View Full Version : The Horror Movie 'Carrie' Set to Be Remade
Brian Damage 05-19-2011, 08:32 PM Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the playwright and comic book writer who was brought on to rewrite and hopefully save Broadway's Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark, has booked several projects to follow. On the TV side, he'll become a co-producer and writer of the hit series Glee. And I'm told that he's just been set by MGM and Screen Gems to write a remake of Carrie, the Stephen King thriller about the hyperkinetic teenagers who gets pushed too far at the prom and wreaks havoc on her fellow high school students. King's bestselling book was turned into the 1976 film that starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, Amy Irving and Piper Laurie as the repressive mother.
For Aguirre-Sacasa, these diverse projects are right in his wheelhouse. On Carrie, he will write a version that is more faithful to the King book than the earlier movie, much the same as Joel and Ethan Coen went back to the Charles Portis novel True Grit to present a version that didn't really feel like a remake. Aguirre-Sacasa has a relationship with the author, after writing the graphic novel version of King's The Stand, King's seminal apocalyptic novel.

More faithful doesn't always equal better, IMO the TV version of The Shining is a prime example of this.

Hot off the news that MGM and Screen Gems have hired playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to pen the upcoming remake of Carrie, Entertainment Weekly caught up with Stephen King to get his thoughts on the matter.
"I've heard rumblings about a 'Carrie' remake, as I have about 'The Stand' and 'It,'. Who knows if it will happen? The real question is why, when the original was so good? I mean, it's not 'Casablanca' or anything, but a really good horror-suspense film, much better than the book.
Piper Laurie really got her teeth into the bad-mom thing. Although Lindsay Lohan as Carrie White ... hmmm. It would certainly be fun to cast. I guess I could get behind it if they turned the project over to one of the Davids: Lynch or Cronenberg."

I have a book of interviews with King, and he says a few times that he thought the 1976 version was better than his book. He liked the changes they made and thought it was better paced.

Do you ever see The Rage: Carrie 2?
What did you think of it? I haven't seen it in years and don't remember it much.

I didn't like it much, but it's been years since I've seen it too.

To be fair it's only the second remake, look at how many times Dracula, Frankenstein, and Tarzan have been done.
UMFaninMD 05-20-2011, 10:13 PM I actually preferred the TV version of "The Shining." I just didn't care for Jack Nicholson's hammy performance.
I wonder if this Carrie remake, while apparently sticking more to the book, will be updated for today's audience, with references to Twitter, Facebook, etc. I also can't see Lindsay Lohan as Carrie---she's more suited to Chris I think. Angela Bettis, the Carrie in the TV remake, should reprise her role. She has that "outcast on the verge of going mad" look that's perfect.

Well, I guess you've got a point there.

This was my initial reaction as well, Monika...

Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde springs to mind here, too. Countless remakes of this one, and 'reimaginings" or whatever.
There's a difference, though. Dracula, Frankenstein, Tarzan, et al were more grandly themed works, and I think are more ripe for interpretation. Carrie is at its heart, a more intimate, simple tale and there's not nearly so much room for the artist's vision to come into play. Just my opinion of course.

I also thought Angela Bettis was great in the TV remake. I liked that remake except for the ending.

Sorry if I'm reading this wrong, but Jack Nicholson only starred in the 1980 big-screen version.

I didn't like the ending either, they did it that way because the network had planned on it being turned into a weekly series.

There are rumors that Lindsay Lohan is being considered for the title role in the remake of Carrie.
Today, Megan Fox has announced that she wants the role.
According to a source close to Fox, "Megan is a huge fan of the original and would love the chance to play the lead... She's told her people to make it happen."

Yep, and Christine will be a Prius, Cujo will be a Chihuahua, and The Shining will take place at a Motel 6.
How about instead of remaking Carrie (again) they adapt some of King's stories that have never been made? I'd love to see a movie of The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon.

I remember reading a few years ago George Romero wanted to adapt that into a film, but I never heard anything since.
I'd love to see an adaptation of The Long Walk, though I doubt that will ever happen.

Me, too. That's one of my favorite King/Bachman works. But I suppose Hollywood would just muck it up anyway.

Let's give credit where credit is due, Hollywood has done some very good adaptations of King's work, although I think the best adaptations were on television (The Stand, The Langoliers, and IT all jump to mind).

Good point. Just seems like recently most of the adaptations I've seen (of King and others) haven't been very good.
I loved The Dead Zone, thought Christine and Cat's Eye were good. I also enjoyed Stand By Me, and the TV films you listed, as well as Salem's Lot.
Oh, and Carrie was quite good. Duh, how'd I forget that one? The Shining...had it's moments. Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, also very good.

I guess I didn't clarify enough. I didn't care for Jack Nicholson's performance in the theatrical version.

JamesG 06-02-2011, 12:47 PM Hailee Steinfeld in Talks for Carrie Remake
By Aiden Redmond
Posted Jun 2nd 2011
After stealing the spotlight right out from under Jeff Brides and Matt Damon in True Grit last year, it looks like things are gonna start turning up Hailee over the next year.
Already slated to star in an upcoming remake of Romeo and Juliet, 14-year-old Steinfeld is now being eyed to take on the iconic role of Carrie White for the upcoming remake of Brian De Palma's 1976 horror classic.
Definitely promising news for those of us who think this movie has "unnecessary" written all over it, and definitely an upgrade from the idea of having 25-year-old bombshell Megan Fox play a timid, unpopular high school senior. She never really struck us as the Sissy Spacek–type.
No word yet on the release date or the director, but now that they've nailed down 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' scribe Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa to take care of the script, it looks like this thing is really happening. [via CinemaBlend]
