemetery was forgotten. The woods have overtaken it,. There are a few headstones visible but you have to know where to look for them. The farmer who owned the land let his cows run over it and the stones are all lying down and some are cracked and crumbled..Most have sunk into the ground. There are a couple of cement posts lying there which I suppose a chain or fence was attached too. When I was a kid my siblings and I would go back there grave hunting and have picnics. I always thought that it was so sad that these people (dating as far back as the 1860's were forgotten. What really angers me is that a lot of those departed were relatives and ancestors of that farmer! I remember that one headstone had a weeping willow tree carved on it. Some names and dates were visible but just barely. I walked back there about 10 years ago and could only find 3 of the stones. It is so sad! What a shame!:(
