Though primarily a comedy, there were a few times when I felt it was something deeper. One time was when Sophia was volunteering at the hospital and was helping a boy with AIDS not to succumb to the disease by pointing out that just because there's no cure now, you never know when they might have a medical break-thru. It could even be tomorrow, so he should continue fighting and having a positive attitude, and the boy's spirit does in fact seem to be lifted a little.. Shows that beneath her caustic exterior, Sophia had a heart of gold.

I was wondering if there were other such instances which made an impression like this on people.

That was one of the magical parts of the GG: a terrifically funny show with real moments of life captured here and there. A few stand out in my head. One was at the end of one episode (I think it was "not another Monday"), Sophia holds up a newborn baby and says "You're just starting out" and the frame freezes with Sophia smiling and holding up the baby. Very touching considering Sophia/Estelle is gone now. Of course, the newborn is now in his or her mid 20s!

The first thing that came to mind for me isn't really any dialogue or plot point in the show, but rather Dorothy/Bea's rendition of What'll I Do in the episode Journey to the Center of Attention. The song, and her delivery, just gives me this meloncholy feeling and I cry every time.

I don't know the name of the episode, but it is where Blanche goes as a substitute on a blind date for Dorothy because Dorothy won tickets to see Beatlemania.

At the end of the episode Blanche is telling Rose about what she is doing with her date...they are going to take it slow and have an old-fashioned romance. Rose says "Take it slow. An old-fashioned romance. How does this all make you feel?"

Blanches says "Like a lady."

I tear up every time I see her say that.

I am so bothered by the Hallmark editing of this episode...now we only see the little boy come out, there is no talking to him at all...this whole part of the storyline is now gone from this episode on Hallmark. :( :(

I like the episode where Rose has to have a test to discover if she has aids. Sophia had a very realistic reaction to Rose finding out...even putting a R on the cups. But when she got to the table...she said...give me that cup....the one with the R on it..to show they are in it together!

When Blanche, Dorothy and Sophia go to pick up Rose from the hospital, and the nurse explains she went into cardiac arrest and was being prepped for surgery. They wre completely taken off guard and devistatedly shocked!

Before the ending with Sophia picking up the baby, she talks a friend out of killing herself and they both start to cry.

Sophia's relationship with a new friend who turns out to have Alzheimer's, and at the end she's sitting on a bench at the beach the two would share. Another guy sits down and she yells at him to get up because that seat's taken.

On the final episode, Blanche asks Rose and Sophia to stay with her because they are family.

This is the one that came to mind for me too. When Sophia says she doesn't want to visit Alvin in NYC because she'd rather remember him there at the beach, I get choked up. Add to this that was my grandmother's way of thinking when it came to sick friends and Sophia looks a tad bit like her. That scene gets me every time.

Actually anytime Sophia shows her sensitive side is touching. In the episode when her son Phil died, she covered her feelings by joking and bickering with her daughter-in-law, until the end when she broke down, and embraced Angela.

is when Blanche has her dream, and she says, "Good night George" after the girls leave the bedroom.

Also, when Rose flashes back to St. Olaf and she tells Charlie that she's going to move to Florida.

I just thought of another moment. At the end of the episode where Rose and Miles part ways, Rose reads part of a Robert Frost poem.
"When to the heart of man
Was it ever less than a treason
To bow and accept the end
Of a love or a season?"
Tears every time.

The last episode and Rose "talking to Charlie are touching. I could tell that Betty was proabably thinking of her husband Allan who passed away in 1981.

When they win the scratch off ticket and accidentally give it away to charity then have to find it at a homeless shelter. In the end they realize they were being selfish in regards to the money and not realizing how many people didnt even have a home or food to eat :(

Pretty much every tender mother/daughter scene between Dorothy and her ma, Sophia.

I thought one of the most touching moments was the first season episode of when the girls thought Sophia was dying and she admits to Dorothy that she has always been her favorite. You can tell that kind of startled Dorothy because she didn't expect it, but at the same time is touched that her mother felt that way about it because she always thought prior to this that Gloria was her favorite.

I think one of the most touching moments for me was when Sophia was worried about Dorothy when she had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The doctors kept saying there was nothing wrong but Sophia knew deep down there was. She was talking to Blanche and Rose in the kitchen.
"What if she's dying and they just don't know it." Sad.

Another one is the episode where Rebecca gives birth to Aurora and she and Blanche are holding the baby in the end. The scene freezes on their tears and smiles. Beautiful scene.

I think the one that gets me the most is the last episode of the last season after Dorothy walks out one last time. Blanche, Rose and Sophia are holding each other and crying. Even I couldn't keep the tears at bay. :(
