Jane Russell, one of Hollywood's leading sex symbols of the 1940s and 1950s films, has died, her family reports, according to the Associated Press. She was 89.

Russell died at her home in Santa Maria, along the central California coast, KSBY reported.

Russell, born Ernestine Jane Geraldine Russell in Bemidji, Minn., made her film debut in the 1943 Western The Outlaw. One of her most notable films is Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), which co-starred Marilyn Monroe.

Along with Betty Grable, she was one of the most popular pin-ups with G.I.s during World War II.

The last time I seen her was at one of the Collector Shows she looked fraile. I remember her doing the 18hr Bra commercials in the 70's.

She stopped signing autographs through the mail within the past year due to health issues, however, she was supposed to appear at the Hollywood Collector Show in Chicago later this month. An online friend of mine was going to travel to it just to meet her.

That is a shame your friend will not be able to travel to meet her :(

It's a shame that the passing of a Hollywood legend like Jane Russell's has been overshadowed by Charlie Sheen's antics, etc. Unfair!

So very true, Monika... it seems people today no longer care about the beautiful celebrities from the past such as Jane Russell who lived with respect, grace and dignity. They only want to hear about the vulgar, distasteful antics of so-called "celebrities" today, who wouldn't know grace, dignity and respect from an overflowing trash can...

Goodbye, Jane...

She was fantastic in "Son of Paleface," with Bob Hope and Roy Rogers. R.I.P.

There is also a little known sequel to "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" called "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" starring Miss Russell.
