Ordered from a new spot (won't say where), and got The Lucy Show Complete Fourth Season in the mail yesterday. The set looks great. Haven't watched any entire episodes yet, but scanned through each disc to check things out.

I was looking forward to seeing the cleaned-up version of the kaleidoscope opening -- I've only ever really seen it on the public domain releases and on bad syndication prints -- but I was surprised to find that even on this set, the opening is not in great shape. Don't get me wrong, it's far better than on any of the PD releases, but I guess I was thinking it would be as crystal-clear as the actual episodes have been on these official sets. Fuzzy picture on the main part of the opening, and occasionally (particularly on Lucy Bags a Bargain, and maybe others) a really noticeable amount of debris on the second part of the opening.

The actual episodes look terrific and it's especially fun to see all the details of the sets, especially Lucy's new home. Just skipping through the episode where she's settling in, there's a great scene where Lucy meets Mary Jane in her backyard garden and another where she explores some unique features of her new home. Happened upon a truly hilarious moment in Lucy Bags a Bargain, where Lucy helps a glammed-up Elvia Allman try on hats. Although I like The Lucy Show a lot, I've never found many truly laugh-out-loud moments (especially post-Viv), but this was a really funny scene.

I think perhaps the novelty of producing the show in color had begun to wear off a little, because the look of the show this year, including sets, costuming and make-up, is a bit more subdued. Everything looks more natural than in the past two color seasons. Honestly, some of it seems a little washed-out to me, particularly Mr. Mooney's office, which was never a real stunner but looked better in the final two seasons. It's a matter of preference, of course, but if I'm watching Lucy in color, I kind of enjoy the candy-color palette, as unnatural as it may be.

Won't get to sit down and view the full episodes and special features until this weekend, so can't really comment on that. I'm looking forward to watching this transitional year, though, where Lucy's getting her feet wet in her new surroundings, before she's chained full-time to her desk in Mr. Mooney's office.

Thanks for the preview. As for the color in the 2nd and 3rd seasons, I think the reason it may seem unnatural may have something to do with the fact that the show was still being broadcast in black and white those two years. The unusual coloring may have been needed in order to broadcast a suitable black and white image.

Thanks for posting the screencaps. Loving the menu design!

My copy is on its way. So I'm very excited about this. Hopefully, Season 5 sees a release this year. By next year, we should have the complete series, finally!!!, on dvd. :cheer:

Did they keep the original "CBS presents this program in color" tags on any of the openings?

Season 4 will be the last one for me, I plan to order this soon. I'm not interested to have seasons 5 and 6 on DVD.
