NEW FALL AND MIDSEASON SERIES:
DRAMA
“CHARLIE’S ANGELS”
Everyone deserves a second chance -- even a thief, a street racer and a cop who got in a little too deep. After all, the three women who solve cases for their elusive boss, Charlie Townsend, are no saints. They’re angels... Charlie’s Angels.
Set in Miami, this fun, glamorous, action-packed take on the 1970s smash hit series introduces us to three new angels, all fearless detectives, head-turning beauties and close friends. There’s Abby (Rachael Taylor), a Park Avenue princess who became a world-class thief. Then there’s Kate (Annie Ilonzeh), a Miami cop who fell from grace, losing both her career and her fiancé. Finally there’s Gloria, a disgraced army lieutenant who has a way with explosives. When one of the angels’ missions ends in Gloria’s tragic death, Charlie persuades them to partner with Gloria’s childhood friend, Eve (Minka Kelly), a street racer with a mysterious past. They may not know each other yet, but one thing’s for sure -- Abby, Kate and Eve will always have each others’ backs.
“Charlie’s Angels” stars Annie Ilonzeh (“General Hospital”) as Kate Prince, Minka Kelly (“Parenthood,” “Friday Night Lights”) as Eve, Rachael Taylor (“Grey’s Anatomy”) as Abby Sampson and Ramon Rodriguez (“The Wire,” “Daybreak”) as Bosley.
Written and executive-produced by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Smallville”), “Charlie’s Angels” is also executive-produced by Drew Barrymore (“Charlie’s Angels” movies), Leonard Goldberg (the original “Charlie’s Angels”) and Nancy Juvonen (“Charlie’s Angels” movies). It’s directed and executive-produced by Marcos Siega (“Vampire Diaries,” “Dexter”). “Charlie’s Angels” is produced by Millar/Gough Ink, Flower Films and Panda Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.
“GOOD CHRISTIAN BELLES”
The soap returns to Dallas in this wicked new drama that shows that you can go home again... but only if you’re ready to face the sins of your past.
Amanda Vaughn (Leslie Bibb), once the ultimate high school “mean girl,” is forced to return home in disgrace after her marriage ends in scandal. Amanda is nothing like the girl she was 20 years ago, but as her old classmates reacquaint themselves with the new Amanda, will her home town welcome her with open arms or seek revenge? No one in this town is a saint, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a heart. As Amanda and her teenage kids try to adjust to their new lives, the ladies from her past alternate between sympathy and scheming.
“Good Christian Belles” stars Leslie Bibb (“Iron Man”) as Amanda Vaughn, Kristin Chenoweth (“Pushing Daisies”) as Carlene Cockburn, Annie Potts (“Law and Order: Special Victims Unit,”“Joan of Arcadia”) as Gigi Stopper, Jennifer Aspen (“Rodney”) as Sharon Peacham, Miriam Shor (“Swingtown” “Damages”) as Cricket Caruth-Reilly, Marisol Nichols (“24”) as Heather Cruz, Brad Beyer (“Jericho”) as Zack Peacham, Mark Deklin (“Lone Star”) as Blake Reilly and David James Elliott (“JAG”) as Ripp Cockburn.
Based on Kim Gatlin’s hit book, Good Christian Bitches, “Good Christian Belles” is executive-produced by Darren Star (“Sex and the City”), Robert Harling (“Steel Magnolias”) and Aaron Kaplan. The pilot is written by Robert Harling and executive-produced and directed by Alan Poul. “Good Christian Belles” is produced by ABC Studios.
“MISSING”
Becca Winstone (Ashley Judd) learns that her son, Michael, disappears while studying abroad, and it’s a race against time when she travels to Europe to track him down. A surprising turn of events reveals just how far one mother will go to protect her family. Exotic locations and thrilling twists will keep you riveted in “Missing.”
How far would you go to save the only thing you have left in the world? At 8 years old, Michael watched as his father, CIA Agent Paul Winstone, was murdered. Now 10 years later, Paul’s wife, Becca, is faced with the reality of her son growing up. When Michael is afforded the opportunity to study abroad, his mother reluctantly agrees it’s time to let him go. Just a few weeks into his trip Michael disappears, and Becca immediately suspects foul play. When she arrives in Rome, she begins piecing together the clues left behind. It isn’t long before the kidnappers realize they’ve picked a fight with the wrong woman. Becca Winstone has a secret of her own -- before Paul’s death, she was also a lethal CIA Agent. But if she wants to find her son alive, Becca will have to rely on old friends and reopen old wounds. Her resourcefulness, skill and determination will be put to the test – but a mother’s love knows no limits.
“Missing” stars Ashley Judd (“Double Jeopardy,” “Kiss the Girls”) as Becca Winstone, Sean Bean (“Game of Thrones”) as Paul Winstone, Cliff Curtis (“Trauma”) as Dax, Adriano Giannini (“Oceans Twelve”) as Giancarlo, Nick Eversman (“Cinema Verite”) as Michael Winstone and Tereza Voriskova (“Borgia”) as Oksana.
“Missing” comes from writer Gregory Poirier (“National Treasure: Book of Secrets”) and executive producers Gina Matthews, Grant Scharbo (“The Gates”), Steve Shill (Emmy winner for directing “Dexter” who will direct episodes of “Missing”) and James Parriott (“Sons of Anarchy”). “Missing” is produced by Stillking Films.
“ONCE UPON A TIME”
From the inventive minds of “Lost” executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis comes a bold new imagining of the world, where fairy tales and the modern-day are about to collide.
And they all lived happily ever after – or so everyone was led to believe. Emma Swan knows how to take care of herself. She’s a 28-year-old bail bonds collector who’s been on her own ever since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Henry is now 10 years old and in desperate need of Emma’s help. He believes that Emma actually comes from an alternate world and is Snow White and Prince Charming’s missing daughter. According to his book of fairytales, they sent her away to protect her from the Evil Queen’s curse, which trapped the fairytale world forever, frozen in time, and brought them into our modern world. Not only are these flyboys and girls young and good looking, but to represent Pan Am they also have to be educated, cultured and refined. They’re trained to handle everything from in-air emergencies to unwanted advances – all without rumpling their pristine uniforms or mussing their hair. There’s Dean (Jonah Lotan) – a cocky, charismatic and ambitious new pilot – the first of a new breed not trained in the war. On the sly against company policy, he’s dating Bridget, a stunning beauty with a mysterious past. A rebellious bohemian, Maggie (Christina Ricci) turns into a buttoned up professional for work so she can see the world. Today it’s a woman’s world, and this man’s man is on a mission to get men back to their rightful place in society.
Tim Allen returns to ABC in this new comedy from Jack Burditt (“30 Rock”). Men may have built civilizations, invented the locomotive and created ESPN, but they’re about to find out that it’s not a man’s world anymore. You can’t get manlier than Mike Baxter. He’s the marketing director for an iconic outdoor sporting goods store, he loves to have adventures while he’s traveling for work and, of course, he drives a pick-up truck. While Mike is king of the hill at work, he’s the odd man out in a home that is dominated by women -- namely his wife, Vanessa, and their three daughters, 22- year-old Kristin, 17-year-old Mandy and 14-year-old Eve. After being a stay-at-home mom for years, Vanessa recently returned to the workplace and was quickly promoted (much to the dismay of her primarily male co-workers). As a result of Vanessa’s increased work load, Mike is pulled into more hands-on parenting than ever before.

Three modern men try to get in touch with their inner tough guys and redefine what it means to be a “real man” in this funny and relatable comedy.
Will’s grandfather fought in WWII. Will’s father fought in Vietnam. Will plays Call of Duty on his PS3 and drinks non-dairy hazelnut creamer. So what happened to all the real men? They’re still here -- they just smell like pomegranate body wash now. Meet Will (Mather Zickel). His evolved, sensitive nature is why his awesome wife, Theresa (Teri Polo), married him. But Will and his friends find themselves wondering -- in a world of Axe ads and manscaping -- what does it really mean to be a guy anymore? Will is more interested in finding the perfect gift for his son Nathan’s (Jake Johnson) 13th birthday than in doing his job selling insurance; sensitive soul Craig (Christopher Moynihan) still pines for his college ex, Lisa; and Kenny (Dan Fogler) clamps down on his anger and asks himself, “What would Tobey Maguire do?,” when his ex, Brenda (Amanda Detmer), starts seeing a guy (Henry Simmons) who is everything he’s not and much better looking. “SUBURGATORY”
Single father George only wants the best for his 16-year-old daughter, Tessa. So when he finds a box of condoms on her nightstand, he moves them out of their apartment in New York City to a house in the suburbs. But all Tessa sees is the horror of over-manicured lawns and plastic Franken-moms. Being in the ‘burbs can be hell, but it also may just bring Tessa and George closer than they’ve ever been.
Tessa (Jane Levy) and George (Jeremy Sisto) have been on their own ever since Tessa’s mom pulled a “Kramer vs. Kramer” before she was even potty trained. So far, George has done a pretty good job of raising Tessa without a maternal figure in their lives, but suddenly he’s feeling a little out of his league. So it’s goodbye New York City and hello suburbs. At first Tessa is horrified by the big-haired, fake-boobed mothers and their sugar-free Red Bull-chugging kids. But little by little she and her dad begin finding a way to survive on the clean streets of the ‘burbs. Sure, the neighbors might smother you with love while their kids stare daggers at your back, but underneath all that plastic and caffeine, they’re really not half bad. And they do make a tasty pot roast.

With unemployment an ongoing issue and women now outnumbering men in the workforce, the new comedy series “Work It” follows two alpha males who realize the only way to beat the current “mancession” and land a job in pharmaceutical sales is to pass themselves off as women. Combining all the best elements of the workplace comedy, the buddy comedy and the family comedy, “Work It” centers on Lee Standish (Ben Koldyke) -- a quick-witted and likable family man who used to be a top car salesman until he got laid off -- and Angel Ortiz (Amaury Nolasco) -- a single, hot-headed ladies’ man with no filter -- who quickly learn there are fundamental differences in the worlds of men and women that go beyond teetering in high heels and tightening up with Spanx. Lee and Angel are determined to keep their ruse going for as long as they can -- and keep their newly found jobs — in this smart, funny and relevant look at male and female relationships at work, at home and socially. Being a better man sometimes means having to be a better woman.

Though they instantly clashed, sparks of another sort began to fly, leading both to danger and a hint of romance as Castle stepped in to help find the copycat killer. Once that initial case was solved, Castle and Beckett continued to investigate strange homicides in New York, combining Castle’s writer intuition and Beckett’s creative detective work.
Now after three seasons, Castle and Beckett’s relationship has grown even stronger as they’ve dodged bullets, captured killers, and solved countless murder cases due to their unorthodox partnership. But in the explosive Season 3 finale, which saw the killing of NYPD Captain Roy Montgomery – who was revealed to have a connection to the unsolved murder of Beckett’s mother -- Castle witnessed the shooting of Beckett and, as she lay on the ground with life fading out of her, it’s unknown if she’ll survive...

mtlguy 05-17-2011, 02:09 AM I like it, but I would be shocked if they moved Grey's Anatomy. It would be a great move tough as Grey's 2 hours episodes always showed good ratings at 10pm. That would leave a lot of big shows for midseason. Can't wait to know for sure the schedule.

I think the problem is Grey's has never launched another hit show really. PP was kind of one for awhile, but it also had a previous star of Grey's, so...
I hope they do move it but like you I won't believe it til I see it. Charlie's Angels has so much more potential at 9pm than 10, and I LOVE Castle leading off the night...
70s show watcher 05-17-2011, 05:20 AM im glad that they moved cougar town because now i dont have to decide between it and harrys law

Mr. Television 05-17-2011, 09:10 AM This is a much better lineup than last year. I think they would have been better moving Castle to Wednesdays at 10 and replacing it with a new show but I understand why they didn't. Private Practice should have been moved though. ABC does have some pretty interesting new shows. I'll probably check out Pan Am, Once Upon a Time, Last Man Standing and Revenge.
icecream 05-17-2011, 10:58 AM Besides The Middle and Castle, I'm interested the most in Subergatory, Last Man Standing, and Once Upon a Time. And I'm really glad the awful Work It didn't get paired with Last Man Standing. Subergatory should fit like a glove with The Middle. And kudos to ABC for putting an interesting scripted show Sundays at 8:00, I really didn't think they would take Secret Millionaire off. I might also try Man Up, Revenge, and Charlie's Angels. The odds are really against Revenge hitting though. I had wanted Castle to move but am glad it stayed as it will now kill Playboy.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Private Practice air in a fall/spring pattern with no repeats. More than likely, Scandal filling the slot in mid-season.

Work It looks like the worst show ever made.
yankeesrj12 05-17-2011, 03:35 PM Work It looks like the worst show ever made.
Work It actually looks kind of good. As for the other ABC shows (excluding Last Man Standing, The River, and Suburgatory) they look AWFUL.
Brent88 05-17-2011, 03:43 PM Pretty solid schedule IMO, much better than NBC's and more interesting than FOX's. It's not all good, but it is a start.
Castle not moving surprises me a lot, they really need it to shore up another night and launch a new hit at 10... but on the flip side they will continue to dominate Mondays.
I like the idea of comedies on Tuesday but I'd put them after DWTS at 9... however, Tim Allen should bring the star power to self-start. BOP is acceptable for 10pm.
Wednesdays... 8-9:30 was totally predictable but I am very surprised about 9:30-11. Happy Endings getting the most prized sitcom lead-in on ABC is very interesting, this will be a huge test if it has legs or not(I am not sold). Revenge at 10pm is bizarre... and on paper sounds like a disaster as it has less than zero flow with the comedies, but it does look different than what they tried last year in the slot, and it will be totally different from CBS/NBC, so it might have a shot with some creative marketing.
Thursdays was my biggest surprise... Charlie's Angels at 8 is good but I am shocked PP is staying after Grey's. This was a golden opportunity to improve that slot and they didn't take it. Hopefully at midseason they will try a new show there.
Fridays... EM: HE will be huge on this night IMO, it's perfect, and Shark Tank will do okay business. Solid night considering it's cheap and not scripted like the other networks.
Sundays... FINALLY! About 3 years later than it should have changed, it changed. Once Upon a Time looks very interesting and 8pm is a perfect slot for it. I am not totally sold on DH/Pan Am's pairing as DH has sunk so low now... but if 8pm can be shored up it may help the rest of the night. On the other hand... if it bombs, the whole night is in trouble. But I do think this is a good decision to change a sinking for years lineup. Either way, this night is gonna need a LOT of promotion.
Overall, very good schedule. Not as good as I hoped, but I figured they wouldn't really move their tentpoles(DH and Grey's), and ABC has a LOT of midseason shows with potential, so I think they will have a much better year than this year

Pavan 05-17-2011, 07:30 PM Good schedule and shows. Brent, that leaked schedule was very fake. I never saw that anywhere. Who "leaked? it? I didn't have anything last night. ABC was tight-lipped.
Pavan 05-17-2011, 08:14 PM Upfront presentation was great. Recap to follow later tonight.

"ABC Insider" over at Zap2it. In past years they had been pretty good... Oh well, life goes on.

Family Ties Forever! 05-18-2011, 07:36 PM That's good that Private Practice is staying in the same day and time slot (Thursdays' at 10pm/9pm central). I think it would hurt the show to move it to Fridays.
Brent88 05-19-2011, 12:48 AM Hey Pavan, are there any fall promos coming up during the season finales? I saw the Charlie's Angels one during DH Sunday but was hoping to see others.

DreamWorks' half-hour animated special features the Shrek characters putting their own spin on holiday traditions. And "like the movie sequels, Shrek the Halls keeps the gags flying..." "...for a made-for-TV version of a theatrical blockbuster, it looks utterly polished..." – Variety (Nov. 27, 2007)

Charlie Brown Specials
This season, ABC will again air special animated Peanuts programs. Each has a personality as unique as the notable characters created by award-winning cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. These engaging family favorites, based on Shultz' classic syndicated comic strip that began in the 1950s, impart worthwhile lessons while engaging large young audiences.
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
October, 2011
One Hour with Bonus Special
There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin. – Linus
In this Emmy-nominated Peanuts classic, Charlie Brown's security blanket-toting best friend Linus believes the Great Pumpkin rises out of the pumpkin patch on Halloween night and gives toys to all the good little children, just like Santa does at Christmastime. As Linus awaits the Great Pumpkin, the rest of the Peanuts gang go trick-or-treating, while Snoopy, dressed up as the famous World War I flying ace, focuses on shooting down the infamous Red Baron – from the top of his doghouse.
ALSO: You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown
Linus runs for class president with Lucy and Charlie Brown managing his campaign. This bonus PEANUTS feature has Chad Webber as Charlie Brown, Robin Kohn as Lucy, Stephen Shea as Linus, Hilary Momberger as Sally and Todd Barbee as Russell.
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
November, 2011
One Hour with Bonus Special
There's no problem so big you can't run away from it. – Linus
It's Thanksgiving at Charlie Brown's House! The true meaning of Thanksgiving is at the heart of this special, as Snoopy, Woodstock, Peppermint Patty and the rest of the Peanuts gang celebrate the traditions of Thanksgiving Day in a non-traditional way: having dinner at the ping-pong table with toast, popcorn and desserts! Despite much turmoil, Thanksgiving ends happily for the group with Charlie Brown's grandmother.
ALSO: The Mayflower Voyagers
This PEANUTS feature originally aired as part of an eight-episode, animated mini-series called "This Is America, Charlie Brown," which had the Peanuts gang visiting important events in United States history. To help celebrate Thanksgiving, ABC brings viewers The Mayflower Voyagers to explore how the pilgrims came to America.
A Charlie Brown Christmas
December, 2011
1 Hour
Lights… That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown. – Linus
In the first-ever primetime animated TV special based upon the popular comic strip, the ever– unlucky Charlie Brown tries to do good by directing the Christmas school play. He tries to find a tree for the play and he chooses a pitiful little twig. At first the gang makes fun of Charlie for choosing such an ugly tree for the holiday but an assist from Linus makes the true message of the season come shining through. In the end, everyone realizes that a little affection can make all the difference in the world...even to a tree.
The popular TV special is considered a timeless holiday classic by millions of viewers. Its soundtrack by jazz composer Vince Guaraldi has become as well-known as the story itself, especially the piece entitled "Linus and Lucy," which has become seen as the signature musical theme to Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang.
I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown
December, 2011
1 Hour
Yesterday I was a dog. Today I'm a dog. Tomorrow I'll probably still be a dog. Sigh! There's so little hope for advancement. – Snoopy
Linus' younger brother Rerun wants a dog for Christmas and involves the Peanuts gang in his quest. Will his mom allow him to get one? Can he handle the responsibility of caring for a dog? Find out in this post-Charles Schulz Christmas special based on his timeless Peanuts characters.
Happy New Year, Charlie Brown!
December, 2011
One Hour with Bonus Special
"You know how I always dread the whole year? Well, this time I'm only going to dread one day at a time."– Charlie Brown
Charlie Brown is looking forward to Christmas vacation, until his teacher assigns the class to read "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy over the Christmas Holiday, and then write a book report on it. Things turn from bad to worse when Peppermint Patty calls to invite him to a New Year's party and Lucy enrolls their friends in a dance class, to learn how to dance properly.
ALSO: She's a Good Skate, Charlie Brown
In the first Peanuts special in which the adults actually speak words rather than be represented with the plunger-muted trombone sounds, Peppermint Patty spends hours at a frozen winter pond practicing skating routines, as Snoopy, her "skating coach," barks and snarls orders. When the tape containing her music breaks at the competition, Snoopy's little bird friend Woodstock saves the day when he steps up to the microphone and whistles a beautiful rendition of Puccini's "O Mio Babbino Caro."
Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Valentine
February, 2012
One-Hour
Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown: Hearts are fluttering on Valentine's Day at Birchwood School, and Linus has brought a huge box of candy for his homeroom teacher. Thinking that the candy is for her, Sally reciprocates with a homemade card for Linus. Lucy meanwhile, demands some affection from Schroeder, and Charlie Brown waits for his cards in the mail - and waits - and waits.
A Charlie Brown Valentine: Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love. – Charlie Brown
Love is in the air and Valentine's Day is a week away. Charlie Brown hopes to get a Valentine from the little red-haired girl, as does Sally from Linus...Lucy from Schroeder...and Peppermint Patty from Charlie Brown. The usual heartbreak with all these relationships comes to a head on Valentine's Day, ending with the ill-fated Valentine's Dance.
It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown
April, 2012
Half Hour
Some Easter Beagle! He gave me my own egg! – Lucy
Easter is fast approaching, and that means there is a lot to do for the "Peanuts" pals. Charlie, Sally, Lucy and Marcie try to get ready for the big day by making several unsuccessful – yet creative – attempts to prepare eggs for coloring: frying, waffle-ironing, toasting, roasting, and finally soup, while Linus insists there is no preparation necessary. Not to worry…. The Easter Beagle steps in to save the day!

Pavan 05-24-2011, 07:25 PM I began watching the picked-up pilots this weekend. So far I have watched these, but I'm not allowed to review them yet. So here are just some quick thoughts (I posted these on Twitter):
Last Man Standing: Rough cut of Tim Allen's #LastManStanding pilot is good. Nancy Travis not used much. Can't say more, not for review.
Charlie's Angels: #CharliesAngels pilot is fun and has a ton of action! @MinkaKelly is stunning! A nice mix of the original series and the movies.
Revenge: starring Emily VanCamp is Dynasty/Dallas style. High class primetime soap that is just purely addicting! I'm in for it! will suck you in. Very intriguing and you'll want to know what will happen next!
Pan Am: another great pilot. Next season is going to be truly quality TV. Pan Am was excellent. Great story and interesting premise!
More to come, as soon as I have some time to watch. But so far, 4 for 4.

tvcrazed 09-05-2011, 02:13 PM I don't understand why they are blowing two Modern Family reruns in the first week (since they only get three airings). They didn't do all that well last year on Fridays the first few weeks. Not more than a 1.0. Also why even give a few people incentive not to watch on Wednesday when there is a live show - X factor- that many will want to sample. If it's to give revenge encore a lead in, there are many other shows that will provide the same 1.0 lead in for that.

tvcrazed 09-09-2011, 01:03 PM That new 8 game NFL package for Thursdays that is going for bids soon - ABC needs to bid and negotiate to get in the running for a Super Bowl too. At the very least they need to outbid all others. Write the biggest check. They are the only broadcast network without the NFL presence and as has been proven lately, there is only one thing that still commands big live numbers and IS GROWING - the NFL.
Pavan 09-09-2011, 10:26 PM NFL Thursday package would be great. Especially in December.

Zedman2 10-06-2011, 08:09 PM Why would ABC waste Million Dollar Mind Game in the afternoon? And when did they order this show?
This was announced December 2009. From thefutoncritic.com:
THE SIX (ABC, New!) - Merv Griffin Entertainment has landed a presentation order from the Alphabet for a new game show based on the Russian format "What? Where? When?" Said project, which has been running for 35 years in its home country, is being redubbed "The Six," after the number of contestants on the show. The late Vladimir Voroshilov created (and hosted) the series, which pits a panel of six knowledgeable persons against the viewing audience. Said experts are tasked with answering audience-submitted questions listed on a spinning horizontal wheel divided into segments. If the experts answer correctly in the allotted 60 seconds they receive a point, if they don't the audience receives a point with question's author also earning a prize. (Sample question: "They first appeared in 1908 in Mexico. There were two of them. Over time, they came closer and closer together, like wings of a black raven. Name them." Answer: "Frida Kahlo's eyebrows.") Exact format details however are still being worked out. Merv Griffin's Roy Bank is executive producing the project alongside Ukranian-born actor Alex Reznik, Jonathan Barry and Ron Ward. Dwight Smith and Michael Agbabian are the showrunners with Brian Veskosky serving as a co-executive producer.

I find it strange, that knowing all the other shows surronding Modern Family had Halloween episodes being produced, ABC wouldn't have requested a new Halloween themed episode this year.

9:00pm - 11:00pm Dancing with the Stars: The Results Show (Season Finale)
Zedman2 10-24-2011, 11:54 AM Pavan, with the strong opening of Once Upon a Time, ABC should seriously consider re-airing the pilot episode next Sunday night, Oct 30, at 7pm lead-in to the second episode.
I'm sure there were alot of potential viewers that thought the show would probably arrive DOA due to the high concept, and though they may have been interested, didn't want to commit. With the great rating results, they may tune in if the pilot was re-aired.
If you have any contacts at ABC, you should suggest it to them.

The network should dump Charlie's Angels to Friday nights, and place encores of OUAT in its slot on Thursdays at 8pm. ABC will be rebuilding Sunday next year, and they need to make sure they have enough inventory that survives this season. I don't imagine them moving REVENGE (although they could), but I do expect Castle and 'Once' (if it remains high-rated and is renewed) to be the new 9 and 10pm shows. Pan-Am is dead, and the only other hope is that GCB is a hit.

Pavan 10-26-2011, 11:34 PM This will start before primetime? And is Dancing with the Stars still two hours that night as Tom kept mentioning during last night's Results show?
Tom said that it is a two-hour Halloween event starting at 8|7c. He is hosting the special before it starts live from the ballroom. So that's why it starts earlier, but Shrekless will actually end like 8:28pm.

Well I certainly don't agree with airing new episodes on Thanksgiving Eve, but it is sweeps and ABC gets a ton of money in advertising on that night (possibly because of the big spending weekend that follows). Ratings will be down, but it didn't matter last season as the comedies were fine in December and in January. I think Revenge has proven itself already that it has an audience and buzz so it should be fine after this night.
Also of note, ABC is really going to promote its "Home for the Holidays" programming, which will start that night (Nov. 23) with Thanksgiving episodes of The Middle and Suburgatory, and last through the end of December with Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.
Pavan 11-04-2011, 07:22 PM Update for week of Nov. 28-Dec. 2: Castle is a repeat; Last Man/Man Up/Body of Proof are new; Wed comedies are new, Revenge is a repeat; Home Makeover is new. The Middle is on its 11th half-hour on Nov. 30, but that one-hour episode for the premiere looks like is just one episode, so they have 25 half-hours I think.

ABC is having a nice fall with their new shows and they've made some really good moves after years of poor choices but they're starting to get silly again with their scheduling, a regular problem for them.
I know it's Sweeps but why air a new Revenge that night when a serialized show could be in the most trouble on a night like that. And then follow that with a REPEAT? That seems like it'll dull momentum for a show that has been growing nicely and I don't think it'll repeat well. They'd be better off airing a special of some sorts on Thanksgiving Eve and then a new episode after new comedies in the first week of Dec. I've come around to being fine with comedies airing on Thanksgiving Eve because they've proven they can rebound fine. Revenge, I'm not so sure.

I agree with you sentiment. The comedies probably won't get hurt as much, but Revenge will suffer. There is no reason to air a new episode on Thanksgiving Eve and to follow that up with a repeat episode the following week. This scheduling will hurt the show. Mark my words.
Cyrax 11-05-2011, 05:43 PM Update for week of Nov.
That's quite confusing, it's weird that BoP airs only every other week during sweeps. Good news about The Middle though, I was afraid more than one Suburgatory episode would get repeat lead-ins.
I'm happy to discover the ABC grid is back, if only to know the episode titles. ;)
No info whatsoever on the 8th episode of Charlie's Angels? A late December burn off on Saturday is plausible?
Pavan 11-05-2011, 07:18 PM No info on Charlie's Angels episode eight. Saturday is an option. Only one open right now is Christmas Eve, everything else is scheduled through Jan. 14.
Got word that Wednesday, Nov. 30 comedies could be all repeats, except Modern Family, but will confirm that early this coming week. Tuesdays at 9pm starting Nov. 29 will be TBA comedies. Repeats it seems, but more info to come. ABC will schedule movies The Santa Clause 3, The Game Plan, The Sound of Music, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory still. ABC also has another original movie in addition to Mitch Albom's Have Faith called The Borrowers, don't know much about this yet.

Pavan 11-12-2011, 03:52 PM Realistic prediction for ABC January/February 2012:
Mondays
8:00PM The Bachelor
10:00PM Castle
(No point in moving Castle when NBC will try and launch the promising Smash.)

Interesting... comedies on Thursday at 10pm. Would definitely work better/do the same as Tuesdays at 9, but it definitely wouldn't do worse. We'll see what happens...
mtlguy 11-13-2011, 12:28 AM Here's my take on ABC's midseason:
Mondays
8:00 The Bachelor / DWTS
10:00 Castle
No change expected and it works so why break it.
Tuesdays
8:00 Last Man Standing
8:30 Work It!
9:00 Winter Wipeout / The River / DWTS
10:00 Body of Proof / Missing
There is 11 Tuesdays before DWTS results comes back, so if The River takes 6 (with 2hrs premiere and finale) and 5 weeks for Winter Wipeout. I think there is 6 episodes of Winter Wipeout, since they have one before Christmas, that leave 5 for after.
Missing would work best with The River, but you want to give it the sure leadin of DWTS. And having 2 shows likes this could do what any shows that followed Lost suffered. Tuesdays would be repeat free from 9-11 all season with BoP having extra episodes from last year and the 10 episodes of Missing.
Wednesdays
8:00 The Middle
8:30 Suburgatory
9:00 Modern Family
9:30 Happy Endings
10:00 Revenge
With Happy Endings starting to show life, ABC will most likely keep it there all season, unless it derails completely.
Thursdays
8:00 Cougar Town
8:30 Don't Trust The B*tch in Apt.23
9:00 Grey's Anatomy
10:00 Private Practice / Scandal
CT and A23 are in no way going to suffer being against NBC comedies because they basically have no viewers and CBS comedies are very different and probably won't share viewers.
Scandal is a natural fit for the PP spot and has it's best chance of success here anyway. It has 7 episodes.
Fridays
8:00 Extreme Makeover: Home Edition / Secret Millionaire
9:00 Shark Tank (return) / Celebrity Wife Swap
10:00 20/20
Reality is cheap and it does decent for ABC here, so I see this as obvious choices.
Sundays
7:00 AFV
8:00 Once Upon a Time
9:00 Desperate Housewives
10:00 G.C.B. / Pan Am
GCB has 10 episodes, it could come and take Pan Am's slot for its run. If it's big, order more and burn Pan Am somewhere else or have it instead of DH repeats. If it doesn't work, bring back Pan Am which should receive a few more episode order, maybe 5 more to make it 18.
To me this sounds like the most realistic midseason ABC schedule. Yes I would slide both DH and GA to 10pm, but it's not going to happen.
GA is still king after you add in the DVR and DH deserves to stay where it is to end it's run.
DH was the first of the 3 big shows that saved ABC when it premiered and probably helped Lost start so big a few days later and then launched GA in the spring. Without DH, who knows if Lost and GA would have been so big. It should stay at 9pm even if a move to 10pm would be logical if it wasn't the last season.

Oh right, I forgot. No one can be as good as ABC...
Not to mention that hottest is subjective. ABC has a very successful lineup on Wednesday but the most successful lineup on TV is CBS Wednesday where every show is up year to year and they all outrank their ABC Wednesday counterparts in the time period except for Two and a Half Men vs. Modern Family
It's just your rose colored ABC glasses again :)
ryan423 11-13-2011, 03:05 PM It's a good show, but I don't think anybody thinks 'hot' when they think about 'The Middle,' haha! Same goes for 'Mike and Molly' on CBS Monday nights...

Geez, you're really obsessed with what I post? I made no knock on CBS Monday at all. All I said was ABC Wednesday is hot. CBS Monday is clearly the higher rated block, but ABC Wednesday has gone up nearly each week. It's hot (and growing. ryan: The Middle has hit series highs a few times already this season). That's all I said.
Du Mont 11-13-2011, 10:55 PM Realistic prediction for ABC January/February 2012:
Saturdays
8:00PM ABC Saturday Movie of the Week
Pavan, do you have any inside scoop on which features or made-fors that the Alphabet has squirreled away for use in the 'ABC Saturday Movie of the Week'.
I know they still have a number of titles left over from their 2010-11 season, namely FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS, FLUSHED AWAY, MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA and MUNICH.
icecream 11-13-2011, 11:40 PM Once Upon a Time is the best new show that has premiered in several years. :D I just wish it was preempted in two weeks instead of next week.
If ABC really thinks The River is the next Lost they should start it at 8PM like Lost did. That would mean Thursday since Sunday-Wednesday are booked.

I don't know yet, no list was given this year. All I know are the titles they have booked for the holiday season: Shrek the Third, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Chronicles of Narnia and The Santa Clause 3. They have this original movie called The Borrowers and of course the Titanic mini-series in April, but those are likely for a Sunday or so like Mitch Albom's Have A Little Faith. They have some encores of movies they premiered already like Game Plan and Pirates of the Caribbean though.
yankeesrj12 11-14-2011, 01:49 AM I completely forgot about the Titanic Mini-Series! I'm really looking forward to the April 2012 premiere, so hopefully ABC gives it a good timeslot. :)

8:00-10:00 p.m. “Dancing with the Stars” (Season Premiere)
Tuesday, March 27
9:00-10:00 p.m. “Dancing with the Stars the Results Show” (Season Premiere)
Premiere dates for “Cougar Town,” “Don't Trust the B---- In Apartment 23,” “Scandal,” “Primetime: What Would You Do?” and “Secret Millionaire” will be announced at a later date.
Also of note, Pan Am gets an extra episode (now 14 episodes) and Body of Proof gets 3 more episodes (now 20 episodes).
tvcrazed 11-18-2011, 07:59 PM Would not be shocked to see ABC finish Pan Am before Feb Sweeps. 5 eps could air over 4 weeks (2 hr finale). Either they could stunt the 10p hour for the 2 Sun Feb Weeks Or I could see them airing movies on those two Feb weeks especially against big comp. Maybe The Titanic mini over the 2 Feb Sundays. This way DH will be mostly original from Mar-May (if they air 3 eps in Jan and have 24 eps and 2 hr finale 3rd Sunday in May, they are original all the way, If 23 eps, one week off)
Pavan 11-18-2011, 08:49 PM I think they will air Titanic in April? It'll be hard to schedule it on back-to-back nights or two days later with Dancing in the mix. I think they will do 8-10pm or something for two Sundays in April (that way they can rest both Once and Desperate and air GCB still) -- like April 8 and 15 (April 8 is Easter).
Guessing Pan Am through Feb. 19, but I could see them finishing up Jan. 29, just don't think they will do it. Just a hunch since it is sweeps and there is no way Desperate Housewives doesn't air Feb. 12 and Feb. 19. So for DH: Eps 10, 11, and 12 in January (Jan. 8-22). 13 and 14 in February (Feb. 12-19). 15, 16 and 17 in March (March 4-18). 18, 19, and 20 in April (April 1, 22-29). 21, 22 and 23 in May (May 6-13). No repeats at all except for last week of January.
As for the unscheduled series so far, guessing WWYD will take over for Home Makeover at 9pm in March. Scandal after Body of Proof's season is over at the end of March (in time for the return of DWTS: The Results). And the comedies Apt. 23/Cougar Town will likely either air Wednesdays within the comedy block or Thursdays at 10 (having Private wrap and repeat free until end of March?). I also think after Work It concludes its 13 episode run, we could see Kirstie Alley's The Manzanis on March 27, if the pilot is picked-up to series, so no chance I think of Cougar Town/Apt. 23 on Tuesdays. It'll be Wednesdays or Thursdays. Maybe Apt. 23 will air for 6 weeks in lieu of Revenge repeats Wednesdays at 10 and then Cougar Town for 7 or 8 weeks on Thursdays at 10?
Not sure about Secret Millionaire, but it is scheduled to come in spring.
icecream 11-19-2011, 12:11 AM ABC really should return The Ten Commandments to Easter Sunday.
Mr. Television 11-19-2011, 11:16 AM ABC really should return The Ten Commandments to Easter Sunday.
I agree. Nobody wants to watch regular shows on Easter Sunday.
Pavan 11-19-2011, 09:07 PM This is what I think they will do in Mar-May for the unscheduled series:
Apartment 23: Possibly launch it on Wednesday, Feb. 29 after Modern Family at 9:30pm. Then air for 6 weeks from 10-11pm giving Revenge a hiatus (March 7-April 11) so it can air repeat free. Revenge will probably get 24 episodes, so the final 6 of the season will air April 18-May 23.
Cougar Town: Could launch sometime in March (like March 29) on Thursdays at 10pm for 7 weeks. Season premiere could be maybe after Modern Family (like March 28) then the next night it premieres 10-11pm after Grey's (until May 10). Private Practice will finish most of its episodes by end of March, and it could air at 9pm for a few weeks in spring displacing Grey's repeats for a while.
Scandal: This is an easier decision. As soon as Body of Proof concludes its 20 episode season, Scandal could air the last 7 weeks of season on Tuesday at 10pm after DWTS: The Results.
What Would You Do: Fridays at 9pm starting in March, if Home Edition finishes up. Shark Tank is going to be from Feb-May with repeats in there I think. It does well even in repeats. Shark Tank has 13 episodes, with Mark Cuban in 10 of them! WWYD always does decently.
Secret Millionaire: Not sure at all. The schedule is pretty tight already. Don't think ABC will use it to give Once Upon a Time a break either. Once will probably get only a two-week break for the Titanic movie in April. Millionaire could be used in late season into summer?
Tuesday at 8:30: Not going to be Cougar Town. So don't believe the speculation. When Work It finishes up and if it lasts its full 13 episodes, I expect ABC will pick-up the Kirstie Alley (multi-camera) sitcom pilot and order it to series and air it after Tim Allen's Last Man Standing starting March 27. I expect anywhere between 6-9 episodes.
mtlguy 11-19-2011, 10:49 PM Scandal: This is an easier decision. As soon as Body of Proof concludes its 22 (Jeri Ryan says it is 22, not 20) episode season
Actually she retracted herself about that after. She said it was 20 and not 22.
Pavan 11-19-2011, 11:02 PM Actually she retracted herself about that after. She said it was 20 and not 22.
That works better then. It will last through 3/13 (with one preemption for The State of the Union) and The River gets a two-hour finale on 3/20.
yankeesrj12 11-20-2011, 04:00 PM Tuesday at 8:30: Not going to be Cougar Town. So don't believe the speculation. Why would ABC pick up another comedy this season? They simply don't have the space, and I expect them to wait until next season to order the series, if they even decide to pick it up.
Pavan 11-20-2011, 06:16 PM They are shooting it off-cycle in December. Why else would they do that if they don't want another comedy? Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley would be great back-to-back.

I had no idea they were shooting in December. When was it ordered to series?!
Pavan 11-20-2011, 08:25 PM It's not ordered to series...yet. They are taping the pilot in December. If they like it, they will order to series and air it this season.
icecream 11-22-2011, 01:57 PM If ABC wanted new programming on Thanksgiving Eve they should have put the Gabrielle Giffords and lady gag gag specials there. Continuing to waste new episodes of their regular shows is just stupid, for The Middle anyway they won't even repeat the Thanksgiving episodes as much as the other ones.
Pavan 11-22-2011, 08:30 PM They know that. It is sweeps and they get a lot of ad money for their regular series, especially with the big holiday season starting. Only big time specials like CMA would get more. The Giffords interview and the Gaga interview special would get nothing (plus the Giffords interview was timed for the book release on that Tuesday). The only thing in the business that is more important than ratings is money.
Zedman2 11-22-2011, 08:45 PM If ABC wanted new programming on Thanksgiving Eve they should have put the Gabrielle Giffords and lady gag gag specials there. Ratings won't count in each series seasonal averages as each program will be marked as 'special' due to the holiday.
Zedman2 11-24-2011, 01:07 PM via press release:
Winning the final 2 nights of the 2011 November Sweep, ABC posted a strong first-place finish on Wednesday night, beating out its nearest competition by 10% in Total Viewers (CBS) and by 35% in Adults 18-49 (35%). In fact, ABC claimed the Top 2 most-watched TV shows of the evening with Modern Family and The Middle, as both shows outdrew Fox’s The X Factor Results Show and lead-out Mobbed. The Net claimed the Top 4 shows on Wednesday in Adults 18-49, with Modern Family, Happy Endings, The Middle and Suburgatory, respectively – the latter two shows tied The X Factor.
Building sharply over the year-ago night (also an all-original lineup) among Total Viewers (+16%) and Adults 18-49 (+17%), ABC marked its highest numbers in on the night before Thanksgiving in 6 years - since 2005.
Please note: On the night before Thanksgiving, all ABC programming will be coded as special.
At 8pm, ABC’s The Middle won its time period in viewers and young adults, beating out original competition on CBS (Survivor), NBC (Up All Night) and Fox(The X Factor Results Show).
For its 9th straight telecast this season, The Middle grew over its year-ago performance with Adults 18-49 (+14%).
Holding 100% of its lead-in at 8:30pm, ABC’s Suburgatory finished a strong second in its slot in Adults 18-49 to the second half-hour of The X Factor, and beat out the Fox unscripted series with Teens 12-17.
For the new ABC comedy’s 8th time in as many airings, Suburgatory generated strong improvement for the Net over the year-ago comedy (Better With You) in the half-hour with viewers (+20%) and young adults (+32%).
Building on its lead-in at 9pm to win its time slot by huge margins over its nearest competition, ABC’s Modern Family soared to the top of the night asWednesday’s #1 TV program in viewers and young adults. In fact the ABC comedy stood as Wednesday’s #1 TV show with Adults 18-49 for the 9th straight airing this season.
Topping its year-ago telecast on each original airing this season, the Modern Family surged year to year by 2.0 million viewers and by 22% in Adults 18-49.
During the 9:30pm half-hour, ABC’s Happy Endings dominated its slot by 42% among Adults 18-49 over its nearest competition (CBS) and nearly doubled the delivery of Fox’s original Mobbed (+93%). Winning its the time period, the ABC sophomore comedy registered as the #1 scripted series in its slot for its 8th broadcast with Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34.
ABC’s Happy Endings improved its slot over the year-ago night with viewers (+9%) and young adults (+13%).
From 10-11pm, ABC freshman drama Revenge ranked #1 for its 4th straight broadcast in Adults 18-49. In addition, Revenge was the highest-rated series in the hour for its 9th consecutive telecast with Women 18-34.
The new series continued to deliver solid year-to-year growth for ABC in the hour, jumping over the year-ago night with an original Sweep special by 1.3 million viewers and by 17% in Adults 18-49.
Pavan 11-24-2011, 03:14 PM All things considered, that was a very good performance by the ABC line-up. Like last year, it won't affect them in December/January.

10:00pm Celebrity Wife Swap (premiere, special night & time)
[Castle is preempted and will return with new episodes starting the following week on 1/9/12.]
Now all 6 episodes of Celebrity Wife Swap are scheduled. Previously only 5 were scheduled (Jan. 3-31).
tvcrazed 12-11-2011, 10:04 AM I am aware that ABC Wed is penciled in to return Jan 4th (though maybe they are considering delaying Revenge a week, as the promo didnt have a return date like DH and Pan AM had, although probably not). I think Revenge in particular (even more than the comedies) suffers with many breaks. It's a serialized show. It built up to a 3.0 the week before the CMA break and obviously since then it had breaks or Thanksgiving. Plus a show like Revenge that is so heavily serialized does best when scheduled consecutively. Here's my thoughts on how ABC might sked Wed for Jan/Feb to aleviate this:
Jan 4th- reruns of ABC Wed.
Jan 11th - The comedies are new. All new Revenge catch up special. Maybe one or more of the stars host it. Give some behind the scenes scoop so it has a new hook for fans of show already
Jan 18th- comedies new - Revenge returns ep 11
Jan 25th - comedies new - Revenge ep 12
Feb 1st - night before sweeps, comedies reruns; New Revenge ep 13
Feb 8th- Feb 29th - ABC new every week as is sweeps
This way the comedies and Revenge air their eps 11-17 thru end of sweeps. The comedies only have a one week break before sweeps. Revenge after a recap
special airs 6 new eps in a row, no breaks. Then ABC can use 10p slot for something else for 6 weeks and then Revenge can return for its final 6-7 eps in a row starting a few weeks before May sweeps begin thru the end of May Sweeps.
I know this will likely not happen. It's just what I think would work best for the shows, and the night.

Personally, I don't understand why anyone would be offended with the word in the title. I'm more concerned with Good Christian Bitches becoming GCB. How the hell is that generic title to be marketed or give viewers any idea of what the show is about.

Good Christian Bitches was the best title in the pilot season, it's too bad ABC buckled under pressure with that. I don't think it matters as much for Apartment 23. If anything a title like "Don't Trust the Bitch in Apartment 23" might box the show in too much (like Cougar Town)

Cyrax 01-30-2012, 03:53 PM Any info on Sunday specials in the Spring? If I'm not wrong, GCB has 10 episodes and there will be 12 Sundays, I'd assume the finale of DH is a 2-hour episode, so GCB is supposed to air with only 1 week off?
Pavan 01-30-2012, 08:19 PM No info yet, but Desperate Housewives is likely having its finale on May 13 (probably an all-night event with a retrospective leading-in, like LOST had, I'm guessing). So perhaps GCB will get a two-hour episode sometime in April so DH doesn't repeat, that way the GCB finale can air May 6.

This 20/20 should have aired in Wipeout's slot instead, that show is really overexposed. And if Desperate Housewives has its finale on May 13, will Once Upon a Time have a 2 hour finale on the 20th? That would be really good and maybe it could even beat the Survivor finale.

Revenge has 22 episodes and doesn't repeat well. So it makes sense to preempt that over Wipeout. And Wipeout is over March 8.

Not a bit too soon? Same goes for 'Revenge'. I think they need to leave these two alone for another season in their respective slots. I'd only suggest moving OUAT if it meant giving the show the post-Grey's slot. It certainly shouldn't be moved to 8pm Thursdays, but I'm sure that's not what you were suggesting. We'll have a better idea of how they want to tackle Sundays once we have numbers for GCB, which I think should have been put on at 9pm behind OUTA, sliding DH to 10. No one is watching DH like they used to despite it being in its final season, so give your new show the plum slot. I don't understand that move...

I agree that Revenge and Once Upon a Time should stay where they are...at least for now. Let's see how ABC fixes other problems, and if they don't need to move, then they won't have to. If ABC can't fix other timeslots (like Thursdays at 8pm, for example) then they can try Once Upon a Time there. For now though, I would leave it as it is.
Zedman2 02-20-2012, 10:29 PM If ABC wants to be bold they should move Once Upon a Time to Thursdays in the fall like they did with Grey's Anatomy a few years ago.
When Grey's made the move it was already an established hit show. Was it not out delivering the lead-in Desperate Housewives by that point? In addition, ABC used the Super Bowl as part of the move. They'll never have that opportunity again.

Seriously? I thought it was a funny satire (more of which is needed on tv today). Personaly, I thought the title alone would stop viewers from turning in. After all, what the hell is GCB. I've watched at least four shows this week, including this one, where the charcters can say the word 'bitches' within the show but I guess you just can't have the word appear in the title of a program.
Who knows, if others have you attitude, this may turn into a big hit afterall. Here's hoping. :)

All the promo in the world does not get past the point that the title "GCB" doesn't convey any sense of what the program is or is trying to be. A generic title=a generic show, is what is in viewers minds. Unless this does a "Pan Am" collapse, this will probably still be renewed for fall with ABC citing high DVR numbers as the reason.

ABC rides the 'Modern' era
DVR viewing has pumped the already successful comedy
For ABC's "Modern Family," the third season has been the charm.
Already a two-time Emmy winner for best comedy and an advertiser's dream because of its very upscale audience skew, the 20th Century Fox TV laffer continues to grow in the ratings and recently shot to the top of the rankings among adults under 50 for the first time -- with a big assist from the DVR.
When Nielsen's full-week DVR playback numbers for the last week of February came in on Monday, the ABC comedy had leapfrogged several other shows that ranked ahead of it in the same-night results released a couple of weeks earlier. It actually achieved the feat in all four weeks of the sweep month, beating out heavyweights like "The Voice," "American Idol" and "The Big Bang Theory."
"Modern Family" has been the leader in DVR playback for a while now, but this season its delayed-viewing numbers have exploded. Its original episodes have averaged a 5.4 rating in adults 18-49 and 12.8 million viewers on Wednesday nights, but a full-week's worth of DVR playback has boosted those numbers by 2.5 demo points and 4.9 million viewers overall (to 7.9 and 17.7 million); a year ago at this time, the average "Modern" seg added 1.6 demo points and 3.2 million viewers overall from same-night to full-week.
As an example of how that has improved the show's final standings in a given week (as well as its season averages), consider the last Wednesday of the February sweep: "Modern Family" averaged a 4.8 same-night rating in adults 18-49, placing it fifth for the week, behind NBC's "The Voice" and three editions of Fox's "American Idol." But because it gained 2.7 points from same-night to full-week DVR playback, "Modern Family" jumped to a 7.5 in the final nationals -- ahead of "Voice" (up 1.2 to 6.6) and "Idol" (whose Thursday episode went up 1.0 to 6.4).
"The DVR is the programmer's best friend, and it has really helped ABC in the case of 'Modern Family' and its final ratings," says Larry Hyams, ABC's VP of primetime audience analysis.
DVR playback doesn't necessarily equate with advertising revenue, which is based on viewership of commercials within three days of a broadcast. But Hyams points out that typically more than 93% of a show's final "live plus same-day" audience is achieved either same-night or within that first three-day window that counts against advertising sales.
In Nielsen's current national household sample, roughly 43% are wired with digital video recorders, up from 40% a year ago. But it's closer to 50% in homes with incomes of $100,000 or more -- another category in which the ABC comedy is primetime's top-rated show.
"There is a skew toward DVR ownership being a little more affluent … to a certain degree, they go hand in hand," Hyams said of "Modern's" increased ratings and increased upscale skew this season.
Another factor in the ratings surge for "Modern Family" is a change in Nielsen methodology beginning halfway through last season allowing multiple viewings of a show to count toward its ratings.
While that may not figure to be a huge help, it can be when members of the same household are watching a show at different times. And with its multigenerational appeal and popularity with upscale adults who may be more likely to have more DVRs in the home, "Modern Family" is a natural beneficiary.
Just how well is "Modern Family" faring in upscale homes? Through March 4, it's the top-rated show among viewers in $100K-plus homes (10.4 rating), ahead of NBC's "The Voice" (8.9), Fox's "American Idol" on Wednesday (7.6) and Thursday (7.2) as well as CBS' "The Big Bang Theory" (6.6).
And ABC's Wednesday overall was the top-rated entertainment lineup on broadcast television (5.1 rating), getting solid support from "The Middle" (3.4), "Suburgatory" (3.6), "Happy Endings" (4.5) and rookie drama "Revenge" (4.2).
ABC's Wednesday is also the No. 2 night this season in terms of upscale index, drawing 45% higher ratings than the norm among high-income young adults (index of 145) -- up from 131 last year. The only night that indexes higher among the wealthy is NBC's modestly rated Thursday (158).
But when a show like "Modern Family" can combine robust ratings with a significant upscale skew, it's time to back up the Brink's truck.

9:00-11:00PM Sunset Boulevard - A Special Edition of 20/20
SUNSET BLVD is the most dangerous dream machine in America. A 22 mile stretch of Rock and Romance running from the rough side of town through “The Strip” and Beverly Hills…out to the Pacific. For 100 years, the wildly talented and tragically desperate have come to this neon-washed piece of real estate to “make it.” Very few ever do.
This two hour ABC Special is going to take the audience directly into the lives of these Dreamers and watch as Sunset Boulevard Chooses To Either Anoint Them… or Destroy Them.
mtlguy 03-29-2012, 09:50 PM Pavan, with Happy Endings having 1 more episode to air after April 4th, you think they will have it on May 23rd at 8:30? Or earlier on instead of a repeat of another comedy?
Pavan, I haven't heard from you on this earlier post. Does Happy Ending has only 21 episodes? Unless I am mistaken, next week's episode is 21.
Like I mentioned, there is a free spot on May 23rd at 8:30? Any info on that?
Pavan 03-29-2012, 11:12 PM They'll hold it for next season. It's renewed.
lacczko 03-30-2012, 11:16 AM What's up with the remake of Mistresses? I read that, they are shooting the first season, not only the pilot. Is it ordered for the full first season for this summer, or fall?

It's renewed, is this official? GREAT NEWS. I expected it, but always good to be confirmed.

10 episodes ordered for next season. It was ordered right to series. If it turns out really good, you'll see it in the fall. ABC can use it in fall, spring 2013 or summer 2013. Alyssa Milano stars, so that is a must see.

Not 100% until the ABC press release, but I'm 99.99% sure it has been given one.

Cyrax 03-31-2012, 03:54 AM ^Why another preemption of Last Man Standing/Cougar Town? There won't be room to air all the episodes if the finales are still May 1st and 15th!
Pavan 03-31-2012, 12:40 PM Last Man has room. There was a repeat scheduled for April 10, now it is new on April 10 since April 3 is preempted. So no more repeats until its finale on May 1 now. Cougar Town will need one more, perhaps a special Wednesday airing. Options are: April 18 at 8 when Middle is a repeat, April 25 when 8-930 is a repeats, or May 23 at 8:30pm.

TRUST US WITH YOUR LIFE - PREMIERES TUESDAY, JULY 10 (9:00-10:00 p.m.) From the creators of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" and "Mock the Week," "Trust Us With Your Life" is a brand new studio-based improvisation series that redefines both the chat show and television improv formats. Hosted by Fred Willard ("Best in Show," "Modern Family"), featured celebrities include David Hasselhoff, Ricky Gervais, Jerry Springer, Florence Henderson, Jack & Kelly Osbourne, Jane Seymour, Serena Williams and Mark Cuban. The exciting new format finds each celebrity reminiscing about key episodes that have happened in their lives, then brilliant improvisers acting out those moments which the celebrity has just described. These key moments in the life of the guest celebrity will be improvised as straight comedy or in game formats such as forward/rewind and sideways scenes. The tone of the show is friendly, funny and cheeky. Comedians on the show include Wayne Brady and Colin Mochrie ("Whose Line Is It Anyway?"), along with Jonathan Mangum ("Fast and Loose") as the main improvisers. They will be joined by guest starring performers such as Greg Proops and Nicole Parker. Eight episodes were shot in London for ABC. "Trust Us With Your Life" is produced by Angst Productions. Dan Patterson ("Whose Line Is It Anyway?") is executive producer.
FINAL WITNESS - PREMIERES TUESDAY, JULY 10 (10:00-11:00 p.m.) What if a murder victim could tell you about their final moments? The voices of the dead come to life in this true-crime series which offers a unique look at some of the nation's most shocking murders. Each of the seven episodes will examine one case from start to finish, taking viewers inside the murder from the victim's point of view. "Final Witness" is a compelling hybrid of documentary and drama, featuring interviews with real-life witnesses, prosecutors, law enforcement, family and friends, along with riveting scripted scenes with actors, thrusting viewers into the heart of each crime. Shot around the world at the actual locations, infused with an indie-band soundtrack and told like a feature film, "Final Witness" creates an unforgettable look at the human psyche at its darkest. The series is produced for ABC by Lincoln Square Productions. Executive producers are Rudy Bednar and Christine Connor.
icecream 04-06-2012, 02:53 PM Once Upon a Time had better repeat somewhere in the summer, it's ABC's highest rated drama after all. I've missed a few episodes and had thought it might keep its slot in the summer. Enough reality crap! 2 hour Weight Loss Editions are not needed, this isn't NBC. And if Shark Tank and Primetime repeat on Fridays yet Once is kept off the air that's just plain stupid. If reality must air in its slot at 8:00 how about taking AFV off for the summer and airing OUAT at 7:00?

The networks make mistakes by not airing reruns in the summer. that's where I used to catch up on shows that I missed or tried out new shows. Now I just don't bother watching any network shows in the summer. It's mostly reality crap.
Pavan 04-07-2012, 08:40 PM Summer repeats do nothing anymore because of so many options on cable. The networks have original programming in summer now. There are scripted options, too, like the awesome Rookie Blue. The ratings for repeats would be pretty bad besides a few series (mostly crime dramas and broad appealing comedies like Big Bang and Modern Family, not stuff like 30 Rock).
Schedule change:
Monday, April 9, 2012
10:00pm Scandal (R, pilot encore)
[Castle was a scheduled repeat.]
