Chris Meloni will not be reporting back for duty when Law & Order: Special Victims Unit launches its 13th season this fall, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Protracted talks between the actor — who has played Detective Stabler since the NBC crime drama’s 1999 debut — and studio NBC Universal broke down on Tuesday, says a source. Franchise creator Dick Wolf is said to already be searching for a big name to bring in opposite the series’ female lead, Mariska Hargitay.

Hargitay’s own deal to return for Season 13 remains unaffected.

Just last week, new NBC boss Robert Greenblatt told TVLine he felt the network was in “pretty great shape” as far as Meloni’s prospective deal goes, though he did allow for the possibility of SVU one day moving forward minus its two original leads. In fact, there was very recently talk that Jennifer Love Hewitt (Ghost Whisperer) might join the series midway through the coming season to replace Hargitay.

“Jennifer Love is somebody we’ve been circling,” Greenblatt told us, “but I don’t know that that is going to happen at all.”

An NBC spokesperson had no comment for this story.

Well I'm done with the show then. I have no intention of watching a new set of detectives. Olivia's going to be promoted upstairs too at midseason. They're trying to turn this show into the mothership.

Same here, no Stabler, no me watching. Mariska & Chris ARE the show. I like JLH, but she cannot fill Mariska nor Chris's shoes

and pffftt Chris can't be replaced, I don't know why they bother trying

RIP SVU, the 13th season will be the last

Stabler needs to stay to the end, it just won't be the same without him.

With both Meloni and Hargitay leaving, you might as well stick a fork in SVU. The original show just limped along after the departure (and soon after, passing) of Jerry Orbach. While that couldn't be helped, and while all these choices to leave were the actors', it just seems to be time to retire the whole franchise.

Think about it - there are enough episodes of each and every L&O show for it to be its own 24-hour cable channel. It's not like Dick Wolf isn't already rolling in dough with the syndication and DVD deals.

If Meloni and Hargitay are leaving, I'm done watching SVU. I'm not going to watch some new hack actor in place of Meloni. IMO, SVU is doing good and if Meloni leaves, that's going to ruin the show. If Hargitay leaves as well, SVU is committing suicide. Just end the show now, before it gets ruined. Besides Meloni leaving a writer Neal Baer is leaving as well. So lets see, SVU has already lost B.D. Wong, now Chris Meloni, Neal Baer and possibly Mariska Hargitay. Law & Order: SVU isn't going to last much longer. This totally sucks!!
