Penny played Laverne on "Laverne & Shirley." In case viewers ever forgot who was who, she always wore sweaters that were adorned with her initial - L.

Sometimes I watch 'Laverne and Shirley' and I wonder: 'What the 'L' is she wearing'???

I think it's important to remember that the idea was to make her character different from Shirley, and that extended to wardrobe obviously. Shirley tended to wear prim-and-proper, conservative, ladylike clothes. Laverne's looks tended to be more casual and sometimes a bit risque. But I thought that more often than not, Penny/Laverne looked just fine.

the only thing Laverne wore that I didn't really like was that ugly orange-and-brown striped sweater, she wore it in several episodes and even on some crossovers on Happy Days (and Mork & Mindy to I believe).

Other than that, I think she looked fine. These were low-income working girls, so they couldn't afford really high-style clothes!

I liked her trademark "L" on everything. Ironically, this almost didn't come to be. I remember either reading an interview or seeing one on TV once, where Penny said that they were originally going to do this with Shirley's character (an "S" on her outfits.) Cindy didn't go for this, so Penny said, "I'll take an 'L'!"
