Soap opera fans have taken out a full-page ad in The Hollywood Reporter asking ABC to "please save the soap genre," the publication reports.

The ad contains a letter from "viewers, customers and consumers" who want to express their disappointment to ABC head of daytime programming Brian Frons, president of Disney/ABC Television Group Anne Sweeney and advertisers on daytime TV over the cancellation of "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," the story says.

ABC plans to replace the soaps with two lifestyle shows.

I admire the fans' idea and passion, but with these lunkheads at the helm of daytime TV today - forget it.

...but "THE FANS" who placed the ad in the REPORTER are wasting their time. The "bottom line" at ABC is that their daytime soaps are losing money, ad revenue, viewers and ratings. They want cheaper programming (using "THE VIEW" as their model and guideline), and they're not about to give the time their soaps occupied back to their affiliates, either. Oprah Winfrey can't help "THE FANS", despite their pleas to her, because HER cable network is in trouble, as far as programming and ratings are concerned [she just fired her network's chief executive officer after OWN was on for almost five months!].

Nope, it's just like CBS did after Thanksgiving 1960, when they made the fateful decision to cancel the last of their radio soap operas because not enough listeners and ad revenue could keep them going in the face of daytime television, and wanted to give the time back to their affiliates....this era is just about over as well.
