Game Not Over: Could SAW Creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell Return to Franchise?

Last October Lionsgate swore up and down that they were releasing Jigsaw's final game in SAW 3D aka SAW: The Final Chapter. With that, and to the dismay of some fans, the finale didn't quite close the door, and left things wide open.

Over the years, franchise creators James Wan (director) and Leigh Whannell (writer/star) have been extremely open about their desires to return to the games they created back in 2004.

In fact, Wan has stated that the first film was only 30% what he envisioned (budget and time affected it).

With the release of Insidious, Wan and Whannell spoke with IGN about their desire to end the game "right," so to speak:

I have to ask you about the SAW franchise.
Why do you think it has been so popular throughout the years?

Leigh: I don't know.. it's hard to deconstruct why an audience loves something. It gets easier in retrospect but I still am not sure why people responded to the SAW films so much.

I think that the time was right for a more extreme horror film. Audiences have just come out of seeing slasher movies...

James: Timing is very important... that's what it comes down to. Timing and the way it connected with a whole new generation of kids that did not grow up with these kind of films... I mean you know films from the '70s.

Not that we grew up in the '70s, but I mean we watched films like 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and all of those films. So I think that this is this generation's more extreme movie.

The last one was supposed to be the final one of the franchise.. you guys worked as executive producers on these movies.

Have we really seen the last of the SAW films?

Leigh: I don't know... it's hard to tell.

James: I will just say you can always count on capitalism guys. That's all I have to say.

It is finished for now.. but the fact that it's such a well-known franchise means that it's going to come back eventually at some point. Leigh and I probably won't be involved with it but that's not to say that the studio won't bring it back.

Hopefully they'll get someone really cool.

How would they get you back on the SAW movies?

James: I would come back if we're allowed to do something different and really cool.

Leigh: Yeah, we would want to do something that was bit of a different take.
