NBC sports boss Dick Ebersol says the former Outdoor Life Network will get an NBC brand name in the next 90 days.

It'll probably be something simple, along the lines of "NBC Sports." That's pretty much their only choice if they don't want a name as stupid as "Versus."

What does everyone think their chances are of becoming a true competitor to ESPN in coming years?

Why wound NBC want to rename it? Who is NBC to do it? They have as much say as CBS, ABC, FOX, Nickelodeon, ESPN, etc. if you ask me.

NBC/Universal owns the Versus channel so they have every right to rename it if they so choose. I expect the new nameto be something like NBC Sportsworld.

i bet they go the other way and pick a "SyFY" / "Cloo" -type goofy name

"Spaurtz" or "Axshun", or if they are going to be carrying the hockey, maybe even "Pûx"

:eek2:

Since when? How come the media didn't report it? What do the powers that be at Versus have against being a standalone independent network?

So much for my desire to see it go back to being the Outdoor Network!

Since the Comcast/NBC Universal merger became official. Dick Ebersol and NBC Sports were put in charge of the network.

Not sure what you mean by "standalone independent network." Comcast has owned it for several years (perhaps since the beginning).

I mean a network that is not owned by another one, unlike ABC to Disney. Therefore ABC is not a "standalone independent network."

Gotcha. And I agree: I'd like to see more independent networks, as well. But in this age of mergers and buyouts, that's becoming less and less likely. The majority of broadcast networks, cable channels and even local TV stations are owned by a corporate behometh.

In fact, NBC Sports Network drew bigger ratings in 2004 when it was called Outdoor Life Network.
