I always wondered why cartoon characters only have 4 fingers on each hand?

I've read that it is much more time consuming and harder to get to look right when trying to do five fingers. but there could be more to it. Plus four is an even number so do the still have a middle finger:)

I do think it's odd that four-fingered characters can STILL give the Finger to many!

...since the beginning of comic strips and animated cartoons, is this:

"It's easier to draw characters with four fingers, rather than five."
