It had been available on YouTube, but it's long gone now.

The original pilot was filmed in early 1963 in Hollywood, with a slightly different supporting cast {Mark Miller as "Martin Lane"; Charles Herbert as "Ross"}, and a San Francisco setting. After ABC gave the green light to produce a weekly series for the fall, producer William Asher decided the California child labor laws were too strict to enable Patty to film more hours per episode (she was 16 at the time the pilot was filmed). So, production shifted to New York where restrictions on child actors were more relaxed, and she could do more- without any social workers or inspectors breathing down producers' necks.
With the change in location, the "Lane" family also became New Yorkers as well...and William Schallert and Paul O'Keefe replaced Miller and Herbert, who were unavailable. The pilot was reworked into a "flashback" episode (footage from the original pilot was blended with new scenes), and shown at the end of the first season.

thanx, TV KNOWLEDGE FAN! I was wondering why they changed locations, etc.
But you didn't mention that the name of Martins newspaper was changed also (well, duh! They couldn't very well keep the name "San Fransisco Chronicle" if the Lanes lived in New York) the Lanes also had a housekeeper, the theme was different, and that a couple scenes were put in the shows opening and closing.

(by the way; what were you doing up at 4 a.m.?:) )

Yep, it is a shame that Shout couldn't include the actual pilot in the dvd-set. What I would have liked even more would have been some of the cast commercials for Breck. Speaking of the original pilot, I'm thinking it must have been filmed around the same time Patty Duke guested in that episode of "The Wide Country," as her hair-style seems fairly similar.

You can see one of the Breck ads here...judging from Patty and Cathy's hair, it appears to be from season two.

To treky:

I went to the tv4u site and can't figure out how to get to the Patty Duke pilot from there, or whether the pilot is free, or not. Can you walk us through it?
