Is it true that Daivd Merrifield's murder was solved?
I know on a previous thread that one of the board members saw an update saying that a suspect in David's murder had recently commited suicide and that police were closing the case.
I cannot find anything about the update or any articles.
Does anyone have any other info?

If I recall correctly at the end of the segment that aired on the revamped UM Dennis Farina said police think they knew who killed him but the man was now dead. He never mentioned a name. Merrifield's niece posted on here a few years ago but seemed unwilling to discuss the case or give more info as to who this mystery killer was.

It's weird that the UM website still lists Merrifield's case as unsolved and there is no mention that authorities believe his killer to be dead. I wish they would update their website more often.

I know! They still say that Arthur Lopez Jr. and Mahfuz Huq are wanted (I know they were recent arrests, but you'd think somebody would want to leave some update) and there are a lot of other problems with the new webiste.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that people theorized the person that gunned him down was possibly a family member, hence the explanation for the early meeting and explanation for the silence regarding their identity.

This link should take you directly to a short post made here by the admin which explains that particular rule:

I wonder about the family member theory. Wouldn't Merrifield have recognized him in their meeting or during the phone calls? If it was a contract job (and that's possible given the execution-style killing) - why? Hitmen, to my knowledge, don't often commit suicide, let alone become suspects. What's the motive here? The segment didn't really suggest Merrifield was exceptionally well-off, nor disliked or with enemies. What an unfortunate, and fascinating, story.

I believe one of Merrifield's relatives posted here on another thread and when people asked about who was responsible, she (I believe it was his niece) didn't want to discuss it any further than the family knew who was responsible and wanted it left at that.

I'm still curious as to not only who killed him, but for what reason? Was it related to his business or something completely different? There's been a few cases where the suspect has died before they find out who actually committed the crime, like Tracy Wofford-Bunn and Mike Emert, but this case still has something elusive about it.

I am curious too about what happened, and when someone asked the relative for more information she basically said "leave it alone, it's been solved and we know who was responsible".
