"Jersey Shore" Blasted Over Italian 'Stereotypes'
28 March 2011

U.S. reality TV show "Jersey Shore" has caused uproar in Italy, with critics blasting the show for portraying "stereotype" descendants of the European country.

The MTV program attracted negative comments after its launch in the U.S. in 2009 due to the castmembers' liberal use of the word 'Guido' - slang for working class Italian-Americans.

The show began broadcasting in Italy this month (Mar11) and has caused a fire storm, with critics blasting its portrayal of Americans with Italian heritage.

The controversy has also gotten stronger due to the fact that "Jersey Shore" plans to film in Italy for an upcoming season.

Columnist Roberto Del Bove writes in New Notzie newspaper, "They embody the worst stereotypes of Italians, multiplied by thousands and Americanized."

And a writer for Rome-based publication Corriere della Sera blasts the cast as having "slicked hair, exaggerated narcissism, boundless love for the family and outlandish eccentricity."

"Jersey Shore" Cast Gets Mixed Reception in Florence (VIDEO)
by Nick Zaino
posted May 16th 2011

The cast of "Jersey Shore" isn't terribly popular with some Italian-Americans, who feel that JWoww, The Situation, Snooki and the crew represent some ugly stereotypes.

The show is now filming in Florence, Italy, and "Today" found a lot of Italian-Italians aren't so hot on "Jersey Shore" either.

They asked some people in the street their opinions and spoke with the mayor of Florence, who had trouble understanding what a "Snooki" was.

"They are full of tattoo, they get drunk," one woman in the street said. "I think they are stupid."

Another woman said that Italians are not like the cast.

The mayor of Florence thought perhaps the arts could save The Situation on the rest of the "Jersey Shore" crew.

Save them for what, in particular? He didn't say.
