biting, remarks to the girls(Rose,Blanche and mother Sophia) and Stan, and when the late Bea Arthur was on "Empty Nest" as Dorothy in the episode callled "Dumped",Harry Weston(they happily made up at the end),My question is this:Did anyone -complete strangers-give Dorothy sarcastic ,biting remarks in the same manner she gave them?

but on two occasions, Rose gave her Dorothy-like sarcastic remarks.

1. When Dorothy asked her if her ceiling was leaking, too- Rose responded, "No, Dorothy. I was just milking the cow I keep in my closet. Boy, with only three hours sleep, I can be as bitchy as you!"

2. Another time Rose said her sister Holly was a flautist, and Dorothy goes, "She plays th flute.' Rose responds, "No, Dorothy, she plays the flaut. It looks like a tuba except there's hair on the bottom. OF COURSE she plays the flute!"

Some strangers have insulted Dorothy, though- like that guy at the bus terminal, who, after Dorothy said she always wanted to try a nudist camp: "Some big pots belong on the back burner..." (not Dorothy-like saracasm, just an insult) and then Dorothy said, "Don't you have a cousin you should be dating?" :D

Blanche made a few biting remarks once or twice. One time Dorothy gave her some dating and advice and Blance replied, "Imagine that, you giving me dating advice. Who says wisdom comes from experience?" I don't think that is really sarcasm though.

The more I watch this show, the more I get annoyed with Dorothy. Funny yes, humble no. I just think she's got major chips on her shoulder like getting knocked up at a young age, etc. She takes it out on everyone by throwing stones and cheap shots like she's miss perfect.

Blanche may be a bimbo, but was married to one guy and stayed with him for the duration. She also has a beautiful house. Rose may have always been a ditz, but also kept up a steady successful marriage. Dot on the other hand has a history of dumb decisions. And in the show, she never has success with men........because she's a b$tch!

Blanche hurled her share of insults Dorothy's way many a time through the years. But not really in the sarcasm sense. Dorothy was the master in that department, whenever Blanche or Rose asked something obvious.

Notice, though, that the writers made her a lot less sarcastic then she was in the first four seasons- that may have had to do with the new crop of writers who came on. There was one instance in season 5, though, when Rose asked her if she was upset because of Michael, and she replied something along the lines of, No, I'm upset because I can't make any sense out of those commercials for Obsession." Other than that, not many of those type replies from season 5-7.

The changes in Bea and Estelle's characters were not good at all.

dorothy got her share of insults thrown at her by complete strangers.

like when sophia was going to marry max winestock. dorothy was against it. on the day of the wedding, sophia locked herself in the bathroom, upset because she didn't have her daughter's blessing. the wedding planner (obviously gay) walks in and says to get moving. after a few words were exchanged among the group, the wedding planner said, "she doens't approve? now look here, stretch. you're going to overlook whatever it is and move on. my mother did with my marriage...and if you say something smart, i'll slap you silly."
lol.
dorothy (and sophia) were the queens of sarcastic come backs, tho. you didn't know what was going to come out of their mouths.

And,...did she give complete strangers after they insulted her the same steely-"evil eye"glance she gave Rose,Sophia and Blanche?

And,when Dorothy especially, gave sarcastic remarks to complete strangers, did she ever get in really BIG trouble?

she ever really got in trouble- people usually took a step back, unless they were of a similar nature.

I agree that the 5th season shows paled next to the four before it- it had a handful of strong shows, but otherwise, lacking. The first four seasons was the peak (for writing and characters), creatively, especially the first three.

Another gay wedding planner at the rehearsal for Dorothy and Stan's re-marrage told Dorothy she needs to take smaller steps, we're not Godzilla marching upon the city!! (or something like that)

Sophia had just as many insulting wise-cracks towards Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, Stan, and just about anybody who walked through the front door.
