Local Woman Sends Sweet Treats To Troops
Valentine's Day Shipment In Mail
Posted: February 11, 2011 Updated: 9:40 pm CST February 11, 2011
Houston -- A Montgomery County woman who earned a prestigious Jefferson Award is continuing her important work this Valentine's Day. Marlene Summers is the mastermind behind "Grammy's Cookie Convoy," but it's thanks to dedicated volunteers and donors that she's been able to supply a taste of home to tens of thousands of military service members serving overseas.
The Saturday before the Super Bowl she rounded up her own troops for a workday hoping to prepare 5,000 "Valentine Hugs" for shipment. Summers calls her chocolate chip cookies "hugs." Volunteers of all ages gathered to help with forms, labels, cards, boxes and loading. "We had over 150 volunteers show up. It was awesome!" said Summers.
The cookies were then shipped off early Monday morning, exactly one week before Valentine's Day. Summers says television coverage of her work helped them collect the donations needed for this latest shipment. "I hope to let everyone who was so generous after the segment aired know that their donations are what allowed this next shipment to become a reality," wrote Summers.
Summers told KPRC Local 2 when she first won her Jefferson Award that the inspiration for her project started when she met a soldier on a golf course several years ago. "After meeting him, I went home and I prayed that night … all the memories of how horrible I felt about our veterans from Vietnam …I thought there ought to be something I can do," Summers said in March of 2010. "All of a sudden, boom! God just said, 'Well, gee, you own a chocolate chip cookie company, Marlene.'"
Summers says it took four hours at the post office to process all the boxes for this most recent shipment. Her team was helped by a postal worker named Preston who worked nonstop to get the boxes in the mail. Summers called him "one of our esteemed veterans and one of our special heroes."
