Donny Hathaway suffered from crippling schizophrenia, which culminated in his suicide at the age of 33. Committed suicide by jumping from the 15th floor of New York's Essex House hotel on January 13, 1979.

Yes, I knew. Donny Hathaway is actually my all-time favorite male vocalist (followed closely by Steve Perry). "For All We Know", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Giving Up", "The Ghetto", his duets with Roberta Flack...all wonderful, wonderful songs and Donny gave them his all. His "Unsung" special should still be up on YouTube. Definitely worth a look!!

I hadn't realized that Donny Hathaway sang the Maude theme song. It's sad that his mental illness got the better of him and led to his untimely death. He had an amazing voice and it's tragic that it was silenced way too soon. :(

Donny Hathaway's Unsung (TVOne's answer to Biography) is still up on YouTube - I just checked!! Donny's story is very compelling - it's just so sad that mental illness eventually overtook him. :(
