View Full Version : Does anyone hate VHS's....
OH Nuts! 05-16-2011, 02:59 PM as much as I do? Ever since DVDs came out, I've come to hate this old and cumbersome medium more and more. Finally (and I mean FINALLY - as in I should have done this at least 5 yrs ago) I'm converting the 100 or so I have left to DVD and its coming marvelously. I feel like such a jerk for not doing it sooner. Viva la DVD (and Blue Ray) although DVDs still awe me that I could stay with them for a LOOOONG time.
I still use vhs tapes mainly to record the news and shows I only want to watch once but don't plan on keeping. But yeah they take up a lot of space & are kind of a pain. I've converted some of my tapes to dvd but not all. My husband has a dvr for the big tv but I never use it, it's too complicated. lol! Good luck on getting all your tapes coverted to dvd.
Family Ties Forever! 05-17-2011, 03:34 AM I remember when I first joined SO. I mentioned how I would never switch to dvds. I thought I would always stay with vhs. Never say never, lol. In the last few years I have switched and I don't own any vhs movies anymore. I bought the movies I wanted plus the movies my sister liked on dvd. It was expensive, but dvds take up less room. I can't imagine owning a tv show on vhs. That would take up so much room.
The only vhs tapes that are left are a few home movies and a copy of my college graduation. I don't own a vhs player anymore.
browneyes106 05-17-2011, 10:38 AM My parents still have quite a bit of movies on VHS and my nephews watch some of the kid movies. They stopped buying VHS in 2000 and since then all of us DVD or Blu-Ray.
I don't really hate VHS, the only thing I can't stand is rewinding and other issues.
Torgo 05-17-2011, 10:47 AM I still collect some VHS if I can't find it available in any other format. The only VHS I've kept when moving to DVD were the ones not yet released on DVD, and many of them still aren't. I also still have some of my laser discs, some because they aren't on DVD yet, and others because they are collectables.
dlemond 05-17-2011, 10:50 AM Rewind and Fast Forward are the kiss of death with any tape format.
And just try finding a certain scene or point on a tape.
Penny Lane 05-17-2011, 11:21 AM I still use vhs tapes to record. They are hard to find now days. I get mine from amazon.com. I have replaced most of my vhs movies with dvd's. By the time that I get through with that there will be something new again. :(
MickeyMac 05-17-2011, 11:30 AM I dont hate VHS tapes. I still have some stuff on VHS (mostly stuff that isnt on DVD and some stuff that never made it to VHS legally). Still got a working VCR, but like most people I tend to watch DVD's more.
Penny is right:
First it was VHS, then it was DVD, then it was Blu-Ray. Whats next Super Green-Ray HD????
dakert 05-17-2011, 12:14 PM I like having different options. I use my VCR to record and watch shows that arent available on DVD.
Has anyone here ever got stuck with a dirty (wont play) disc? :(
dlemond 05-17-2011, 12:18 PM Penny is right:

I don't know what will be next, but I can tell you when it will come out.
Right after I finish collecting every movie I love on Blu Ray.
Bewitched Brady 05-17-2011, 12:56 PM I still use vhs for recording programs that i won't be home for.Much easier as if you used a dvd then you can't record over what you just recorded on disc or can you? .
I have still many videos that are not availabe on dvd and when they are i will bin them. You will be amazed that not every movie is on dvd yet so i'm still waiting and then they will be turfed.
tiredmike59 05-17-2011, 01:27 PM I still have about 1100 VHS tapes,, I already converted most of them to DVD.
I think i will try a yard sale to get rid of them. I hate to just throw them away, I was born cheap so i have to try and get a dollar here and there.
Zoneboy 05-17-2011, 01:31 PM I still use vhs tapes to record. They are hard to find now days. I get mine from amazon.com. I have replaced most of my vhs movies with dvd's. By the time that I get through with that there will be something new again. :(
If you're looking for blank vhs tapes try Goodwill or any other thrift store in your area. I find sealed tapes quite often and usually for only $1 each.
JamesG 05-17-2011, 02:35 PM I still collect VHS because not only are there some movies not out on DVD but sometimes bonus material on the VHS doesn't make it to the other releases.
Material that I want saved I had transferred onto DVDs so that I don't get screwed if the tape ever gets destroyed.
I know off-hand that this happened with The Crow.
On the VHS release there was a little interview with Brandon Lee that did not make it to the DVD. The DVD had its own featurette that cropped some parts of the VHS interview but did not include the whole thing.
Some movie buffs do care about this so they try to collect all of the formats of a particular release because not all of the material on one goes to the other.
(This also happened with LaserDiscs)
As far as home recording goes, ever since I got the DVR I no longer need VHS to record off of the tv.
VHS isn't 100% dead yet.
Some movies still get a new VHS release (mainly it's a horror promotional gimmick) and recently on one of the "LOST" special edition DVDs a VHS was included that had a bonus feature on it.

Do you do Traders Post?
If so...would it be okay if I PM you or something?
As for VHS...I still keep them because you can do a lot with them...I just have to get a DVD Recorder one day...but I don't have the dough.:(

I dont know what they have where you live, but here one can find blank VHS tapes at places like Walgreens and Rite Aid.
treky 05-17-2011, 06:17 PM same here; and I thought they stopped relesing movie on VHS a while ago.

For mainstream Hollywood cinema the last VHS release was A History of Violence (2005).
Nowadays VHS is used as a promotional tool, mainly for horror flicks, with the VHS release of House of the Devil in 2009 and the upcoming re-release of Sledgehammer from 1983.
OH Nuts! 05-18-2011, 06:21 PM ...I just have to get a DVD Recorder one day...but I don't have the dough.:(
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Maybe you'll get lucky and someone who's going blue ray or to a combo unit will give you their old one.
DVD players have gotten very cheap ( 8 yrs ago mine was $99 and basic ones seem to have come down - & - maybe you'll come across a really good sale. Good luck.
Riley Martin 05-18-2011, 07:18 PM I miss absolutely nothing about VHS. The constant having to adjust the tracking, the crappy video quality and sound, rewinding, tapes jamming... you name it. Only time I have to mess with it today is when transferring something to DVD's, that's about it...;)
I own a DVD recorder and mainly record stuff off of satellite, but once in a while will transfer some of my old VHS's when in the mood.
JamesG 05-19-2011, 01:26 AM I figured to ask this here... does anyone remember the older VHS boxes that was closed on all 4 ends? It had a flap that opened on the side that the tape came out of.
I was wondering when they stopped making these?
Janice 05-19-2011, 01:32 AM I still use VHS tapes, but I don't have the need for a lot of them. Old habits are hard to break in my case.
treky 05-19-2011, 02:54 AM I still play VHS tapes every once in a while.
Zoneboy 05-19-2011, 03:03 AM I still miss beta, I'll take it over VHS or super VHS any day.
Torgo 05-19-2011, 08:54 AM I still miss beta, I'll take it over VHS or super VHS any day.
Beta was by far better quality than VHS.
Torgo 05-19-2011, 09:21 AM I like having different options. I use my VCR to record and watch shows that arent available on DVD.
Has anyone here ever got stuck with a dirty (wont play) disc? :(
You can clean DVD's fairly easy, and if it's scratched you can use tools that remove scratches, as long as the scratch isn't so deep you can see sunlight through the label side you can pretty much repair any disc. I had a store bought DVD that had a defect on the special features disc, there were little numbers on the surface, I use SkipDr and it removed the defect and the disc plays fine.
tv star collector 05-19-2011, 09:27 AM Having already transferred literally hundreds of Beta (remember that format?)
tapes to VHS, I am DEFINITELY not going through the same routine again
with VHS to DVD (even if I could, which I can't). In the first place, I don't have a DVD player with that capability and, even if I did, it's too time consuming and expensive. I still watch both VHS and DVDs, but I watch more
VHS simply because I have far more shows in that format. I don't mind so much the rewinding, but--since my VCR is hooked up to a 12" TV and my DVD
player to a 23" TV--I do prefer watching DVDs only because the screen is
bigger. I have a DVD/VCR combo unit--but the VCR part no longer works! So,
I only use it for watching DVDs.
old grouch 05-19-2011, 09:35 AM I prefer DVD's for movies and TV shows I want to collect and watch over and over again, but don't have a problem with VHS and I still have a VCR. You can get tapes at a second hand store or yard sale for a buck. Even if you just watch them once and then donate them back to the second hand store or give them to a friend, it's pretty cheap entertainment for a dollar.
tiredmike59 05-19-2011, 09:49 AM sure, let me know what you are looking for. mike
Family Ties Forever! 05-19-2011, 10:24 AM Beta was by far better quality than VHS.
Perhaps I'm too young (32) to remember beta. I clearly remember VHS, but not beta.

A man after my own heart. If I never see another VHS tape it won't be too soon. (Well, to be honest, I could live with 5 or less.) Two cassettes I was in the middle of trying to dub snapped. Thank God I got the mangled stuff out. My biggest fear is one will ruin the combo unit by being unretrievable. And Riley, in addition to all the good points you mention, VHSs take up a lot of space. I live in NYC where apts. tend to be small - so freeing up space is one more good reason. (There are so many.)
Torgo 05-19-2011, 04:09 PM Perhaps I'm too young (32) to remember beta. I clearly remember VHS, but not beta.
Both VHS and Beta were competing for the home video market, Beta came on the market before VHS, but VHS had cheaper machines, and longer recording times so it eventually beat out Beta. There were other formats that popped up and disappeared during that time.
I can remember going into video stores that were half VHS and half Beta, then slowly the Beta section got smaller and smaller.
MickeyMac 05-19-2011, 05:50 PM Around here the Goodwill Stores dont even take VHS tapes anymore. Saldy they have become almost worthless.
TVFactFan 05-21-2011, 07:03 PM There is still one thing that VHS tapes have over DVD
You can put in a tape and let it play for hours without changing tapes
DVD you can't do that
Dude111 04-30-2025, 07:29 AM And Vhs SOUNDS AND LOOKS better if its analogue sourced stuff your viewing....
The movie RUTHLESS PEOPLE (1986) I have was thankfully done with the original ANALOGUE AUDIO/VIDEO and its warm and sounds good.......
You wouldnt hear that on a DVD,you would hear cold flat garbage!!
1960'sTVfan 05-01-2025, 09:25 AM I use both, VHS and DVD. One advantage DVD has over VHS is that there's no rewinding. VHS tapes you have to rewind after you're done watching. With DVD there's no rewinding. Just pop the disc out of the player and return it to it's storage case.
Dude111 05-01-2025, 05:54 PM Yup that IS true!
GoldenTV 05-01-2025, 08:55 PM And Vhs SOUNDS AND LOOKS better if its analogue sourced stuff your viewing....
That is only true in Dude's world
Although analog, VHS have lowest resolution (240 line of resolution) of all the video formats. DVD have 540 line of resolution (same as Tube TV) and Bluray have 1080 line of video resolution (Flat TVs). When VHS video signal is fed to a TV, since the TV have higher resolution than VHS, then the TV will fill in the missing resolutions with artifacts. That is why VHS are more "fuzzy" than other video formats.
TheLittleFaerie 05-03-2025, 12:26 AM I miss VHS a lot. I have all my media on DVD and Blue Ray now days, mainly for space considerations, as I live in a small apartment, *except I do have the Nightmare on Elm Street series also on VHS, as that's just a CLASSIC, I love the dark look of those movies on VHS, and there are things on the VHS that never made it to DVD*
BUT when I want to watch something on DVD, it seems like it takes forever to start up the machine, handling the DVD like delicate china, put it in and wait 5 minutes for it to load, and then WAIT for 5 minutes during the BS on the DVD that you can't bypass, then FINALLY get to the main content.
I miss being able to just yank out a VHS, pop it in and BOOM you're ready to go! I've had VHSs that lasted over 20 years, they're durable enough. And I also love having multiple different things on a VHS, maybe an episode of Mama's Family, then 2 episodes of Sanford and Son, then an All in the Family episode, etc.... with DVD it's all ONE thing.
I also miss being able to just plop in a VHS and record something randomly from TV on the fly.
And call me a Boomer, but I ain't doing streaming, not beyond Youtube vids
Furienna 06-23-2025, 05:59 PM I know I should have my old VHS tapes digitalized, but it hasn't happened.
But I mostly use streaming and not even DVD these days...
Dude111 06-23-2025, 07:35 PM VHS is beautiful.it looks exactly like watching analogue cable :)
Babalu 06-28-2025, 07:28 AM I would never say that I hate VHS.
I think I still have 2 VHS players although I rarely use them. I used to have 6 or 7.
People are jaded now. VHS tapes were what opened up the vast library of movies to the world. In the 1980's, video stores opened up everywhere, not just Blockbuster. I was able to watch thousands of movies I had never seen before. Old movies, foreign movies, art house movies, cult movies, obscure movies, niche movies. Movies I wanted to see for years but were never in theaters.
Cable and streaming have opened up the world even more, but VHS started it.

If he likes the "look" of VHS, I'll tell him this: If I record a VHS signal on my DVD recorder, it will copy it exactly, and it will look exactly the same. So he simply likes this lower-resolution look that VHS produces.
Dude111 06-28-2025, 05:52 PM Well it looks as good as analogue TV Stevie, remember buddy??
1 thing I do not like about VCRs is:If you have a MONO VHS player, most of them do not play the audio correctly! (The left and channels are slightly lower volume)
THEY SHOULD ALL BE THE SAME AS IF THE MOVIE WAS RECORDED ON CENTER MIX!

I agree. It is also better to transfer VHS to DVDs since VHS is so finicky. The picture quality will degrade over time after each play due to wear and tear caused by friction.
Well it looks as good as analogue TV Stevie, remember buddy??
Not true. VHS have half resolution (or half picture quality) of analog TV :)
Dude111 06-29-2025, 04:35 AM Well I guess its what ya like buddy :)
VHS was the thing, but god, every time I pulled a tape out of the machine I was terrified it was gonna come out like this

Dude111 06-29-2025, 03:43 PM Ya I need a new "GO VIDEO" unit and the one I have is not working well ...... Its gotton tapes stuck inside,etc........ Very cheaply made and easy to malfunction......
But its a dream for miang copies of tapes!
I can tape from Deck A to Deck B and if I want I can disable HIFI and make it MONO and not stereo. (I always select Mono and disable HIFI (Just so the HIFI track isnt there on the copy))
