Yeah I know I spelled it wrong.

Anyways I know a group of people that are talking about getting together and watching The Ten Commandmentsthis weekend and dont believe in anything.

I find that pretty hypocritical myself.

I don't think that you have to believe in God or Jesus in order to watch and enjoy The Ten Commandments, it's a classic.

I don't believe in ghost or huntings but that doesn't stop me for enjoying Amityville Horror, Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures.

Perhaps they're trying to understand what religion is about. A better idea, in my opinion, would be to go to church. A good church, with someone who gives good sermons and has a good following. It's always a good idea to to have an understanding of what you're rejecting; so you can know why you're rejecting it.

That example isn't hypocritcal to me based on the reasons already given. However, I found it a bit odd when my cousin got married last year. Both he and his fiance were atheists yet still got married in a church. In my opinion, that seemed hypocritical, but maybe that's just me.

So what you are saying is that you have to believe in the said faith that something is based on in order to watch it?

The Passion of the Christ was not only watched by Christians... I don't understand the "hypocrisy" here.

I dunno, but maybe the atheists want to analyze the film...people say they read the Bible more than anyone else...why?

Yes, that's how I feel, too - even though I don't watch those shows. But like Michael, I think two atheists getting married in a church is hypocritical. After all, doesn't a minister have to counsel a couple before agreeing to marry them? Unless they wanted to please their families by having a church wedding as opposed to a City Hall wedding.

Yeah I agree that it is hypocritical for Atheist to marry in a Church, since the Church represents the house of God. I don't believe that a couple has to get counsel from a Minister before they marry. If you're a member of the Church then you probably would. But if you're just renting the Church for your wedding and you hire any Officiant then I think the whole counseling goes out the window.

I also find it hypocritical when athiests celebrate Christmas.

Yeah, but they don't celebrate it for the birth of Christ - they honor the tradition of store-bought gifts!!!!!!

Interestingly, Kerry King of Slayer says he doesn't believe in God, so therefore he doesn't believe in the devil. But he says he finds it more interesting to write about Satan in Slayer's songs. So much for people believing that Slayer are "Satan-worshippers".

Bassist-vocalist Tom Araya actually has Christian leanings.

One doesn't necessarily need to subscribe to religious belief in order to create or appreciate religiously oriented songs or art. For atheists to enjoy "The Ten Commandments" means that they appreciate the drama and the universal meanings in the story on film. We don't necessarily have to believe in
hobbits and Middle Earth to appreciate "The Lord Of the Rings".

Most of my friends are athiests and they call Christmas "crimmus". Also they tend to makes jokes about Jesus and Christianity that are in really bad taste. I ignore them, but sometimes it aint easy. At the same time I dont shove my beliefs down their throat, but I wish they would be a little more respectful.

I was an atheist for a dozen or so years (Christian now). Even as an atheist, I loved Christmas. It was a time to spend with family, to love and be loved.

My favorite part of Christmas -- even back then -- has always been watching others open my gifts to them.

As for the movies, I can see why atheists can appreciate The Ten Commandments: it's a marvelous film! I watched The Passion of the Christ as an atheist, and was moved by Jesus' suffering.

Just because we don't subscribe to the religious beliefs does not mean that we can't enjoy them in a historical context.
I've been identifying myself as non-religious since late in my teens but I still enjoy what I learn about holidays and other peoples' beliefs in general. I'm certainly not attacking people for what they believe in. When I was younger I was more critical (about fanatics especially) but as I started to gain higher education and mature, I began to respect others.

The only people I genuinely outright hate are the ones that get tangled up in things like Westboro Baptist and use their religion as a weapon, which at most times goes completely against what they're supposed to be believing in.

They should just rename it the Phelps Family Church and leave Baptists out of it. And I'm not even a Baptist!!!!

While they're at it they should leave the word Church out of their name too! What they do and profess has nothing at all to do with being part of the Body of Christ.

I've always felt with aethiests they clearly believe there is a God for them to NOT believe in him. They're acknowledging him by doing that. I'm guessing they celebrate Christmas and Easter too, two holidays about JESUS. There's no getting around that part of it, the holiday is what it's about.

IMO you can call yourself an atheist or a devout Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist etc., etc., but, on some level, we're all agnostics. We all have our doubts, and none of us really has proof of anything.

We won't know for sure, until we're dead; maybe not even then.

Which is why it's called belief. Is there proof that there is no proof of anything?

It's real for us, but of course we are bombarded with the secular aspects of the holidays, which is what they are "celebrating". Nothing wrong with that, but yeah, they are missing out on something.

Religion is, of course, a personal matter.

But I don't understand athiests who go on about the absurdity of a God.

The universe is infinite - they can wrap their heads around that, but a creator is just too much.

One blue marble stuck in infinity makes all the sense in the world, but God is just ridiculous.

Agreed. I like the expression "It takes more faith to be an atheist than it does to believe in a creator.". It's probably cliched by now, but it speaks volumes.

Atheists are not people who "do not" believe in God. They are people who believe that there is no God. Two very different concepts.

I guess atheists celebrate christmas to have fun with many people around, but not for Christ b'day. :)
Though it is my personal opinion, but I guess it is true to most of the atheists around the world. :)
