I don't think there was any idea of having Bob or Mary visit each other's series...even with a programmer like Fred Silverman in charge of CBS' schedule at the time, and he was the king of "cross-overs", including Mary's later appearances on "RHODA" and "PHYLLIS".

It would have been too gimmick-y for them to share a storyline, but......

....it might have been fun for them to have a brief chance encounter at an airport or a concert or something.....with each show (on the same night) showing the incident in the context of its own storyline.....and with Bob Hartley and Mary Richards remaining strangers.

I think a crossover between the two shows would have worked, as long as it was like a cameo of Bob being Mary's therapist or something. I don't see anything long like a two-parter happening, but the mood and sensibilities of the two shows would have matched up well, I think.

Sounds like fodder for a fan-fiction, to me. :-) Somebody with a good knowledge of both shows, and a good writer, should do it. (Not me - I'm not THAT comfortable with MTMS to do that.)

They could've made a joke about Bob's sister Ellen being an exact ringer for Mary's annoying friends Twinks and Sparky. :lol: Howard Arnell was a spitting image of Carol's annoying fiance Don (the guy with bad feet). Mr. Carlin used to go to high school with Mary under the name of Eldon Colfax. ;) Of course, those roles were played by the same actors: Pat Finley, Richard Schaal and Jack Riley.

Jack Reilly also played Barry Barlow, who was interested in renting Rhoda's apartment when she was going to move back to New York the first time.

Nothing is wrong with TV.com but he was posting things like it was something he knew about from experience or being around at the time. Now I believe he is just copying and pasting information trying to appear that he knows a lot about TV shows. He got exposed when he said.....tv.com

That's not cool Sol, a lot of us weren't around when some of these shows aired or were too young to remember them. That doesn't mean he or anybody else can't have a vast knowledge about certain shows.

I do remember a promo CBS had for Saturday Night with Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart and Suzanne Pleshette all lined up. I think Mary and Bob were saying something like "were together", and Suzanne tapped Bob on the shoulder and said, uh, Bob, you're with me.

...at the time Bob was asked to appear on "THE MARY TYLER MOORE SHOW", he was out of town. The only way he could get back to L.A. in time to film that episode was to fly...and he wouldn't do that. When his own series began, he usually stayed in Hollywood during its production schedule.

As for tv.com, that's a website that's constantly updated as far as information is concerned. Personally, I don't depend on it that much because not all of the information listed is complete, or accurate (but if I wanted to look up somthing on, say, "THE KRAFT MUSIC HALL" or 'HULLABALLOO", yes, it's there!). They also had the "Bob is afraid to fly" story about his near-appearance on Mary's show because someone obviously posted that from an outside source. In fact, I've contributed valuable information to tv.com from what I'VE gathered from different sources, including personal viewings of episodes and their credits...and you'd be surprised how much of that kind of info is absent!

Hey, I once thought Rick Mitz's "Great TV Sitcom Book" was a good source of information when it was first published in 1978 [no other book like that had been written before]. However, I noticed that he was "cribbing" -and in some cases, directly swiping, verbatim!- information from Tim Brooks & Earle Marsh's and Vincent Terrace's reference books {why? because I read them regularly}...and their publishers noticed it as well, because most of Mitz's entries were deleted from the fourth edition [and it became a very skinny volume, save for the photos he used to illustrate the various shows]. And, to give you an example, in his description of "I LOVE LUCY", he miscalculated the number of episodes that were actually filmed: there were 180 {179, if you don't count the "1956 Christmas Show" episode that was never syndicated}. Mitz, however, claimed it was "178" out of "179".
