What I have read, both Mary Tyler Moore (MTM) and Dick Van Dyke (DVD, ironically) were looking for a new series in the 1980's, so why didn't they just put them back together again as a revised "Dick Van Dyke Show"?
It did not have to be called this (since Mary was the headliner of her own series for 7 years) but it could of had been the continuation of the same series from the 1960's, only 20 years later. They could of explained the age old question of why DVD and a 25 year old hot MTM slept in seperate beds back in the day. What happened to Richie? Although the kid was a ******, he grew brains in adulthood and Rob and Laura could be grandparents. They would of matured a lot, with Laura not being so much of "Oh Rob!"
Laura is so much of a sexy name than Mary anyway. When I think of "Mary" it is either the son of God or that hot woman who was popular in the 1960's and 70's.
I think most of the cast would of came aboard. Rose Marie and Mory Amsterdam no problem. Richard Deacon died in the 1980's and if this show came to fruition, Richard might have died and there could be a show in his rememberance (with Alan Brady lamenting the loss of his sidekick)
The DVD Show was tops in the ratings when it left, and I think a lot of people would of enjoyed seeing the two back together again. I don't think Carl Reiner would of turned this down. It would of brought DVD and MTM together again (like it should have been) and I think very profitable. I can't for a moment believe that someone back in the day did not think of it and they turned t down. Shame.
