View Full Version : Is Your Family Generous/Welcoming Or Neither?
Family Ties Forever! 04-20-2011, 12:04 AM When you go to a family member's house do you feel welcome? Are you allowed to or encouraged to eat there or have anything to drink, ie: water, soda, juice? Or are you expected to bring your own drink and/or food? Do you have to pay for any food you eat there?
I'm just wondering. I don't feel very welcome when I go to my mother's, fiannce's and sister's house. It's gotten petty, imo.
My family's very welcoming. They have a "make yourself at home" attitude when it comes to that kind of stuff.
Marvo301 04-20-2011, 12:17 AM My family is both generous and welcoming. I feel very at home in any of their homes.
Janice 04-20-2011, 12:50 PM My family was great. We felt at home in each others' homes. We'd open each others' fridges, clothes' closet, just about anything. There are limits to anything. I wouldn't open the drawer of anyone's nightstand, and I wouldn't rummage through anyone's medicine cabinet.
I'm sorry you feel that way, Jenny. That must be a lousy feeling. I think it has something to do with the fact that she's with a man who's not your father. Lou's kids feel comfortable enough to open our fridge, yet it stops there. Ditto when we're at their homes. I wouldn't even open their fridges. I think if your parents never divorced, things would be different. I could be wrong.
PlayOn 04-20-2011, 03:05 PM i was blessed with an awesome family. i guess if my grandparents on my dads side have one quirk it's nobody is allowed in their house while they're gone. no grandchildren. anybody. i think it's ok if your working on it (plumbing, ect.) but that's it. but everybody else is pretty chill about it.
and, jenny, i'm sorry your sister and mother fiance are like that. soon, tho, we'll have a Home where nobody is like that (if you believe in heaven and whatnot) :)
JamesG 04-20-2011, 03:14 PM Do you mean going for a "regular" or casual visit or to some sort of party or holiday gathering?
Whenever I visit someone's house, family or friend, casually I am never expected to pay for or bring my own food along. They also don't mind when I want soemthing to eat in their homes and some don't even care when I go through the fridge without asking.
Growing up my family was the same way - guests never had to bring anything.
Regarding family functions or parties, the hosts would usually tell (or ask) different people on what to get; someone gets the salads, someone else gets snacks, someone else provides booze...etc.
So yeah, for me going to someone's house and being expected to pay for eating their food or having to bring my own is unheard of.
Mr. Television 04-20-2011, 03:31 PM I'm very sorry that you're being treated this way Jenny. I've always felt welcomed whenever I visited a relatives house. I've never just went in their fridge unless I had bought something but if I asked them for anything , they'd say help yourself.
Family Ties Forever! 04-20-2011, 09:14 PM Thanks. :)
It's nice to see most families are generous and welcoming.
I have "family-like" relationships with people who aren't members of my natural family (not to dishonor my own family; they're wonderful). You can have that kind of relationship, too. Do you have families to whom you're close -- people from church, co-workers, close friends; etc.?
That's my clumsy way of saying you deserve to be loved. It's heartbreaking to hear that your mom and sister seen to be incapable right now of providing that feeling of acceptance and belonging everyone needs from their family.
JoPol_wannabe 04-20-2011, 10:07 PM I have a very small family. My dad is an only child but my grandparents always made us feel welcome in there home. On my moms side I have two aunts. One who is very welcoming. She lives about an hour from us and she says whenever were in town and want to stay for the weekend we are welcome to stay at her place. My other aunt and uncle are different they don't really invite us over I mean if we need to stop over to drop something off we are welcome to come over then but otherwise they don't really invite us over, but they will come over to our house and help us with whatever we need.
