View Full Version : Refresh My Memory

I vividly remember just one episode of "The Doris Day Show." If memory serves, Toby Martin (Todd Starke) was the younger and blonder of the two boys, Billy Martin (Philip Brown) the older and darker-haired. This particular episode involved young Toby trying to impress his mom by auditioning for the local boys' choir. Everyone expected him to excel as his mom was a great singer, but the kid bombed, and from there wove a tangled web. Unable to face disappointing his mom, he borrowed a choir robe from a taller friend. His mom's reaction was, "That's great, honey, that you made the choir, but that robe is way too long; let me hem it for you." Before he could protest, she ripped several inches off around the bottom, rendering the robe unsuitable for his friend! That moment of horror resulting from a little white lie has stayed with me these thirty years; sometimes when I see pictures of boy choristers in robes I still remember it. What I don't remember is how the episode came out. Does anyone? And does anyone know what happened to Philip Brown and Todd Starke?

To answer part of my own question from earlier: an interview posted on Doris Day's official site and several other sites says she heard that Todd Starke died in a motorcycle accident at age 21 and was very upset at the news. She still keeps in touch with Philip Brown, who is (or was as of Mother's Day 1996) still alive and remembers her as "the best mom." Todd Starke's Internet Movie Database entry does not list a birthdate, let alone a death date. I will update it if I can find the information, which so far I've been unable to find through any online search. Anyone possessing this information may want to submit it.

I'd still like to know how the episode came out!
