Lake Worth, Fla. -- A Lake Worth man is proof it's never too late to go back to school. Billy D. Armstrong dropped out of high school as a senior, but the 76-year-old received his general equivalency diploma from Lake Worth High School and planned to attend Tuesday's graduation ceremonies at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Armstrong said he decided to return to school after he learned he needed a high school diploma to become a professional masseuse in Florida. He tried going back in his 60s but couldn't finish the requirements because of health issues. He started again last year, attending night classes at the school during the week.
Now that he's got the paper, Armstrong said he intends to teach other students about the importance of staying in school. "The diploma is a necessity in your life," Armstrong told WPBF 25 News. "I still tear up from it."
