Paul McCartney and his girlfriend of four years, Nancy Shevell, are engaged to be married.

"Nancy and Paul are getting married," a source close to Shevell, 51, a New York businesswoman, first told PEOPLE Friday. "Ring and all – very exciting."

McCartney's rep later confirmed, but would not provide any more details. The Beatles legend, 68, started dating Shevell in the Hamptons during the summer of 2007, and despite their 17-year age difference, a source close to the couple told PEOPLE they were a perfect pair.

"They have the right chemistry," the source said. "They're both cool, chilled out and optimistic."

The couple most recently stepped out on Monday for a gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

In Love

This will be McCartney's third marriage: He married Linda McCartney in 1969 and Heather Mills in 2002. While his marriage with Mills ended in a messy divorce in 2008, McCartney didn't seem hesitant to give love another shot.

"I just like being in love," he said of his budding romance with Shevell in 2008.

His fiancée even won over the kids – McCartney has five children: Heather, 48, Mary, 41, Stella, 39, James, 33, and Beatrice, 7 – and, in 2009, a source close to Stella said the fashion designer was "thrilled for her father."

If Macca doesn't do a pre-nup this time, he's nuts!

Call me a sentimental old fool and I would be the first one to say pre-nup but Nancy looks very nice and the fact that she isnt in her 30s is a plus!!

Ms. Shevell is independently wealthy. I could be wrong, but I don't think this is a case of gold-digging.

Shevell looks nicer than that One-Legged Bitch Heather Mills!

From everything I've seen and read about her, Nancy Shevell seems like the real deal. Remember the Route 66 road trip she and Paul took a couple of years ago? Plus she does own her own place in the Hamptons and has owned it before dating Paul, so I don't think she's a gold-digger, either. She seems smart and down-to-earth, like Linda.

Let's also not forget that Linda had her own interests and businesses apart from her husband's. Yes, she was Paul's wife, mother of his children, and a member of Wings and reaped the benefits from all of those roles. But she was also well-known for her photography (and that was prior to meeting Paul), started her well-known line of frozen vegetarian dinners, and was a humanitarian. I see more of Linda in Nancy Shevell than in Heather Mills ()!!

A short while before Sir Paul announced he was divorcing Heather Mills, The Who's Roger Daltrey made a comment about her in an interview. He said looking into her eyes was chilling. The coldest look he'd ever seen. Pure ice.

No love apparently for Paul's then-wife and the fact that he felt compelled to express that sentiment publicly kind of surprised me.

She had better be good to Paul or she will have to answer to me! :boxing: :smash:

Speaking of Paul and Linda, I love this video of them and the rest of Wings from their 1976 "Wings Over America" tour:

I heard Shevell became a vegetarian for McCartney...I, myself wouldn't mind going vegetarian...but I'd be a Semi-Tarian (Probably a Porcatarian...just eat only pig meat, but I digress....)

I'm impressed, Monika! That was a deep album cut and not an obvious single.

You reveal more layers of cool with each post you make.;)

How nice for him, for them. The fact that his kids gave Nancy their stamp of approval means a lot. Take that from this stepmom of five. This one's no gold-digger. She's got her own big pile of ca$h. Paul's not getting any younger, and I'd love to see him live out the next few years, decades or whatever God has in store for him, in love.

I hope this marriage works out for Sir Paul, because another divorce will render him completely dis-Shevelled.

Why, thank you. I try. Some of my other Wings favorites include "Arrow Through Me", "Let Me Roll It", "Rockestra Theme", "Hi Hi Hi", "Sally G", etc.

Not an easy task, but it's great that all the kids like her - because Paul's oldest four didn't like Heather Mills at all.

Here's the news of Paul and Linda's big day - and I hope he and Nancy will have a marriage as strong as enduring as the marriage she shared with Linda.

"Hi Hi Hi" was such a positive song in an era where so many songs had obvious drug references. This song was a testament to the power of positivity and greeting people.;)

Unlike, say, the obvious drug reference in "Let Me Roll It."

^ Hidden drug references or not, both are pretty dang catchy songs.

One of my fave Wings ballads is "My Love", which of course, was Paul's song for Linda. I love the photo montage that goes along with the song here.

Linda wrote and recorded an "answer" record to "My Love" called "Love's Full Glory". It appears on her posthumously released solo compilation, Wild Prairie. Gorgeous song. While Linda was never a spectacular vocalist, she knew her limitations and did well within her range, and it works perfectly here:
