Yes, she was homely but she was also thin. By the time she was cast as "Thelma" on "Amen" she was teetering on obesity. That was one of the bigger reasons why she was a mismatch for "Reubenz'

Okaaay? Yes, they are. She actually looked better on AMEN. AMH did not seem borderline obese to me on AMEN. She might have been big boned (As Rueben's mother puts it) or a few pounds overweight but she was all right. Thelma looked real good when she was wearing those business suits and looked stunning when she and the Reverend actually tied the knot. She was in a NBC movie of the week back in 1990 with Jasmine Guy where she played an attorney and homegirl was sharp. Those long skirts and sometimes not so great hairdos were part of downplaying the beauty of the character.

Speaking of her wedding to Reuben, I will never forget the mixup from the bridal shop when she stomped down the stairs in a tutu-like dress. That was one of the funniest moments of the whole series, may be topped only when she stormed into Army headquarters in her real wedding gown. :rofl:

Yes. Those were two, funny moments. Thelma was whiny but if you messed with her, she'd be up in your face within a heartbeat. She'd be ready to beat you down.:mad:

It's annoying. People say the ugliest things in the world behind the computer. I rarely get into arguments online but when I do, I let them bark so I can see where their angle is and then I go rounds untill they get bored or tired of arguing with me. LOL. If Jennifer Love Hewitt is a whale, then that's her business. Like these haters are perfect. LOL.

I thought Thelma was pretty sharp when she wanted to be. Plus we have to remember that Anna Maria Horsford is playing a role. That woman in real life is sharp, pretty, intelligent and articulate. I always noticed that about her even as a child.

She's worked pretty steadily in the 20-some years since Amen went off the air. She was in some Wayans Brothers show, and a bunch of other things. She seems like a pretty cool lady. :cool:

The shocking part is your rarely see blacks in soaps at all! Soaps are obsesses with hot white women and men to a lesser extent. I mean look at Dallas! Not a single black or non-white was ever on there in a regular role and the daytimes soaps are mostly the same although I know there have been a few blacks.

But soaps are basically extinct now anyway!

Amazing that (according to the People article) for such a "homely" woman, Clifton Davis found her attractive, "Rev. Johnny" had a big crush on her, and that she had a cute real-life boyfriend. I think because AMH wasn't what some would call "conventionally attractive", people like her are labeled as ugly. What a shame.

I totally agree.
Also, the beauty of her character went way beyond the physical. She was lovable and grew on you. "Ugly" and "obese" are not appropriate descriptions of her at all.

Poor Thelma was also a victim of the 80s fashions, the shoulder pads. AMH is a fairly tall woman, and shoulder pads are not what tall women need because they look like linebackers!! Most of her wardrobe was not very flattering, but I have to say that on her wedding day, when she received the wrong dress from the bridal shop - I SCREAMED with laughter watching a furious Thelma stomp down the stairs in a ridiculous white tutu thing. How AMH and the rest of the cast got through that scene without dissolving into hysterics is beyond me!! I wonder how many takes they needed to get through it. :rofl:

That scene with the dress always cracked me up. The way that Thelma came down those stair and made the phone call cracked me up! I hadn't seen that since I was 12 and saw it again for the first time recently. Now, that catlover posted the pics, I'm laughing all over again.
