View Full Version : A Look Back At The Original Charlie Sheen Aka Mackenzie Phillips

Probably the closest parallel to the Sheen situation, at least when thought of in terms of drug abuse. Phillips — who played oldest daughter Julie on the popular Indianapolis-based sitcom — developed a severe cocaine addiction, becoming such a terrible situation that she would often be late for work and couldn’t be shot for close-ups because of her frail appearance. During the fifth season, Phillips was told that if she didn’t quit, she’d be fired. Phillips, with little option, quit One Day at a Time. Two seasons later, Phillips was allowed back as a frequent guest star — at least until she collapsed on set during the ninth season and was fired for the second and last time.

Definitely a lot of parallels there. (On a separate note, that doll Julie has was also on Bewitched as one on the toys that Tabitha brought to life!!)

It's sad that Mack's family still hasn't talked to her since the release of her book. Chynna even backed out of being at the Oprah taping, so Val appeared in her place. I hope one day they can eventually patch things up.

Well, Chynna DID appear on the show a few days later (with Mac appearing via satellite from NYC). I thought Chynna was the only family member who WAS still speaking to Mac. Sad all around. :(

Mackenzie recently appeared on The Talk, and said that the Oprah appearance was the last time Chynna spoke to her. I was also under the impression that they were still speaking.

Well okay, yeah there's a parallel with the drug thing. But Mackenzie drifted back into obscurity after being fired -- she wasn't ranting and raving about "winning" and stuff like that.

And it was a slow process that led her to kick her drug habit around 1993 or so.

And even then, she slipped from being clean and sober a few years back.

Hopefully she's got her life together again.

As for Charlie, I think his problems go deeper than just drugs. His statements indicate he needs psychological help.

Mac also wasn't crucifying her co-workers and bosses from ODAAT like Charlie is now. To me, Mac always seemed to be sweet and kind, but deeply troubled. It also didn't help that her father introduced her to drugs when she was just a child. At least Charlie seemed to grow up in a loving family environment.

Seriously, Emilio Estevez seems to have turned out okay, or at the very least not a babbling lunatic.

So do their other siblings, who I believe are not in show biz.

Renee Estevez is in show business, but she obviously never became a household name. I'm not sure about any others.
