“The Partridge Family”: “C’mon now and meet everybody/And hear us singing/There’s nothing better than being together/When we’re singing.” That’s just lazy songwriting.

I don't know if it's one of the WORST, but I never especially cared for it.

Heh, different strokes, I guess. That song always makes me feel, well, HAPPY! :)

I've always liked this theme song. The lyrics clearly explain what the show is about which is exactly what a theme song is supposed to do. And the tune is similar in musical style to the rest of the music on the show.

The "when we're singing" theme was only used for Season 1, unless I'm mistaken. I do like "C'mon get happy" from 2 and up, which is the song most remembered. Especially the part about "a whole lotta lovin'." Visions of Susan Dey...!

But I don't dislike the original theme either.

I agree, I always liked the tune myself.:)

I have always liked it to! :O) I agree it does explain the show very well! :O)

"When We're Singin'" was worse than "C'mon Get Happy"....

LOL! I like the music better than the lyrics though.

The hard part was that this was suppose to be children singing and clearly the background singers were adults. I thought this was suppose to be a take off on the Cowsills. Another thing was that the group was playing nightclubs and stuff where there looked to be older people attending. Did things like that disturb people here?

OH Nuts!

I liked the opening too. There are shows whose openings I liked more, but the Partridge Family 's was a nice one. And like Retro4Life said, it made me feel " happy".

(On the other hand, the opening to the Brady Bunch came across corny and a bit grating.)

Me too.

The family played in what appeared to be supper clubs. How was it Keith had all of these female fans and yet, they played to the older crowd?

I preferred the "Having a Ball" song they sang in episode 1. That would have made a better theme.

I like both theme songs!

But especially LOVE "Come on, Get Happy!"

I always liked the theme song, both of them! Even seeing PF in reruns, I sing along with it. Makes me "Happy"!

The S1 version of the theme song, "When We're Singin'", was more expositional than the later theme song in that it set up the situation ("...Danny got Reuben to sell our song, and it really came together when Mom sang along...") where the later theme song was more general, just about how they encouraged the listeners to get "happy". Also David Cassidy & Shirley Jones most likely sang on the later theme song, where the earlier theme, like "Together" from the pilot, was entirely sung by studio musicians.

This is addressed in another thread, unless you started it

I liked the way the theme song was at the beginning, "When we're Singing"

Me too. In a certain way, the show Jumped The Shark when they changed the theme song.
Did the theme song change the same time they changed "Chris"? (Maybe I will have to ask in a different post).

With The Brady Bunch, studio musicians sang the most original theme song (for the earliest episodes of the show) and I think the very sound was so fitting to the set-up of the show. It was sung by the "Peppermint Trolley Company" studio musicians. Their harmonizing voices were very much like a trained military chorus and there was just such a 1960s feel to it. But in the later episodes, the younger cast members of The Brady Bunch sang the theme song.

For the Partridge Family original theme song, the lead singer sounded like David Cassidy even though during those very early episodes David was not yet established as a singer. I wonder if the producers or directors already knew what David sounded like when they chose that person to sing the original theme song. It seems to me that when the producers decided on a new version of the theme song, David should have sung it but it should have remained "When We're Singing" not changed to "C'mon Get Happy." Shirley, and maybe the technically-enhanced voices of the rest of the actors could have been added as the chorus.

BTW Danny did do some "singing" a few years after PF became a hit. He was not successful even with kids his age or younger. His voice was probably very technologically-enhanced on the recording and he probably lip-synced on TV shows he appeared in. (See the link below).

I agree with most of the other posters. I've always liked both themes. Yes, you can clearly hear David Cassidy in the first season theme, When We're Singing.

I think the song was great. Very upbeat and fun, like the show.

I liked the season 2-4 version better but I don't know why.

I love the song "Together". It's my favorite song in the whole show and it really worked well as the theme in the pilot episode.

I always thought David sung the season 2 theme only (not the first one).

I am not completely sure, but mostly I think that he did only sing when the song changed. The original song was probably done by studio musicians totally.

If you are talking about the song in which they sing about traveling "On The Road" I was not aware it is called "Together." (But maybe you are talking about a different song).
However the song that was used to sell the pilot , the song about traveling on the road, is really such a 1960s sounding song and gives you such a sense of the mood of the times.

Was that song ever on any record?

It's catchy and memorable. I can think of a lot worse theme songs.

The full name is "Together (Havin' a Ball)". In the pilot it plays during the opening titles when they're onstage. The "When We're Singing" song and the familiar partridge opening sequence didn't start until episode 2.

"Together" was played several times in later seasons as well, as both vocal and instrumental versions. I don't know if David and the rest of the cast sang in those performances though.

I for one like the "When We're Singin'" Theme song because it tells the story of how they got started. It also differentiates the first season from the rest of the series. They also had different intermission music when they came back from commercial breaks and different closing music.

Come On Get Happy is better.
