NEW YORK CITY -- May 15, 2011 -- NBC has introduced its 2011-12 primetime schedule, showcasing six new dramas and six new comedies from a roster of renowned hit-makers that includes Steven Spielberg, Lorne Michaels, Brian Grazer, Tom Werner, John Grisham and Peter Berg, among many others.

The season's new dramas are "Smash," "Prime Suspect," "The Playboy Club," "Awake," "Grimm" and "The Firm"; and the new comedies are "Up All Night," "Whitney," "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Free Agents," "Best Friends Forever" and "Bent."

Returning shows include "Parenthood," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Harry's Law," "Chuck" (for its fifth and final season of 13 episodes), "Community," "Parks and Recreation," "The Office," "30 Rock" and "Dateline NBC." Among next season's returning alternative series are "The Voice," "The Sing-Off," "The Celebrity Apprentice" and "The Biggest Loser," each in two-hour formats.

The new lineup combines schedule stability with strategic changes that position the network for future growth. Key facets of the schedule include a new hour of comedy with the Wednesday debuts of "Up All Night" (8-8:30 p.m. ET) and "Free Agents" (8:30-9 p.m. ET) and an update to NBC's critically acclaimed Thursday lineup with the premieres this fall of the new comedy "Whitney" (9:30-10 p.m. ET) and the first-year drama "Prime Suspect" (10-11 p.m. ET). In addition, NBC has made a strong commitment to original scripted programming on Friday nights with the pairing of "Chuck" (8-9 p.m. ET) in its climactic season with the new drama "Grimm" (9-10 p.m. ET).

The #1 new series of the current season, "The Voice," returns at mid-season on Monday nights (8-10 p.m. ET) and will serve as the lead-in to the new musical drama "Smash" (10-11 p.m. ET). In the fall on Mondays from 8-10 p.m. ET will be another growing NBC reality success, "The Sing-Off," now in a weekly format following its strong December showings of the past two years.

Additional details unveiled in today's announcement include a run of uninterrupted originals for "30 Rock" starting at mid-season and a post-football Sunday lineup of "Dateline NBC" (7-8 p.m. ET), "The Celebrity Apprentice" (8-10 p.m. ET) and the new drama "The Firm" (10-11 p.m. ET). Additional new series ready for mid-season include the drama "Awake" and the comedies "Are You There, Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," "Best Friends Forever" and "Bent."

The announcements were made by Bob Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.

"Next season begins the rebuilding of the NBC primetime schedule, and our goal is to reinvigorate our audience with a line-up of appointment television that includes our best returning shows and a variety of innovative and attention-getting new series. We'll be placing a great deal of emphasis on how we launch each one of our programs and on maximizing the network's strengths throughout the fall and well into mid-season," said Greenblatt. "Considering it's only been three months since new management took over, I'm very pleased with what has resulted from a very strong pilot season. And with a powerful new asset like 'The Voice' already in hand, we go into the 2011-12 season with cautious but incredible optimism."

2011-12 NEW SERIES DESCRIPTIONS

New Dramas

'PRIME SUSPECT' -- Based on the critically acclaimed British television series of the same name, "Prime Suspect" has been redeveloped for American audiences by writer Alexandra Cunningham ("Desperate Housewives," "NYPD Blue"), director Peter Berg (NBC's "Friday Night Lights") -- and stars Maria Bello ("A History of Violence") as tough-as-nails Detective Jane Timoney. Timoney finds that being a homicide detective in New York City is tough enough and having to contend with a male-dominated police department to get respect makes it that much tougher. She's an outsider who has just transferred to a new precinct dominated by an impenetrable clique of a boys' club. Timoney has her own vices too -- with a questionable past -- and she tends to be forceful, rude and reckless. But she's also a brilliant cop who keeps her eye on one thing: the prime suspect. Also starring are Aidan Quinn ("Unknown"), Brian O'Byrne ("Flash Forward"), Tim Griffin ("Star Trek"), Kirk Acevedo ("Fringe"), Joe Nieves ("How I Met Your Mother"), Damon Gupton ("The Last Airbender") and Peter Gerety ("Blue Bloods"). "Prime Suspect" is produced by Universal Media Studios, ITV and Film 44. 'THE PLAYBOY CLUB' -- From Academy Award-winning executive producer Brian Grazer, "The Playboy Club" is a provocative new drama about a time and place that challenged the social mores, where a visionary entrepreneur created an empire and an icon changed American culture. It's the early '60s, and the legendary Playboy Club in Chicago is the door to all of your fantasies -- and the key is the most sought-after status symbol of its kind. Inside the seductive world of the bunny, the epitome of beauty and service, the clientele rubs shoulders with the decade's biggest mobsters, politicos and entertainers. Nick Dalton (Eddie Cibrian, "CSI: Miami") is one of the city's top attorneys and the ultimate playboy, rubbing elbows with everyone in the city's power structure. With mysterious ties to the mob, Nick comes to the aid of Maureen (Amber Heard, "Zombieland"), the stunning and innocent new bunny who accidentally kills the leader of the Bianchi crime family. Dating Nick is Carol-Lynne (Laura Benanti, "Take the Lead"), a bombshell and established star at the club who knows her days as a bunny are numbered and finds herself continually at odds with Billy (David Krumholtz, "Numb3rs"), the club's general manager. Adding to the charm of the Playboy club is Janie (Jenna Dewan Tatum, "American Virgin"), the carefree life of the party who is dating Max (Wes Ramsey, "CSI: Miami"), an overly protective bartender. 'SMASH' -- "Smash" is a musical drama that celebrates the beauty and heartbreak of the Broadway theater as it follows a cross-section of dreamers and schemers who all have one common desire -- to be a "Smash." The series centers on a desire to create a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe -- written by the successful songwriting duo of Tom (Tony Award nominee Christian Borle, "Legally Blonde: The Musical") and Julia (Emmy Award winner Debra Messing, "Will & Grace"). Julia recently began the process of adopting a child with her husband of many years, but her focus is torn when she has the opportunity to write another Broadway hit. A rivalry soon forms for the lead role between a youthful, inexperienced Midwestern beauty (Katharine McPhee, "American Idol") -- who is trying to find fame in the big city against all odds -- and stage veteran (Megan Hilty, "9 to 5: The Musical"), who's determined to leave the chorus line and finally get her big break. A tenacious producer Eileen (Oscar winner, Anjelica Huston, "Prizzi's Honor") discovers the "Marilyn" project and jumps on board with a brilliant director (Jack Davenport, "Pirates of the Caribbean" films) -- whose talent is matched by his cunning and egocentric amorality. The series stemmed from an idea of executive producer and multiple Emmy and Oscar winner Steven Spielberg ("ER," "Schindler's List"). The pilot was written by acclaimed playwright/screenwriter Theresa Rebeck ("Mauritius," "NYPD Blue"). Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Oscar-winning "Chicago," "Hairspray") and Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey ("United States of Tara," "The Borgias") will also serve as executive producers. Original songs are written by Tony and Grammy Award winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman ("Hairspray," "Catch Me If You Can"), who also serve as executive producers. "Smash" is a production of Universal Media Studios in association with DreamWorks. The pilot was directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer ("Spring Awakening," "American Idiot").

'GRIMM' -- "Grimm" is a new drama series inspired by the classic Grimm's Fairy Tales. Remember the fairy tales your parents used to tell you before bedtime? Those weren't stories -- they were warnings. Nick Burkhardt (David Guintoli "Turn The Beat Around") thought he prepared himself for the realities of working as a homicide detective until he started seeing things he couldn't quite explain. When his ailing Aunt Marie (guest star Kate Burton, "Grey's Anatomy") arrives, Nick's life turns upside down when she reveals they are descendants of an elite group of hunters, also known as "Grimms," who fight to keep the balance of humanity safe from the supernatural creatures of the world. As Nick digs deeper into her past, he realizes that he will have to shoulder the responsibility of his ancestors -- and contend with a larger-than-life mythology of the Brothers Grimm that is now all too real. Russell Hornsby ("Lincoln Heights"), Bitsie Tulloch ("Quarterlife"), Silas Weir Mitchell ("Prison Break"), Reggie Lee ("Persons Unknown") and Sasha Roiz ("Caprica") also star. "Grimm" is a production of Universal Media Studios and Hazy Mills Productions. Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner ("Hot in Cleveland") serve as executive producers, Jim Kouf ("National Treasure," "Angel") and David Greenwalt ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel") are the creators/executive producers and Marc Buckland ("My Name Is Earl") is the director.

'AWAKE' -- "Awake" is an intriguing drama about a detective (Jason Issacs, "Harry Potter," "Brotherhood") who finds he is leading an arduous double life that defies reality. When Detective Michael Britten (Issacs) regains consciousness following his family's car accident, he is told that his wife Hannah (Laura Allen, "Terriers") perished but that his teen son, Rex (Dylan Minnette, "Saving Grace"), has survived. As he tries to put the pieces of his life back together, he awakens again in a parallel reality in which his wife is very much alive -- but his son Rex died in the accident. In order to keep both of his loved ones alive at one time, he begins living two dueling realities in parallel worlds, which churns up confusion -- in one moment, Michael and his wife debate about having another child to replace their son, while in the other reality, he is attracted to his son's tennis coach, Tara (Michaela McManus, "The Vampire Diaries"), to fill the void from the loss of his wife. Trying to regain some normalcy, Michael returns to police work and solves crimes in both worlds with the help of two different partners -- Detective Isaiah "Bird" Freeman (Steve Harris, "The Practice") and Detective Efrem Vega (Wilmer Valderrama, "That '70s Show"). Also starring are Emmy Award winner Cherry Jones ("24") and BD Wong (NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit") as therapists in each respective world. The series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. Kyle Killen ("Lone Star") and Howard Gordon ("24") are executive producers. David Slade ("Twilight: Eclipse," "30 Days of Night") also serves as executive producer and directed the pilot written by Killen.

'THE FIRM' -- Based on the blockbuster feature film and best-selling novel by world-renowned author John Grisham ("The Pelican Brief," "The Client"), "The Firm" continues the story of attorney Mitchell McDeere and his family 10 years after the events of the film and novel. As a young associate, McDeere brought down the prestigious Memphis law firm of Bendini, Lambert & Locke, which operated as a front for the Chicago mob -- and his life was never the same. After a difficult decade, which included a stay in the Federal Witness Protection program, Mitch and his family now emerge from isolation to reclaim their lives and their future -- only to find that past dangers are still lurking and new threats are everywhere. "The Firm" is produced by Entertainment One in association with Sony Pictures Television and Paramount Pictures. The executive producers are Grisham, Lukas Reiter ("Law & Order," "Boston Legal"), John Morayniss ("Haven," "Hung"), Michael Rosenberg ("Hung," "Skins") and Noreen Halpern ("Rookie Blue," "Hung").

New Comedies

'WHITNEY' -- A hilarious look at modern love, "Whitney" is a new multi-camera comedy series about Whitney (Whitney Cummings, "Chelsea Lately") and Alex (Chris D'Elia, "Glory Daze"), a happily unmarried couple. Together for five years, the duo is in no rush to get hitched. However, after attending yet another one of their friends' weddings, Whitney realizes that she and Alex are dangerously close to relationship boredom. Determined not to let that happen, Whitney consults her close circle of opinionated girlfriends -- including Lily (Zoe Lister-Jones, "The Other Guys") and Roxanne (Rhea Seehorn, "The Starter Wife") -- and then snaps into action. I think it's an awful schedule. I think NBC is DOA on Mondays and Tuesdays. The Voice might do better when it returns but it will be going up against the Bachelor and the strongest edition of DWTS. The Playboy Club won't have no lead in support. Tuesdays was dying last year until the Voice showed up. I don't know what they think will change next year? Two comedies leading off Wednesday is horrible. Thursday's low rated comedy lineup will probably do worse and putting the sci-fi Grimm on Fridays opposite Fringe and Supernatural is real smart NBC.

The Voice might do better when it returns but it will be going up against the Bachelor. The Voice will absolutely destroy The Bachelor, it's a lot stronger.

i like how NBC puts Community and Parks together to lead off the night, with no support. and then they'll wonder what's going wrong when neither shows can pull in a 2.0. seriously, they're giving Whitney the post-Office slot? i saw the preview - not only is it terrible, but it doesn't fit in with the rest of the block. Office/Parks are a great pairing, the two shows compliment each other well and it gives Parks decent ratings. pairing it with Community is going to help neither shows.

Up All Night looks promising, but leading off a night?

i dont see the point in putting the sing off against dancing with the stars i dont work for the networks but ive stuided enough about them to know that the idea is to counterprogram up all night might be an ok show but it will die on wednesday im indifferent to community as a show but why after 2 seasons of low ratings are they still using it to lead off thursday? it has a cult following and its followers will find it no matter where it is so why not just put up all night or parks and rec in as the lead off show ? grimm might do better than expected on fridays depending on what the other networks put against it esp if it can bring in the younger viewers that cbs esp has trouble atracttring on fridays why is the biggest loser still 2 hours ? put it at one hour and move parenthood to the 900/800 slot and try the 2 wednesday comedies at 10/9 as counterprograming to the good wife and body of proof or put community and 1 new comedy there that way you still have at least 2 new comedies on thursdays and it would nbc a chance to see if community can grow beyond its cult following mondays are pretty much doa at 10/9 they should have kept harrys law there sure it atractts older viewers but now with this iineup on mondays nbc will not have older viewers middle aged viewers or younger viewers in fact this monday lineup will be lucky to get hash marks in ratings books

"Awake" sounds really good and "Grimm" and "Prime Suspect" I would also be interested in sampling to see if they're any good.

I have to say, though, "Grimm," seems like a show that will be a cult hit (a baby version of Pushing Daisies sort of) that will be cancelled before it's given a real chance - I can just see a headline saying "Grimm looking grim on Friday nights."

Agreed. While I definitely understand putting reality on Monday nights, reality on Tuesdays was a bad move. This is the only night without sitcoms at 8pm on a network. They should've put the new comedy block on Tuesdays from 8-9pm, followed by Parenthood and Harry's Law. AWAKE looks very promising, and it should've had a fall premiere.

I think, Harry's Law was one of the best new shows NBC had last year, looks like their just throwing it away, it will never make it on wednesday nights, if they really hate it that bad, they should just cancel it. As usual NBC as the worse schedule on TV, I expected better with new execs in place.

The only thing that looks worse than "Whitney" is "Are You There Vodka, It's Me Chelsea".

It boggles my mind that NBC would waste the prime post-Office timeslot on an incompatible (and unfunny) multi-cam when they have a perfectly promising single-cam workplace comedy ("Free Agents") that they could launch there. Another mind-boggler. I actually think NBC's Friday-Tuesday schedule makes a lot of sense, but what in the hell are they doing on Wednesday and Thursday? If this results in Community and Parks getting canceled, I'm done with NBC for life.

It's a shame about Law & Order LA being cancelled. They really messed up with this show, it was doing decent on Wednesdays, but it's put on a 4 month hiatus after airing only 8 episodes, coming back after some "retooling" on MONDAY nights. (Which is NOT a good night for such a show to air, especially on NBC. They moved the original L&O to Mondays last season after Jay Leno Show went off the air--then it got cancelled!)

The smartest thing they could have done, was leave it on Wednesdays with SVU, at least for the first season. And if they were gonna move it then, pick a better night than Monday! :mad:

I actually haven't but after posting this message, I was reading around and saw a lot of people comparing the two like you did. The trailer actually looked okay, though. I'll try it out to see how good/bad it is but I don't really anticipate myself watching that for a whole season.

From October 24-27 NBC will air Prime Suspect at 10PM every night. The Parenthood and SVU repeats scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday that week have been pulled. I got this information from someone who works at an NBC station.

Fear Factor will air Mondays from 8-10pm from Dec. 12 to Jan. 30 for eight straight weeks.

Lineup Features Premieres of Four New Series in "Smash," "The Firm," "Fashion Star" and "Are You There, Chelsea?"

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. - November 14, 2011 - NBC today announced its new mid-season 2012 schedule which features the premieres of four new series in "Smash" (February 6), "The Firm" (two-hour premiere January 8, time slot premiere January 12), "Fashion Star" (March 13) and "Are You There, Chelsea?" (January 11). The new lineup also includes the return of "The Voice," "30 Rock," "The Celebrity Apprentice" and "Who Do You Think You Are?"

In addition, there are day and time period changes for "Whitney," "Up All Night," "Rock Center with Brian Williams" and "Harry's Law."

Following are night-by-night details:

Mondays: Last spring's hit vocal competition series "The Voice" returns even louder with an hour-long season debut following Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday, February 5 (10-11 p.m. ET, time approximate) and then resumes in its regular day and time on Monday, February 6 (8-10 p.m. ET). Following "The Voice" is the much-anticipated musical drama "Smash" which premieres Monday, February 6 (10-11 p.m. ET).

Tuesdays: "Fashion Star" - the new reality competition series hosted and executive-produced by Elle Macpherson - will premiere with a two-hour episode on Tuesday, March 13 (9-11 p.m. ET) and resume on Tuesday, March 20 (10-11 p.m. ET). "The Biggest Loser" will open a new edition on Tuesday, January 3 (8-10 p.m. ET) followed by "Parenthood" (10-11 p.m. ET) which continues through its season finale on February 28.

Wednesdays: The freshman comedy "Whitney" (8-8:30 p.m. ET) moves into a new day and time beginning January 11 followed by the series debut of the new comedy "Are You There, Chelsea?" (8:30-9 p.m. ET) on January 11. "Rock Center with Brian Williams" (9-10 p.m. ET) also joins the Wednesday lineup starting February 8. "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" remains at 10-11 p.m. (ET).

Thursdays: The new drama "The Firm" moves into the Thursday lineup (10-11 p.m. ET) beginning January 12 following its two-hour premiere the previous Sunday (January 8) from 9-11 p.m. ET. The first-season comedy "Up All Night" will also move to Thursday nights at 9:30 p.m. (ET) on January 12 which is also the night that multiple Emmy Award-winning "30 Rock" returns for its season debut (8-8:30 p.m. ET). "Parks and Recreation" (8:30-9 p.m. ET) and the Emmy-winning "The Office" (9-9:30 p.m. ET) remain in the same time periods.

Fridays: The returning series "Who Do You Think You Are?" makes its season debut on February 3 (8-9 p.m. ET). "Chuck" will have its two-hour series finale on January 27th (8-10 p.m. ET). "Grimm" (9-10 p.m. ET) and "Dateline NBC" (10-11 p.m. ET) remain in the respective time periods.

NBC made slight improvements (particularly on Mon & Thurs) but they needed to be bolder with the state they're in.

Tuesdays is their biggest miss right now. Fashion Star will go nowhere. I think they should shrink The Biggest Loser to an hour, add a second night/results night of The Voice at 9pm and have new drama Awake at 10pm.

Even if The Voice does anything close to (or even if it is higher) than last spring, NBC is going to be down even from its horrendous fall without football. The Super Bowl is the only thing that will likely keep them up year-to-year, but even that is not certain because they are doing terrible in the fall. I don't think on any night NBC will be competitive but Monday nights. 30 Rock is going to do a 1.7 at best, Whitney is not capable to lead-off (and will get crushed by Idol and the competitive comedy competition) and I don't see Fashion Star clicking (Jessica Simpson didn't really bring any eyeballs on network TV in the past). They would be better off with Parenthood in that slot. As for The Firm, yeah it can't do any worse than Prime Suspect, but did you know Rock Center is doing worse than Playboy Club? So yeah it is possible, lol.

If NBC wanted to make bold changes for winter, they would have scheduled their buzzworthy drama Awake and Betty White. To me, their schedule is the same old, same old. Rock Center is like Dateline with a different name. It is Friday material and a lead-in does not matter for this show. If you give it The Office lead-in, it will still do close to what it does now. I guess we shall see what happens for them, but I just don't see anything really clicking minus-Monday. And if Monday doesn't perform to what they expect, then NBC is dead for the season.

All the reality shows that are down, air twice a year (Dancing with the Stars, The Biggest Loser). The Sing Off is WAY down, but that's because it has never aired against competition before.

The Celebrity Apprentice could be lucky since it airs once a season.

Grimm gets a full season, will air on a special night and time Thursday, December 8.

True that it has gotten series lows in the ratings the past two Thursdays. And its special Thursday at 9pm airing was a historic low for NBC Thursday at 9pm for an original airing, I believe.

I'm not a big 30 Rock fan but I'd rather have it on then any reality show. Just be glad it's on NBC. I was a Chuck fan and I know it only lasted as long as it did because of the network it was on. I wish it was a mass appeal hit but I'm just grateful for the years it was on.

Well I hate reality TV too, but the fact is anything NBC puts on against The Big Bang Theory & Idol is going to get crushed, so it may as well be something that doesn't cost too much.

And yeah I'm thankful for NBC's low ratings because they've kept some of my favorite shows alive lol, although things are just getting dire this year.

Not trying to defend the ratings because obviously they are not good but a 1.9 isn't the worst NBC could do (see: Whitney, Chelsea's ratings this week...), in fact these days a 1.9 is usually among the higher end of their weekly ratings for scripted shows.

Oh I know a 1.9 isn't the worst they can do. It's just a historic low for NBC Thursday at 9pm for a new airing.

The Firm is exiled to Saturdays, Awake will air in its slot starting in March.

NBC must be ecstatic about last night's ratings. The Voice might be bigger than Idol now and Smash is their first scripted hit in a long time. If they want to get more competitive a results show for The Voice should be added Tuesdays at 9:00 cutting Biggest Loser down to an hour at 8:00. Then Awake must be moved away from the DOA Thursday slot to Tuesday at 10:00. It will have a better chance there with a strong lead-in and weak competition from ABC and CBS. The Thursday slot was what doomed The Firm, it should have been left after the Apprentice on Sundays as originally scheduled.

The Voice is a hit. Smash had a good debut but lost a lot of viewers at the half hour. Time will tell if that show has staying power. I think Hawaii Five-O will overtake it in a few weeks. Castle is always weak without DWTS as a lead in.

As long as Smash can stay above a 2.5 it's basically a lock for renewal. I think it'll settle in the low 2s/high 3s which is still great for NBC and could be good enough for 1st place.

NBC has cancelled Awake (their only show worth watching). I think it would be a good fit at Syfy.

America's Got Talent will air its last Monday episode on July 2. Will move to Wednesdays starting July 11 and Tuesdays will expand to two-hours.
