View Full Version : Do you Think 'The Mary Tyler Moore Show' Was More Geared Towards Female Audiences?
Brian Damage 02-23-2011, 11:08 AM Let me just preface this by saying I love this show and I am a male. However, do you think the show overall was more geared for women to enjoy more? Especially during the early 70's, with the kickstart of women's lib and all? What do you guys (and gals) think?

Yooch 02-23-2011, 11:48 AM Same here. A very popular show in the country overall. But, yes, I think it did appeal to women more.
LUNCH 02-23-2011, 12:55 PM I'm a guy who's always loved The Mary Tyler Moore Show.--I don't know if the show was originally more geared towards women or not. It's possible.--However,in my opinion, alot(not all)good tv shows have always appealed to both guys and gals and also most age groups too.
Dianne3 02-23-2011, 03:41 PM I first came across MTM in the original run and couldn't get into it. I was a kid then and was more interested in the Brady Bunch reruns. I now know it was the later years of the MTM show that I came across.
As an adult I enjoy MTM.
Kristen 02-23-2011, 03:47 PM I would say yes. The show's star was a woman, and given the premise of a woman "making it after all" is definitely something that's going to appeal to women. Not that the show doesn't have male fans, but I would think the fanbase is predominently female.
Miss Lisa 02-23-2011, 06:14 PM I don't know. My daddy is the one who showed this show to me because he liked it so much. I can see where it could appeal to women more though. Just a random fact, I was almost named Rhoda. LOL, we already had enough Mary's in the family.
I think so, I used to watch it with my mom but my dad & brother would never watch it with us.
Marvo301 02-23-2011, 07:36 PM I think with a female star playing a strong female character making a place for herself in a man's world of course this show is going to appeal to women. But of course there were strong male characters for us guys to relate to as well. There was Lou aka the boss. There was Ted who as anchorman was the "star" of the WJM news. And head newswriter Murray who was the real brains of the newsroom. Like any good TV show TMTMS appealed to audience members of both sexes and/or genders.
OH Nuts! 02-23-2011, 08:39 PM Naah - it was a wonderful and well done show all the way around. I think it appealed to EVERYBODY. (Just my opinion of course.) When it first aired, everyone of all ages I knew seemed to love it. I looked forward to seeing it every Sat night when it orig. aired. (Boy how this dates me!)
Brian Damage 02-23-2011, 09:54 PM Interesting takes by all of you, I would be curious to see the demo break down for this show. Personally, I think it is great, but I myself think it was a groundbreaking sitcom for a female audience...at least originally. IMO

I did too. I was 5 when the show came on and I watched it every Saturday night. It was one of my favorite shows of the 70's although I confess, Ted was my favorite character. lol

Exactly. Even today, Mary and Rhoda are influencing young women, like some of us on this very board!! :D

Does that mean you?? LOL, I have to admit, I did toss my hat in the air a few times, but that was only because it looked like fun.... and I like throwing things.
catlover79 02-24-2011, 02:19 PM Yes, even me. I haven't tossed my hat up in the middle of a busy crowd, but I aspire to reach the independence and contentment that Mary Richards achieved as a single working woman.
Dianne3 02-24-2011, 04:00 PM What I also should mention, but forgot, that although I didn't really watch MTM growing up, I did watch Rhoda. I very vaguely remember Phyllis. I was shocked to see Good Times kill of James.
Yet, it was many years later that I learned that the above 3 all started off on MTM.
Retro4Life 02-24-2011, 08:36 PM It was geared toward women but as Marv said, it had appeal to men through the characters. Definitely a show the whole family could watch together and relate to, and one that didn't talk down to the viewers' intelligence.
Btw, Brian that's a great picture!
