View Full Version : Parade Magazine Lists Their Top 10 Rock Bands Of ALL TIME: Do You Agree With It?
Brian Damage 02-21-2011, 07:34 PM Motley Crue, The Cars and Green Day have made it onto a new magazine list of the Top 10 Best Rock Bands ever.
The three acts join the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Queen and Santana on the Parade magazine poll.
The Beatles topped the list, and along with Led Zeppelin are the only two that are no longer performing and recording together. The Cars recently reformed and are currently in the studio working on new material.
Green Day is releasing a brand-new live album, entitled "Awesome As F***," on March 22 on Reprise Records. It will include explosive performances captured during the band’s 2009-2010 world tour in support of their Grammy Award-winning album "21st Century Breakdown."
Last week Motley Crue star Vince Neil surrendered to authorities in Nevada, where he'll serve 15 days behind bars on a DUI charge.
Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones recently admitted he has over 3,000 guitars but only plays about 15 of them on stage.
The top 10 list is:
1. The Beatles
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Queen
4. The Cars
5. Heart
6. Green Day
7. Journey
8. Santana
9. Rolling Stones
10. Motley Crue

Zoneboy 02-21-2011, 08:21 PM Another joke of a list, the only ones I agree with are:
The Beatles
Queen
The Rolling Stones (Ranked too Low)
All the others I like but don't consider them top 10 material
ABlairican Pie 02-22-2011, 02:54 AM This list is completely bizarre: Of course The Beatles and Led Zeppelin would make the list, but Journey?? I'm not sure by what criteria they would go by for considering the Top 10 bands of all time. Is it popularity? Record sales? Cultural or musical influence and impact?
If I were to determine a list like this, it would go something like this:
1. The Beatles: They were considered the band that "saved" rock and roll after several years of not having any big names since the late 50's, but by the mid-60's, they went from being bubblegum to visionary musicians whose musical output covered the gamut of everything--they turned rock and roll from fun poppy songs to making it a serious art form which addressed socially conscious themes. It was their mutual admiration for Bob Dylan, whose politically charged lyrics impacted them, to make this radical change, which in fact also compelled Dylan to change from folk to a more rock sound.
tv star collector 02-22-2011, 10:26 AM The Beatles being ranked at Number One is a no-brainer. But, although I'm
not a Rolling Stones fan, I'm surprised they didn't place Number Two, if only
due to their longevity.
dakert 02-22-2011, 12:55 PM Rolling Stone magazine Never did like KISS
MickeyMac 02-22-2011, 08:28 PM I am at the point where I dont pay attention to these lists anymore. Its always the same bands.
Retro4Life 02-22-2011, 08:33 PM Pitiful. Motley Crue on the same top ten list as the Beatles? Seriously. And Queen was a good band, but Number 3?
Next!
ABlairican Pie 02-23-2011, 02:28 AM 2. Black Sabbath. Perhaps even more influential than The Beatles, Black Sabbath were the band that invented heavy metal in the early 70's. They made songs of dark social commentary of the world at the end of the 60's decrying the Vietnam War, pollution, poverty and a general apocalyptic sense of dread. They were also not only the first band to use occultic and otherworldly images extensively, but also talked openly of religion and mystical themes. It was Tony Iommi's detuned guitar sound, as well as pummelling volume, that inspired countless generations of guitar fans to play a little louder and heavier than anyone else. Interestingly, they made moralistic songs which appeared an anomaly in a decade of indugence.
ABlairican Pie 02-23-2011, 11:15 AM 3. Led Zeppelin. Often credited with being the inventors of heavy metal a year before Black Sabbath's groundbreaking debut in 1970, Led Zeppelin were
more known with creating heaviness with Jimmy Page's droning guitar, Robert Plant's soaring vocals, and John Bonham's thunderous drums on their first album. While their heaviness was an extension of the British electric blues scene early in the band's career, they soon created a heavy sound that owed more to the band's use of atmosphere and space in recording--Bonham's drums were recorded in rooms where mics were placed strategically
away from the kit to give the impression of depth. Page was also adept at creating a hugeness with his guitar, and was accomplished at very many styles, including folk, Delta-style blues, Celtic and even classical flourishes, such as on "Kashmir". They could do no wrong, as Page commented, "Our mediocre was better than anyone's best." For this they commanded a huge following throughout the 70's to even this day.
Yooch 02-23-2011, 11:45 AM Glad to see the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Journey on the list.
Dr. Jazz 02-24-2011, 03:52 AM Where was The Who and Pink Floyd? And what would The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac count as? Rock, soft rock, pop rock? lol
MrCleveland 02-25-2011, 01:48 PM Where was The Who and Pink Floyd? And what would The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac count as? Rock, soft rock, pop rock? lol
I, too was wondering about The Who. And The Jimi Hendrix Experience IS a band with Hendrix, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell... unbelievable!ohno:
Zebra 3 02-25-2011, 09:27 PM 3. Led Zeppelin. Often credited with being the inventors of heavy metal a year before Black Sabbath's groundbreaking debut in 1970, Led Zeppelin were

You forgot to add Jimmy Page is a thieving bastard.

Whom did he ripoff?
dakert 02-25-2011, 11:49 PM Where are The Monkees??
Zebra 3 02-28-2011, 01:43 PM Whom did he ripoff?
Too many...the pig (Jimmy Page) should spend time in the Jailhouse Rock.

I must've missed this somewhere down the line. Care to give a few examples and if true, Page isn't the only one.

I'm a HUGE Led Zeppelin fan. With the exception of The Beatles, I think that they are the greatest rock band ever. However, they did rip-off a number of blues players. "Whole Lotta Love", for example, was stolen from a bluesman.
Nighthawk76 02-28-2011, 11:34 PM This is a goofy list. The only three bands who belong on it are The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Stones!
-STEFFY- 03-01-2011, 12:14 AM If I was in charge of this outrageous list, it would be:
1. Rolling Stones
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Pink Floyd
4. The Who
5. Creedence Clearwater Revival
6. Queen
7. Jimi Hendrix/Jimi Hendrix Experience
8. Van Halen
9. Aerosmith
10. Allman Brothers Band
I don't like the beatles at all.

The lyrics were ripped off from Willie Dixon's You Need Love.

Queen belongs on it also, the rest don't.
tiredmike59 03-01-2011, 01:12 PM you know its bogus if they left out lynyrd skynyrd
TheCars1986 03-01-2011, 01:19 PM FINALLY some recognition for The Cars! The most underrated band in the history of rock and roll, by far. Their first six albums went platinum (some multi-platinum), yet the only album included on the 500 greatest of all time was their debut and that didn't even crack the top 250. Glad to see them in a top ten list of anything finally.

Show me a list like this that isn't bogus. These lists compiled by so-called experts will always include those that don't belong on it and omit those that do. I'm sure most of us don't take these lists seriously but they are good for a laugh or 2.

I love The Cars but have never considered them to be underrated. Their debut Lp was great but Candy-O is my favorite followed by Panorama which to me is their most underrated release. My choice for most underrated band would be The Alan Parsons Project.

The Cars not being in the RnR Hall of Fame, yet having less successful (not to mention less talented) bands like Blondie, Talking Heads, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, Tom Waits, etc. in the H.O.F. is enough to make them underrated. Ric Ocasek is definitely in the top five greatest pop songwriters of all time. And yes, Panorama is criminally underrated.

Blondie and The Talking Heads are just as talented as The Cars and have been just as successful. Not being in the hall doesn't make them underrated. You could say the same for Kiss and Rush and they're not underrated although Kiss may be overrated according to some folks. I will agree with you though on Grandmaster Flash and Tom Waits. Ocasek is indeed a great songwriter but you'll have a hard time finding many people who think he belongs in the top 5.

Blondie and The Talking Heads were nowhere near as successful as The Cars during the 80's. The Cars sold more albums, and had more top forty hits. They also had critical acclaim as well. Any band that blatantly deserves to be in the HOF (Kiss and Rush are also good examples) are by default underrated, or else they'd be in. Not to mention that on just about every Top 100 list you could find out there The Cars are excluded. Hell, they weren't even featured on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 80's.

Success can be defined in more than one way, The Cars did indeed have more top 40 singles but Blondie hit #1 more often. All hit the top 40 several times and all had #1 or top 10 Lp's on the billboard charts. I know Blondie hit # 1 maybe 3 times on the singles charts but at the moment I'm not sure about The Cars. I do know that their first top 10 single was Shake it Up which I believe went to # 4. I'm quite sure that The Talking Heads never had a #1 single but their Lp's were usually at or near the top of the charts. I have to admit that I didn't see VH1's greatest hits of the 80's and I'm very surprised that You Might Think wasn't on the list. That was one the best videos of the 80's and someone at VH1 had a screw loose somewhere for not including it. We can both agree that The Cars definitely belong in the hall and I think we can also agree that some who are already in have no business there.
TheCars1986 03-03-2011, 10:03 AM As to the rest of that list Led Zeppelin, Green Day, Heart, Santana, Journey, and Motley Crue do NOT belong on a top 10 list of anything IMO. Led Zeppelin perhaps in the top fifty, although personally I find them to be extremely overrated by classic rock standards. The rest of those did enjoy success, but I wouldn't even consider Journey (unless you count pre-Steve Perry), Heart, or Santana as "rock bands". And Green Day and Motley Crue just plain suck.
MariposaLKB 03-13-2011, 11:57 AM Heart, yes--significant as the first rock band fronted by two women. I only did a little research just now (since I have only been a fan of Heart and not the Runaways I knew I had to at least check Wikipedia LOL), but I think Heart was hitting the public consciousness at about the same time the Runaways were just getting together (1975). So I think Heart could be said to be first--they actually began playing in 1967.
I would put Boston in the top 10 also, instead of Green Day and/or Motley Crue! (And maybe the Cars.) They were not acoustic (Green Day), but used no synthesizers in the age of their gross overuse (Cars). They only put out 4 albums as a result of complete perfectionism, but those albums were positively symphonic (guitars like violins!) and hard-edged at the same time. And everybody put out ballads back then--no shame in putting out some of the best LOL! Plus, no gimmicks like girly looks while being completely misogynistic (Motley Crue).
The rest of the list I can agree with. Steve Perry is still my idol LOL! And the early deaths of John Bonham and Freddie Mercury were some of the greatest tragedies in rock and roll. But yeah... what about Pink Floyd??? The Who? Jimi Hendrix? If this list was based on either significant contributions or musicianship or both, they should be on it!
MickeyMac 03-13-2011, 01:10 PM You all should make your own lists of top ten bands. It could be fun.

1. The Cars (I'm biased. They're my favorite of all time)
2. The Rolling Stones
3. John Mellancamp
4. Billy Joel
5. Elton John
6. Prince
7. Creedence Clearwater Revival
8. The Police
9. Eddie Money
10. Weezer
