WERE THEY THE TWO BIGGEST STARS ON THE SHOW?
Where would you rank them in terms of all time tv friendships?

I liked the friendship between Mary and Rhoda. Rhoda had more street saavy than Mary so it came across as if Rhoda was the older sister and showing Mary the ropes of life.
Yes before Rhoda went on her own series they were the two stars and always looked forward to their interaction.
Here was another Mary Tyler Moore friendship that was underrated was her and Ann Guilbert Morgan of The Dick Van Dyke Show. Laura and Millie were a good team together and were equally funny in their scenes together. I only wish more stories could have been centered around them.

Well....sorta...Mary is DEFINITELY #1 but then....it's kinda of a tossup between Rhoda and Lou - at least to me (with the marvelous Betty White clocking in right behind)

The real strength of this show to me is the way the entire ensemble plays off each other. You could argue that Mary is the star because she plays the title character. Or you could argue that Lou is the star because he is the boss of the newsroom. But to me the star of this show is the cast as a whole. They play of each other so well and so unselfishly allowing each of them a chance in the spotlight on a regular basis.

Yes, that's how I feel, too.
Mary was a very interesting and likeable character and Rhoda was a great "second banana" (though I'm not sure she was a great leading character). But taken away from the great ensemble I don't think they would have been enough to keep the show afloat, let alone let it climb to the creative heights that it did.
