Because he was a black Jokester and thin obviously-lol
But he would respond by saying
"There are so few black men in comedy on TV that it just seems like I'm another J.J. But I really don't care what folks think because it pays the rent!!
Jet Magazine, May 20, 1976
I will say that the J. J character in the first season of Good Times reminded me of Freddie Washington but that's it

I like his thinking, who cares what people call you, as long as you get PAID! LOL

Exactly!!!! Besides, Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs wasn't typecast like Jimmie Walker was. LHJ went on to play the role of Joe Jackson in the 1992 miniseries The Jacksons: An American Dream (a role as far away from "Boom Boom Washington" as you can get), and he also played the recurring role of a principal on Gilmore Girls.
P.S. Speaking of which, wasn't the actress who played his girlfriend on WBK the same woman who played Will Smith's mother on Fresh Prince?

I'm surprised he didn't also get compared to Ernest Thomas from What's Happening. He was another skinny black guy on a sitcom in the 70's.

I know that Jimmie Walker and Ernest Thomas were compared to each other a lot while their respective shows were on the air.

J.J and Boom Boom were compared to each other because they were both skinny, black, and HIP
Raj was skinny, black, and nerdy

Roger was kind of nerdy though. Freddy Boom Boom Washington was not a nerd.

My grandmother once thought that Screech from Saved by the Bell and Horshack were the same guy.

Ironically - they faced off against each other in Celebrity Boxing.
