Sure, there were other great platonic couples in TV History, but in my opinion Mary Richards and Lou Grant were probably the most notable. Think about it, if this show was on today, Mary and Lou would've more than likely slept together by the 1st season, had a baby by season 5 and get married in the finale. LOL Agree? Disagree?

I always thought of Lou as a father figure/mentor to Mary, and she was his protege/surrogate daughter. I never saw them as potential lovers. I think their relationship was just fine as is.

Oh, I agree 100%, that's why I think it was one if not the best in history. Like I said, if this show was made in the 2000's, I think Mary & Lou would be a lot different.

If the show were being made today, Mary would hop into bed with Lou to further her career, and he could brag to his buddies that he'd landed this hot chick. Thank goodness they didn't go that route in the 1970s!!!

Lou and Mary may have been one of TV's best platonic couples but my favorite platonic TV couples is Buddy and Sally from The Dick Van Dyke Show. even though Buddy was married to Pickles he seemed to spend more time with Sally. They even put together a nightclub act together and played the Catskills on the weekends!

Another good choice indeed. Perhaps MTM got the idea of keeping Mary & Lou just friends from her previous show?

I think Mary carried over a lot of ideas from TDVDS into her own show. The balance between work life and home life. Her Co-workers being close friends. Being friends with her neighbors. Hosting parties. (although the Petrie's parties were never the disasters that Mary Richards parties were!)
