I'm not very partial to spinoffs. They never match the quality of the original show, they limp along for a season or two, then are forgotten and discarded.
But are there characters or situations that SHOULD have been granted a shot at the big time? If so, what were/are they?
Here's one I thought of (it is a rarity, for sure).
Gary Seven from the original Star Trek. It was obvious his episode was intended as a pilot of sorts. A human being raised and trained on an extraterrestrial world as a kind of intergalactic James Bond, to sort out trouble spots and solve problems. He's aided by a curious cat who has a strange habit of occasionally turning into a woman (Isis), and a goofy young secretary (Teri Garr!) in what could have become a neat love triangle.
It would have had a chance because Seven was not a character from the crew or the ensemble and therefore didn't NEED the ensemble to work and be interesting, like Joey from Friends or Flo from Alice. And it just had a neat, funky 60's vibe to it; breezy and fun without getting too serious.
