View Full Version : What Was Your Favorite Primetime Soap? Dallas? Dynasty? Falcon Crest? Hotel? Other? Brian Damage 06-06-2011, 09:42 PM Do or did you have a favorite Primetime soap? It could be anything from Knot's Landing to The Colby's to Desperate Housewives to Gossip Girl.... Mr. Television 06-06-2011, 10:00 PM It was and always will be Dallas. I first started watching in 1978 beginning with episode 12 and I never stopped until the finale. I bought Dallas books and I bought the Dallas record. I watched reruns for years and I bought all the DVDs. lol My second favorite soap was KL and it was a better show from start to finish than Dallas was. It never really JTS. I watched it when it first came on but I stopped and didn't watch it again until 1985 when I turned it on to see how they would deal with Bobby Ewing's death. So at least Bobby's death did have one good thing happen because of it. It made me a KL fan. I watched it from 1985 until it went off the air and eventually I saw the missing episodes from the seasons I missed. so for me, Dallas is #1 and KL is #2. I never could get into Falcon Crest and I didn't get into Dynasty until I watched it when FX aired it in the 1990's. Wow I noticed I made alot of mistakes. That's what happens when you don't proofread. lol McGillicuddy 06-06-2011, 10:19 PM Dynasty along with The Colbys for me. That was a fun "era". In the '90's Melrose Place. I never took the time to get into the others. Retro4Life 06-06-2011, 11:38 PM I never watched Falcon Crest but I heard good things about it. Liked Dynasty for a couple years but it just got really over the top with the long lost relatives and 'returns from the dead'. Dallas was the king for a long time. I loved the first few seasons but for me, after Jock (and Jim Davis) died, it went downhill some and after the horrible "Bobby's dead/not dead" season it was kind of unwatchable. For me, Knots Landing had the most complex characters and (somewhat at least) realistic storylines. I watched that show from the pilot to the finale, all fourteen seasons, and it's a rare example of a show that I thought actually had a decent ending for its characters. Wasn't as crazy about the reunion film, though. catlover79 06-06-2011, 11:46 PM I never really got to see many of the primetime soaps, but I do like what I've seen of Knots Landing, via DVD. When it was originally on, that was my Girl Scout leader's show. That's why we never had our weekly troop meetings on Thursdays. MickeyMac 06-07-2011, 04:55 PM Dallas all the way. I remember when they came back for the third season after J.R. got shot. It aired at a special time on Sunday at 10PM (instead of its usual 9PM on Fridays). I begged my mother to let me stay up and watch it, but it was a school night and had to go to bed. I did see it later in the season. MickeyMac 06-07-2011, 04:57 PM I never watched Falcon Crest but I heard good things about it. Liked Dynasty for a couple years but it just got really over the top with the long lost relatives and 'returns from the dead'. Dallas was the king for a long time. I watched that show from the pilot to the finale, all fourteen seasons, and it's a rare example of a show that I thought actually had a decent ending for its characters. Wasn't as crazy about the reunion film, though. I remember watching the episode where J.R., Bobby and Ray went to South America to look for Jock. At the end it showed that portrait of Jock, and thats when I first found out that Jim Davis had died. Mr. Television 06-07-2011, 06:01 PM I remember watching the episode where J.R., Bobby and Ray went to South America to look for Jock. At the end it showed that portrait of Jock, and thats when I first found out that Jim Davis had died. I was listening to the radio in the spring of 1981. The headline on the top of the news reported that one of the stars of Dallas was dead. That's how I found out about it. It shocked me. Watching the show in syndication, you can see that Jim Davis was ill . However, when you only watch it once a week and aren't looking for it , it isn't obvious. Mr. Television 06-07-2011, 06:03 PM I never really got to see many of the primetime soaps, but I do like what I've seen of Knots Landing, via DVD. When it was originally on, that was my Girl Scout leader's show. That's why we never had our weekly troop meetings on Thursdays. My 12th grade English teacher always told us about last night's Dynasty episode every Thursday. It was a ritual with her. I wanted to tell her to give it a rest. Dallas was the best soap. adamchandler 06-09-2011, 12:44 AM Knots Landing will always be my favorite soap/show period. I enjoyed others like Melrose place and Dallas, i couldn't get past the first 12 episodes of Falcon crest and tried my hardest to like dynasty because of the hype but didn't like it either. Coffeecup 06-10-2011, 06:48 PM I liked Dynasty, Dallas, Knots Landing and Falcon Crest. Didn't get into Flamingo Road. I thought 80's night time soap opera types show were great. I miss those days. I can't find much on now that I like. Mr. Television 06-10-2011, 07:30 PM I liked Dynasty, Dallas, Knots Landing and Falcon Crest. Didn't get into Flamingo Road. I thought 80's night time soap opera types show were great. I miss those days. I can't find much on now that I like. I liked Flamingo Road. I wonder why it didn't last longer? I guess because it was on NBC and NBC sucked back then...sort of like now. lol factsoflife 01-17-2012, 03:36 AM I loved so many primetime soaps, but my all-time favorite would have to be Beverly Hills, 90210, although Melrose Place is a close second. Schmoopie 01-17-2012, 03:38 AM I really got into Knott's Landing for a while. They would show it in the summer on CBS and they started showing 3 eps in a row. So you could go through a whole season in about a week! comedyfreak 01-18-2012, 06:47 AM Dallas and Dynasty and The Colbys for Barabara Stanwyck. I also liked Falcon Crest too. UMFaninMD 01-18-2012, 06:32 PM I watched all the big ones back in the 80's and my favorite was Knots Landing. I always thought it was more realistic despite a lot of the over-the-top plots because not everyone was super-duper wealthy. I also liked Berrenger's but that one didn't last long. Goldilocks 01-18-2012, 06:55 PM 1. Dallas 2. Falcon Crest mets82 01-18-2012, 09:22 PM My mother loves, loves Dallas. Its a good show. I wonder why they are not on anywhere. They aired episodes on CMT on Jan. 1, 2011 and then that was it. Very strange. My favorite is Beverly Hills 90210. I've watched it so often I can probably recite some of the episodes word for word. I also liked Melrose Place. factsoflife 01-19-2012, 09:44 PM Dallas and Dynasty and The Colbys for Barabara Stanwyck. I also liked Falcon Crest too. I love your Avatar! That's Erika Slezak as Niki Smith right? ThomasE 01-19-2012, 10:45 PM I watched all the big ones back in the 80's and my favorite was Knots Landing. I always thought it was more realistic despite a lot of the over-the-top plots because not everyone was super-duper wealthy. I also liked Berrenger's but that one didn't last long. Knots was my favorite as well. Loved me some Gary and Valene along with Patricia Williams (in the later seasons). Who was Berringer? The actor in Picket Fences? factsoflife 01-20-2012, 12:16 AM Knots was my favorite as well. Loved me some Gary and Valene along with Patricia Williams (in the later seasons). Val was awesome! but I liked Gary best with deliciously evil Abby! comedyfreak 01-20-2012, 08:24 AM I love your Avatar! That's Erika Slezak as Niki Smith right? Right! LOL UMFaninMD 01-21-2012, 09:29 PM Knots was my favorite as well. Loved me some Gary and Valene along with Patricia Williams (in the later seasons). Who was Berringer? The actor in Picket Fences? Berrenger's was a short-lived 80's primetime soap about a department store: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berrenger%27s Oh, and I also forgot Twin Peaks. It got too weird at the end but it was still pretty original for its time. The theme song is absolutely gorgeous. Mr. Television 01-21-2012, 09:35 PM My mother loves, loves Dallas. Dallas aired on Soapnet for quite a few years. It's not airing anywhere else now though. It's returning as a new series this summer on TNT. I liked 90210 during the HS years. Melrose Place was my favorite show of the 1990's. Buffyboy323 01-22-2012, 01:50 AM Beverly Hills, 90210 and Melrose Place are still my all time favorites. Coffeecup 01-22-2012, 11:15 AM Val was awesome! but I liked Gary best with deliciously evil Abby! I enjoyed Knots too, specially in the early years. I didn't watch it in the last 2 or so years. I remember a scene in the early years with Gary going thru detox and the scene with him going thr withdrawals was so graphic, as least it was to me, that it made me shiver. I felt Ted should get an emmy for the portrayal. CHERISLAND 01-23-2012, 12:17 AM My favorite prime-time soaps were and still are: Dallas Dynasty Falcon Crest Flamingo Road In addition, if you look at present day shows I would add Desperate Housewives and Revenge. catlover79 01-23-2012, 04:15 AM I always considered the 1999-2002 NBC drama Providence as a primetime soap, so I'm adding it to the list. It's also where Jon Hamm got his big break. factsoflife 01-23-2012, 04:51 PM I always considered the 1999-2002 NBC drama Providence as a primetime soap, so I'm adding it to the list. It's also where Jon Hamm got his big break. I loved that show! but as somebody from Rhode Island, i must say, they got A LOT wrong about Providence on that show. AB 01-23-2012, 04:59 PM Knots Landing was also my favorite. Each week I could hardly wait to see what mischief & mayhem Abby would cause. Dallas was my second favorite. catlover79 01-29-2012, 03:34 PM I loved that show! but as somebody from Rhode Island, i must say, they got A LOT wrong about Providence on that show. It seems less and less people remember it these days. :( Yooch 01-29-2012, 03:40 PM Really got hooked on Dallas. I really looked forward to seeing it every week. That was a good show too. Retro4Life 01-29-2012, 07:42 PM It seems less and less people remember it these days. :( My mother loved Providence, so I will always remember it. :) Mr. Television 01-29-2012, 08:02 PM My mother loved Providence, so I will always remember it. :) The theme song of Providence was sung at my HS Graduation. I always loved that song. catlover79 01-30-2012, 01:33 AM Glad to see the Providence love. Melina K. is an Akron girl, so of course we Ohioans love her. :D The guy who runs the Falcon Crest blog is a GENIUS when it comes to swapping themes and opening sequences from the other soaps. So here is FC getting the Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing, and Flamingo Road treatments. :D c4_nsKj7wD0 vQ4RSYdPqLs xAhcXg4wb2Y PcTutAYOc98&feature=related Happy321 03-09-2012, 06:19 PM Hands down, Knots Landing! Dallas would be my second choice. I am hoping to buy the whole series of Knots as it is my all-time favorite! McGillicuddy 04-30-2012, 10:53 PM I always considered the 1999-2002 NBC drama Providence as a primetime soap, so I'm adding it to the list. It's also where Jon Hamm got his big break. Is the young guy in this picture's head photoshopped? Schmoopie 04-30-2012, 11:18 PM I watched Dallas faithfully back in the "Who Shot JR" days, but I'd say that Knotts Landing was my favorite. It used to come on really late at night (like 1am) and for a while our local CBS station in Dallas was showing 3 episodes at a time so I really got hooked on it quickly! I watched Hotel for a while but I don't think I was ever really hooked on it. But that was a good show comedyfreak 05-01-2012, 11:49 PM It was and always will be Dallas. I first started watching in 1978 beginning with episode 12 and I never stopped until the finale. I bought Dallas books and I bought the Dallas record. LOL There was JR Beer? TuTi 06-25-2012, 11:31 PM Dynasty jamier42 06-26-2012, 04:59 AM Dallas Falcon Crest comedyfreak 06-26-2012, 08:15 AM There was JR Beer? Yes there was, I seen it at the liquor store the caption said, if you have to ask how much it cost, you probably couldn't afford it. Mr. Television 06-26-2012, 08:48 AM But did you buy JR Beer? LOL I actually do have it. It remains unopen. A friend gave it to me for Christmas one year. comedyfreak 06-26-2012, 10:27 PM How cool...It might be worth something. CindyHalsey 09-13-2013, 07:07 AM Falcon Crest is one of the most unique soap I've ever seen! Falcon Crest is a Vintage Drama classic on its finest! It’s one on the best soap opera show I’ve ever seen. Falcon Crest gives a different perspective to its viewers. It’s a show about the feud between Channing and Gioberti families over the Falcon Crest winery. I wouldn’t spoil so much about it for the ones who haven’t seen this best primetime series yet. All I can say is that the storyline was so upright and all the actors did their best to portray their roles most especially Angelia Channing. All the season are such a blast. Up to now, I'm still watching this show during weekends from the DVD collection I bought from yourdvdcorner.com. I'm just happy for having this whole collection w/ the entire episodes from the full 9 seasons which is nicely preserved. Falcon Crest is one of the best show from the 80’s - a very unique primetime soap and that introduce its viewers into world of vineyard. tlc38tlc38 09-13-2013, 11:09 AM I NEVER missed an episode of "Desperate Housewives". Still to this day, even though it's not airing, it still holds a special place with me. I felt connected to the characters like they were part of my family. Corkys-Place 09-18-2013, 02:16 AM I never watched any of those Dynasty's or Dallas shows as I was too young. My all-time fav Primetime Soap in the 1990's was Melrose Place. Amazing how it went from a bland show on the verge of being cancelled to an all out action packed Soap. Although I must admit Seasons 6 & 7 lacked the magic of the earlier Seasons. :( Coffeecup 09-18-2013, 07:07 PM I wish one the retro stations would bring back Peyton PLace. It was one of the first night time soaps that aired twice a week back in the 1960's. catlover79 09-19-2013, 10:37 PM It also would be nice to see it pop up on DVD. Hey, it launched the careers of two big-time film stars (Mia Farrow and Ryan O'Neal). Vahan 09-19-2013, 11:23 PM There have actually been a couple of DVD sets (Parts 1 & 2) from Shout Factory. They had episodes 001-031 and 032-064, but nothing since. catlover79 09-20-2013, 09:22 AM There have actually been a couple of DVD sets (Parts 1 & 2) from Shout Factory. They had episodes 001-031 and 032-064, but nothing since. Really? Learn something new every day. Thanks!! Vahan 09-20-2013, 09:53 AM And the other thing I've got to say about the TV Show version of Peyton Place: What is interesting, or rather creepy, depending on how you look at it, is that the series had not one, but two connections to the controversial filmmaker Roman Polanski. 1) Mia Farrow, who starred on the show from 1964-1966, would be made into a bigger star by Polanski in 1968's Rosemary's Baby, his first of two American motion pictures. 2) Barbara Parkins, who starred on the series for the entire run, also starred with Polanski's slain wife, Sharon Tate, in what is known as the signature film of Sharon Tate, 1967's Valley of the Dolls. Barbara even attended Sharon and Polanski's wedding in January of 1968. McGillicuddy 09-20-2013, 11:10 AM They should just release Peyton Place as a complete box set, just like they're doing with Mary Hartman. catlover79 09-23-2013, 01:52 PM And the other thing I've got to say about the TV Show version of Peyton Place: What is interesting, or rather creepy, depending on how you look at it, is that the series had not one, but two connections to the controversial filmmaker Roman Polanski. I know that Kasey Rogers (Louise Tate #2, Bewitched) was on PP, did she do both shows at the same time, since Louise Tate was only a recurring role? Coffeecup 09-24-2013, 11:34 AM It is fun to see an actress like Kasey Rogers play a so different part. On Peyton she was ? having an affair with was Father Harrington and on Bewitched so average type housewife. . It in the early 1980's that I saw Peyton Place but would love to see it again. Vahan 09-24-2013, 12:58 PM I should also point out a few more things about Peyton Place: It was seen on local syndication, USA Network in the 1980's, and the Romance Channel in the last decade. Crusinforabrusin 01-10-2016, 07:46 PM Peyton Place scrapple 01-10-2016, 09:01 PM Isn't it strange how Barbara Parkins seemed on the verge of real stardom one minute (Peyton Place, Valley Of The Dolls), the really just disappeared after that? Did she ever do anything else? Coffeecup 01-11-2016, 01:57 PM I happened to see Barbara in Valley of the Dolls a few weeks ago. It would be nice if a retro station ran it their Binge type marathons. I do wish these binge marathon would be shorter in length. I can't stay up all night to see all the episodes which I would sometimes want to do. Edison 01-12-2016, 01:17 AM She's pretty much the only reason to see The Kremlin Letter. P.S. Peyton Place. verajay 04-23-2016, 05:59 PM DYNASTY lakesgirl 04-25-2016, 04:48 PM Knots Landing. It was the most realistic in my opinion. AMackII 03-12-2019, 02:04 PM I prefer Knots Landing. one of the greatest nighttime soaps from the 80s. TSMIV 03-12-2019, 09:50 PM Dallas. Larry Hagman was hilarious as J.R. Ewing. Christopher 03-16-2019, 07:25 PM I NEVER missed an episode of "Desperate Housewives". Still to this day, even though it's not airing, it still holds a special place with me. I felt connected to the characters like they were part of my family. Does that count as a primetime soap? I only ask because it was considered a comedy as well and even nominated in the comedy category at reward shows. My all time favorite is Melrose Place seasons 2 - 4. Those were the best seasons to watch of this series. I feel Marcia Cross owned this show with her character. She had the best, craziest, out there stories ever for a soap. Once season 5 started, they had way too many characters that drowned out the craziness fans loved. If Desperate Housewives is considered a primetime soap, this is my second favorite. While it was an ensemble cast keeping the show going, my personal favorite was Marcia Cross because her character had the best one liners. ThisLittlePiggy 03-17-2019, 01:28 AM 1. Felicity 2.
