Hey there, I'm a conservative 20-year-old who likes a number of classic TV shows, including Cheers, All In The Family and Married... with Children.

I have seen some of MB, but have not really clicked with it, so like I said in the thread title, did you have to be around (and I mean old enough to remember the issues/politicians discussed) and/or be a liberal to like this show?

I liked the show even though I would have been considered conservative--though I really didn't have much political awareness, I look back now and see how my values were in line with that perspective. (Still are.) That is probably exactly why I did like it--it made such good fun of self-absorbed liberal news media types! On the other hand, it did bug me how overly dim the one "conservative" member of the cast--Corky--came across! But you couldn't help but like her, she was sweet and cute LOL....

Aside from strictly politics, I liked the show for the improbable chemistry between Murphy and Eldon--it showed that even a rich, famous liberal could relate in a friendly way with a lower-class employee without being condescending.

I used to watch MB during the first 4 seasons. After the Dan Quayle incident, I stopped watching. The show just got too political. I don't watch tv to be preached at. The best newsroom sitcom was The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

I've seen The Mary Tyler Moore Show, not my cup of tea, would rather watch that than MB though.

I agree, MTM was probably more "real" and emotionally satisfying. And yeah, the Dan Quayle thing was kind of a last straw in my opinion too.

I disagree with the politics on Murphy Brown but it's still one of my favorite shows. I wish it aired somewhere.

I was a kid who didn't understand any of the politics at the time, but it was my favorite shows. I loved Murphy. Still one of my favorite shows.

Anyways to answer your question, yes, you would have had to been alive when the show debuted (1988) to have appreciated it. I was just a few years older than you are now when it debuted, and I'm afraid it was stale dated even then, that's why it never went into syndication.

I loved this show when I was little and I didn't know or understand a thing about politics. In fact, I was 5 yrs. old in 1988 when this debuted. So, you don't have to have been a liberal or understand the things going on at the time to like this show. It helped to understand some of the jokes, but it wasn't necessary as I still loved it.

I was a kid and some of the politics went over my head, until a local politician visited our school.

Politics are still a little silly, I learned that very early on.
