Even though Louie DePalma was written as a lowlife and a miscreant, in my opinion, Louie became very likeable. Not that he softened up, but he was so dang funny, you couldn't help but love him. Agree? Disagree?

I agree. It's really that he had a sense of humor about it. If he was just rotten to everyone that would be different but he always treated people the way he did with humor.
Plus, his life sucked. it was easy to see why he'd lash out sometimes. I'm glad that by the end of the show, Louie found a woman that loved him. I like that episode and it shows (though not the first time) that he has a vulnerable side.

Excellent post Adamantium! Indeed, Louie did everything over the top with humor.
