I'm sure some of you know this already, but-Luccile Ball was responsible for getting "STAR TREK" on the air. The first season was filmed at Desilu, and when the pilot was screened for some studio execs.; none of them liked it exept Lucy since she liked sci-fi. So she ordered them to go with it, and since she owned the studio, noone wanted to go against her.

She was also responsible for a couple other series with similar background stories: Mannix and Mission: Impossible. Those two series ultimately became big hits on network TV and had long network runs. And Mission: Impossible, like Star Trek, decades later spawned a series of hit movies. And years before those shows, Desi Arnaz was responsible for getting The Untouchables on the air, which also spawned a movie version decades later. And it shouldn't be forgotten that the pilot for The Twilight Zone was produced as an episode of Desi Arnaz's Desilu Playhouse, so in that sense he was responsible for that classic, too.

Just goes to prove what I always say, all television genres has Lucy and Desi to thank!

Lucy didn't like sci-fi or at least she wasn't a big fan. She picked "Star Trek" based on the name. She thought it was a show about stars (celebrities) going on adventures. Weird, but true.

Lucy also told Peter Graves that she didn't understand "Mission: Impossible." He asked her if she did errands during the show and she said yes. Graves told her that "Mission: Impossible" was a show that you have to watch from beginning to end without interruption. Lucy did and later told him she "got it." This story was on PBS' Pioneers of Television series.
