In the second or third season, there was an episode where Washington gets hooked on pills after a basketball injury. Although the episode was about the gang's efforts to get Washington off drugs, the subject was handled semi-seriously. This is memorable for Barbarino's infamous line "Gimme drugs, gimme drugs!"
A couple of seasons later, during the fourth and final year, Horshack becomes an alcoholic and it's done like an Afterschool Special, with ultra-serious overtones.
It's interesting how the tone shifted after Kotter got new writers and Executive producer James Komack decided he wanted to to issue-oriented shows.
