Bangor, Maine -- Aisle one: light bulbs. Aisle two: plumbing supplies. Aisle three: duck. A mother duck opted to move out of her swamp residence and nestle her home -- eggs and all -- among the gardening supplies inside a Maine Home Depot store. Instead of escorting the duck off the premises, Home Depot employees have been taking care of the bird and trying to give her some peace of mind.
"I make sure she has food every morning. I change her water out a couple times a day," said Home Depot employee Brenda Hatch. "If she dumps her food when she takes off, I make sure she has clean food again." Hatch said the busy store doesn't bother the duck, and signs warn customers to keep their distance. "I think she's just so used to all the noise and all the people, they don't bother her," said Hatch.
Once her eggs hatch, the store will evict the family and attempt to relocate the nest to a nearby marsh. "Hopefully, within 24 hours of her hatching the eggs, we can get her out to the swamp out back. That's probably where she's from," said Hatch. They do, however, expect that the duck will return next year. "We got her out of here last year before she actually got to lay the eggs and she came back to the same spot, so this was probably her house before we invaded it," said Hatch.
