I just watched the first half of the 48 Hours Mystery coverage of the Michael Stover case and found it one of the most interesting cases I have seen profiled there. Did anyone else see this? I believe Dateline also did a story on it a month or so back.
I still haven't seen part 2 (it airs next week), but I already know exactly what happened. It's obvious that this Updycke tramp put out a hit on Stover and used that little 5'6 soldier-of-fortune wannabe guy (Oakes) as a pawn in her game. Her father was also likely involved (a millionaire wine tycoon). It's pretty sad how this diminutive idiot Oakes takes the fall for these people who don't give a rat's ass whether or not he rots in jail. I can only hope that he decides to talk after spending a few years in prison and realizing that Linda Updyke was using him from day one.
This is one of the more infuriating cases since the real culprits got off Scot free. Updycke concocted that whole "stalker" story as a way to plant a seed in the minds of the police: if something ever happened to Stover, it would be self-defense. First she tried to get Stover arrested by planting some marijuana and cocaine on his car and then calling the police to report it. When that didn't work, she had the little man Oakes play Rambo and ambush him at his own home.
I really hope the detectives stay on this case and try to find enough evidence to bring Linda Updyke (and perhaps her father) to trial.
