Comedy Central announced today that Eddie Murphy will receive the first-ever Comedy Icon Award at the network’s upcoming Comedy Awards, a new awards show dedicated to recognizing the best in onscreen humor, as well as stand-up. “Eddie Murphy’s impact in the world of comedy is immeasurable,” said MTV exec Casey Patterson in a statement. “From the characters he created on SNL, to his groundbreaking stand-up performances and unforgettable film roles, Murphy changed the game forever and we’re honored that he will be joining us for the first-ever Comedy Awards.” The show is set to tape in New York this Saturday, March 26 and will air Sunday, April 10 simultaneously on Viacom networks including Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land, VH1, and Nick at Night. Presenters and attendees will include funny men and women like Tina Fey, Tracy Morgan, Bill Hader, Stephen Colbert, Matt Stone, Trey Parker, Kristen Wiig, and Jon Stewart.

He might have deserved it back in the '80s, when he was actually funny, but Eddie Murphy is a case study for someone who sold out his street comedy roots for warm and fuzzy crap family movies.

I know he's grown up and has kids, but that doesn't mean you have to totally lose your edge.
