Was the switch ever explained? Why was there a switch anyway?

I don't recall any explanation as to why they switched Swanny for Hoppy. Just Smitty comes around the Sanford's one day and introduces his new partner. Personally I liked the "schtick" of Swanny better, but Hoppy was ok.

I don't think no explanation was needed since the roles of the officers were very small. That would be like asking why Mike the Bartender left the Reagle Beagle on THree's Company-lol
