The great James L. Brooks said his dream spinoff would be to spinoff Mary onto a totally new show & environment and keep the Mary Tyler Moore show cast as is. What do you think? Could Mary have worked on another show? Would The Mary Tyler Moore Show work WITHOUT Mary???

the character I would have loved to see spun off from TMTMS is Sue Ann Nivens! the already had a potential title for a spinoff featuring that character, "The Happy Homemaker"!

Actually that is something that always puzzled me about MTM enterprises. They already had a built in character with Sue Ann, but chose to give Betty White a whole new character instead. Odd indeed. lol

As much as I liked the Sue Ann character, I'm not sure she was really sympathetic enough to warrant her own show. I mean, let's face it, they were pushing it with Phyllis!

Betty White herself felt that the Phyllis character had been toned down for

her own spin off show,so when it only lasted 2 seasons and the MTM show wa

was coming to end, they did think of giving Sue Ann a spinoff.

Betty felt that a spinoff wouldn't work with a toned down Sue Ann ,so The

Betty White show came into being,a show Betty herself, wasn't fond of.

That's interesting stuff. I do have to disagree though that a Sue Ann spinoff couldn't have worked. I mean it already had a built in audience and with the right casting, could've worked. Phyllis on the other hand was doomed from the start with all the tragic deaths.
